Titans

It's been a long time since watching but I thought the last episodes were hinting at what Heather's motivation might be. Of course I may be giving way too much credit.

Watching episode 13 now. I think it's fairly obvious that she was supposedly molested and I guess that was meant to justify why exactly she was such a bitch.

Episode 13 just... ends. There's no great cliffhangers but there's also no real resolution either. IIRC NBC did order additional scripts, so I guess they were still hoping that NBC would pick those up when they produced these.

I didn't dislike the show, in fact I enjoyed the binge watch, I just think there could have been a lot tighter storylines they'd gone with in the end.
I think the issue is that it's very lazily written - ok, Heather is a bitch and schemer just because they want her to be. Gwen hates Heather because Heather is a bitchy schemer. Jenny's storyline is very much repetitious, though I did like her becoming bitchier after almost drowning.

Also, they do a u-turn with Samantha's character and her suddenly being rich. It seemed like they originally very much meant for her to come from a poorer family who worked her way up and then in the last episode they introduce her grandfather (Ricardo Montalban) and she was clearly from a wealthy family of her own.

About halfway through now. I could do with more Ethan and less Jenny and Laurie if we're going for a secondary story. It's funny though because they set up Ethan's introduction as if he was going to be a huge troublemaker but so far he's been a teenage boy and that's pretty much it.

Re: Ethan, it's like they decided they needed a teenage character to appeal to a wider audience. I actually liked him as a support system for Jenny and I wish they had done more with that. With that said, once again they have an outsider joining the family and he just kind of quickly adapts to being a Williams. The way he was introduced you'd think it would be like Ryan on The O.C. and the focus of his storylines would be him adapting, but as you said he just kind of is a normal teenage boy.

Yes, as I've said before, while some of the endings may not have been great, Spelling usually tried to have some sort of closure at the end of his shorter lived soaps (see Malibu Shores, Pacific Palisades, 2000 Malibu Road & Models Inc) in order to help with hawking them overseas as limited run series after they'd crashed and burned in the US. I didn't know that they'd ordered extra scripts for Titans. I'm guessing they may have been banking on those or maybe Spelling wasn't arsed with wrapping it up as the glossy miniseries genre wasn't really in vogue any longer by the early 00's.

I think that was why there was a last-ditch attempt to move it to Mondays - usually the first 13 episodes are produced by mid-December, so I imagine they had to decide if they were going to go back in January to film those additional scripts. But yes, Spelling did learn in the 90s that his shows were big sellers in Europe, so that's why he tried to provide closure for most of his shows; even Savannah tied up most of their storylines at the end of season 2. I also guess that's why Titans didn't really sell that well in Europe compared to his other shows.

Character motivations are so nonsensical you can watch the episodes in any given order. Nothing could ever save this train wreck.
People are always trashing Models Inc but you don't know what "bad soap" looks like until you've watched Titans.
Savannah was popular because it was good and Central Park West was good for its era. Closure never seems to be an issue, although I can only speak from my own experience.

Titans was the one that I never did get to see all the way through. I don't think we had Sky at the time.

Well, I've caved and watched the pilot. Now watching episode one which seems an altered version of the pilot, with some recasts? Is there a reason they recast the Sam role? I think Priscilla Garita was a much better actress and her scenes with Casper Van Dien are better than the recast.
I didn't think the pilot was terrible and I certainly would have been interested and watched weekly if I could have. I think I would have enjoyed it the same way I did Savannah. I don't fully understand why it's called Titans? What are they Titans of? Why are they Titans? The family doesn't seem particularly powerful or anything? Sure they are rich, but they don't seem like the Carringtons or the Ewings even. Living in their McMansions across the street from each other. It seems less special.

These '90s and '00s shows had some unbelievably hot men in them. I want to be pregnant by Casper's jawline. Wasn't John Barrowman called Peter on CPW too?
Anyways, I am going to watch the rest of this this week before it vanishes. Back at work the next three days so probably do an episode or two a night after todays little binge.

I don't think there was any particular reasoning other than Lourdes being their first choice, but she was attached to another pilot when it was originally shot and then became available. To be fair to her, her scenes were re-shot on a sound stage while the original pilot was filmed on location, so I think her scenes overall felt that Spelling-quality shoddier.

The sisters are so boring. Terrible casting, neither of them has that special quality where you want to see more of them. I can't believe we got both of them in a Spelling show. I could have done with one sister and one that was a bit more charismatic. I like the brothers relationship. Peter has shades of Adam Carrington which works. Chandler could do and say anything and I would watch because he looks like that. Not impressed with the casting of the sisters and Samantha.

Victoria Principle is great though, very watchable and it's nice seeing her in another soap. I am only on episode 3, so I expect it to go horribly wrong soon enough though.

I strongly disagree there. Priscilla Garita is terribly smooth, she is in the same league that the Williams sisters. Lourdes Benedicto has much more temper. I can see why Spelling really wanted her.

As for Casper Van Dien, he looks damn good but his acting is really poor.

I am used to Priscilla from other things and just find her more exciting to watch. I do think she's a pretty good actress, and liked her chemistry better with Van Dien and Principal. Lourdes as Samantha bores me to death in the same way the sisters do. Van Dien isn't the greatest actor, especially not when given a lot to do. In the business stuff when he has scenes where he's up against John Barrowman his weaknesses as an actor really show. He's good in the romantic, love scene stuff and if that's the way it has to go, then I am fine with that. He should be shirtless or in a state in semi-undress in all his scenes, unless he's in his white naval uniform.

Yasmine Bleeth isn't that bad. She's not terrible, at least not as terrible as I had expected all things considered. I am guessing that the main problem, from what I can see is inconsistent writing.

I think the only in show reference to the title was a scene where one of their airplanes was called Titan. I'm guessing Spelling liked the name after using it on Dynasty as the episode title for the Colby clan intro episodes. As you said, they weren't exactly world class power brokers, so it's an odd fit for what the show was.

This was one of the criticisms I remember reading at the time. That everything from the Williams name to the intro music felt pedestrian compared to grandiose trappings of it's 80's predecessors.

He often looked a bit overwhelmed by it all but, well, he's still Casper. I don't think he suffered the most from the writing whereas Peter as the *cough-cough* main villain was downright unwatchable.
I liked John Barrowman in CPW but here he plays it like a little bitch. Peter did "stuff" but I had no idea what he was trying to achieve.

Surely Victoria Principal was the main attraction because we never expected her to do a soap again.
I don't remember everything but wasn't her role a bit diminished along the way?

I think the 90s soaps tried hard to stay away from what was seen, by then, as the excesses of the genre in the 80s; even those that aimed for a more upscale, glamorous setting did it in a more mundane manner.

Admittedly I haven't seen TITANS since it first aired, but I have no memory of it going memorably bad; I think it just sputtered out. Or at least, I got bored and stopped watching, but I'm pretty prone to that.

As other people have said, the writing for her just doesn't make sense. Is she a gold-digger? If so, why did she do the whole wedding reveal and why is she pretty much trying to bang Chandler right away? Ultimately, there's no suspense in the writing for her and we don't root for her, or even against her. She's just kind of written all over the place as a character, when she's supposedly "the outsider" who's meant to be or glance into this world. I don't think we even got a proper explanation about she and Richard met.

In the later episodes his storyline gets a bit more focused, but I think the issue stems down to how Chuck Pratt Jr writes his shows - he likely didn't do a story bible or even plan out the season properly where he knew that he wanted to get from point a to point b to point c. This is of course a terrible way to write any soap - I'm not even saying that you necessarily have to have some grand plan and outline, just a fair amount of knowledge who your characters are, what their motivations are and where you want them to end up at the end of the season.

Yes, it's very noticeable at the dinner party when one of the daughters shows up wearing a halter crop top and trousers. If this was Dynasty or The Colbys all the ladies would be in gowns for a dinner party, even if it was at their own house.
