Dallas Character Vaughn Leland, What Were You Thinking?

Why on earth did Vaughn "get into bed" with J.R. to put the screws over on Cliff during the 1983-84 season? Didn't Vaughn team up with Cliff and others to ruin J.R. when oil prices were falling during the 1981-82 season? Two seasons previous, hadn't he gotten off on the prospect of having to foreclose on Southfork when the Asian wells weren't coming in? And wasn't Vaughn burned at the end of the 1979-80 season to the point where he was a suspect in J.R. shooting? The darned fool.

Vaughn helped Cliff against J.R. in Season 5 DVD because of payback for the Asian oil situation. What had changed by Season 7? J.R.'s money combined with J.R.'s reputation for being a winner, in comparison to Cliff's tightness and reputation for being a loser. I was feeling extremely sorry for Cliff near the end of Season 7 when he seemed to have been burned worse by J.R. than what he had been 2 years earlier, yet he struck oil on Gold Canyon 340 in the Gulf of Mexico just in time and he became very rich. Jordan Lee saved Cliff's backside by advocating Bull Dawson and the best offshore crew to replace the ones in J.R.'s pocket.

Regarding who shot J.R. at the end of Season 3. There were 5 clear suspects in my mind:

Sue Ellen Ewing
Kristin Shepard
Cliff Barnes
Vaughn Leland
Alan Beam

Jordan Lee would be another suspect, but his more pragmatic temperament makes it less likely, in my opinion.

All I can ever think when I see Vaughn Leland is that he looked like Jack Cassidy and they both died in house fires.

Maybe he set fire to Southfork in 1983 and they forgot to tell us.

For whatever reason, I can't remember how Vaughn Leland left Dallas. Can someone help me out? His final episode was the second episode of season 8, at a time when there was a lot of mystery about who shot Bobby, but what was Vaughn Leland doing on the show at that time?

By the way, I can't remember what Alan Beam's exit looked like, nor can Franklin Horner's exit. Can someone help me here too?

Interesting questions about the exits of those characters. To the best of my recollection, they just stopped appearing.

The last time I remember seeing Leland was right after Bobby was shot. He tried to pressure Cliff and Cliff threatened to report him for bad banking (or something like that). Then, he just never showed up again (at least not that I can remember).

Alan came back briefly in season 4 a few days after the shooting (possibly to gloat at his former mentor and enemy?) and bumped into Kristin in the hospital parking lot, telling her he had a rock-solid alibi and that the two of them could have made a good pair. They did have good chemistry, but alas they were headed to Chicago and LA, presumably never to see each other again.
