Underrated Scene In The Later Seasons.

Jock-O-Lantern

S12 E1

It was a scene right after JR got shot by Sue Ellen between Bobby, Sue Ellen and Lucy. And as usual, Bobby gets on his high horse about JR and he and Sue Ellen, I believe for the first and only time, get into a real argument. But the best part of the scene occurs when Lucy enters the room. Lucy makes a snide remark about Sue Ellen being a bad shot and that sets off Bobby with his "JR's family" routine. And the best moment of the scene was when Lucy says "why don't you ask my daddy what kind of family he is."

I particularly liked that scene because Lucy had every right to tell Bobby what he can do with "he's family" BS after what JR did to her family for no good reason. And I was happy to see someone finally not let JR off the hook for previous bad deeds.

I absolutely LOVE that scene. Lucy is so smug when she says, "I'm on Sue Ellen's side."

I never understood the level of JR's rather intense dislike of Gary, other than Miss Ellie's favoring him.
Both parents favored Bobby, but JR didn't have the same feeling about that
JR hated Gary because Gary was weak in JR's eyes. Gary was soft and tender hearted and emotional. That made him less of a man to JR.
J.R. hated Gary because he feared Gary's potential. And in J.R.'s eyes, a potential threat is an actual threat "Do unto others before they do unto you".

Gary thought outside the box and was unpredictable, while Bobby was predictably "heroic" and strong, and played all the Ewing power games. J.R. could embrace a rivalry with Bobby for that reason. Gary, on the other hand, often didn't care about the power games, and often ran away when directly challenged, but if Gary really wanted something then he could go and get it.

The clearest confirmation of all this on Dallas was the scene where J.R. was concerned, thinking that Gary and Valene were coming back to live at Southfork, and then Sue Ellen let it slip that Gary and Valene would be living in California. J.R. then laughed and said "that's the best news I've heard all day".

JR was jealous of Gary. He resented him too. Gary got their mother's unconditional adulation while he had to work for it.
JR worked for everything he had while Gary was given and discarded it. And despite his drunken tirades and gambling, he was still accepted. YET JR gets yelled it for "simply business." He didn't respect Gary. He felt he was weak. Not realizing Gary was just different. His skills were elsewhere. Bobby was predictable. Gary was not.
Also too he was scared by Gary as he knew he could get whatever he wanted with some focus and discipline.

I think what J.R. resented about Gary above just about everything else was just how gullible he could be at times. Even Valene knew he was setting Gary up with that phony company yet he just couldn’t see it for himself. I think that flaw in Gary was like fuel for J.R. to stick it to him even more when the chance arose.

Miss Ellie said once "Bobby was given everything that J.R. had to fight for and Gary didn't care about".

So basically, Bobby is a rival to J.R. in what J.R cares about, and J.R. thinks Bobby gets special treatment but at least Bobby plays the game. Gary goes his own way.

Even so, J.R. didn't particularly like it when Pam was urging Bobby to stop "spreading the Bs" and become an executive full-time at Ewing Oil. J.R. was guarded and somewhat resentful when Bobby started wanting to see secret files and asking how J.R. gets others to vote along with him on important votes. J.R. said to Bobby "while you were out there spreading the Bs, playing football etc, I was at Ewing Oil under our father learning and making the company grow, and while I'm in charge at Ewing Oil there are certain things that I do alone and that's the way it's going to stay". J.R. then said to Bobby "Does that answer your question?", and Bobby replied "Oh yeah, it answered a few that I didn't even ask", as J.R. smiled.

Gary's response in Bobby's shoes would have either been:

1. Play along for a while, accepting J.R.'s answers at face value, and then quit later when J.R. shows his true colours
2. Play along for a while, knowing that J.R. is lying to him, and then quit later
3. Quit on the spot, have a rant at J.R. and leave
4. "Okay J.R. Me against you. Let's see who wins".

Gary would only do the fourth option if he REALLY cared about it, and that isn't the oil business for Gary. Bobby is pretty predictable when he's angry at someone. Gary is less predictable. J.R. doesn't like unpredictability when it comes to his Ewing Oil business or even in the family dynamic at Southfork Ranch.

It was funny when J.R. first showed up in Knots Landing, and Gary was pretty scared in recognizing that he had to stand up to J.R. directly in regards to J.R.'s plans to drill for oil offshore, which was environmentally bad, but cheaper for Ewing Oil. Valene and Karen basically had to give Gary encouragement to do the right thing. Gary did stand up to J.R. and did defeat J.R. on this by forcing an onshore drill at a more expensive cost for Ewing Oil, but J.R. then started posing to the Californian media as a oil man who was environmentally conscious and doing the right thing, so J.R. still got his own back and boosted his own media image and that of Ewing Oil.

The JR-Gary relationship was retconned (like other things) by Jacobs for "Knots Landing". JR wanted Gary away from Texas because he was a mere but real disturbance in his manipulate ways with Jock and Miss Ellie to get what he wanted. He was afraid of his presence factually, and I´m sure JR from "Dallas" didn´t consider Gary able to clean up his own shoes. After all, he did give a faulty company to him and, if Gary had had that potential, he soon would have redirected it and be successful.

But instead, he got all nervous when his drink fell all over the desk, with the women trying to clean his mess, and, soon after, he ran away again. By then, Gary wasn´t drinking (booze) and had the opportunity to reunite his family and start over. But he was weak and JR knew it. So the JR from "Knots" wasn´t the same JR we loved to hate on "Dallas": he laughed at poor Val in her face but didn´t threaten her again (unlikely), loaned money to Gary for a business (unlikely), and flirted with a wholesome housewife (unlikely).

Gary: "You are a bastard!"
JR: "I´ll tell Mama about it!"

JR didnt feel threatened by Gary in California. He later admitted he was scared of him... 'if that boy can direct his anger..."
J.R. also preferred Gary with Abby instead of Val, as long Gary and Abby stayed a long way from Dallas. J.R. thought Abby would bring out more of Gary's potential and increase the Ewing family's reputation across the country.

Trick-or-Treat Stevens

'The Lovely Michelle'
JR Ewing riding a horse in Season 14 (with James Beaumont and John Ross) was an unexpected but noteworthy scene.

The scene (Season 13) were Carter McKay offers Michelle Stevens money or power (his favor) always struck me a good scene.

The Miss Ellie and Cliff scene which pretty much ended the Ewing-Barnes feud was in one of the later seasons and was one of the series more important.

this scene has it all: JR’s legendary dealmaking powers strained to the limits against perhaps his most gritty, formidable opponents of all, a majestic John Parker score fusing soaring electric guitar, tinkly barroom piano, and plaintive bass clarinet like only the maestro could, a nod to Mss Ellie’s love of the land and Miss Charlie’s love of Darius…

hm, speaking of the fan-favorite young Miss Wade…

masterful acting, compelling drama, culinary intrigue, a searingly realistic frying sound echoing our exquisitely frazzled nerves as viewers, a Swiss-cheese-like sweater subtly foreshadowing a tragic exile in exotic Europe.. quite possibly the apotheosis of late 20th century television!

Now that you mention them, a good scene is when Charlie is slapped by Jennaskank...
