Victoria not returning for the finale

Back to my original post though. How can all those other actors return to a show that gave them the fame in the first place and yet Victoria didn't
I think what it comes down to is money. Although, by that point I think Victoria was principled enough and savvy enough that she wouldn't have returned even for money. She's different than the others though because she created a legit empire when she left. Her net worth is (varies depending on source) between 250 and 400 million dollars. She doesn't need the money.

The others like Patrick have net worths of about 10 million. That's not enough to maintain large homes, a lifestyle they're accustomed to and leave their children estates without bringing in more money for daily expenses and travel. So they do those paid autograph shows, B list movies of the week, etc.

Realistically Swan Song should have been the end. The show sucked after that and the women who'd grown somewhat strong were now weak, whiny and needy. Even Miss Ellie was now forced to do silly Angela Lansbury type mystery side shows away from Southfork that nobody cared about.

Why was Victoria so adamant that it had to be the last show? If she was only going to be in one episode anyway, why would she care?

The story may be apocryphal -- no matter who's asserted or repeated it.

Couldn’t agree with this more. For me it’s the apex of the show. Nothing after that quite feels the same when I watch it now. I would’ve been okay with this being the end. Didn’t Victoria once say that Dallas was a great show for about seven years or something to that effect? If she did then that would mean she agrees too.

Once it became apparent they wouldn’t be able to entice Victoria to come back, they should have pulled out all the stops to get Japhet and Boaz Harper instead. Sure, they probably would have had the exact same lives on their farm if JR had never been born, but it could have been a lesson about how the world didn’t revolve around Ewing Oil or something.

My understanding is that what she asked for was the guaranty that if she gave one final performance as Pam, there would be final closure for good on Bobby and Pam 's story, not that it absolutely positively had to be the final episode of Dallas.

Completely agree. Season 11 is just awful. 12 feels like a newer show

Nobody would have survived being run over and dying infront of their family but yet Bobby did.

I disagree with you completely. We the audience knew (I was 13 at the time and even I knew!) that they wouldn’t kill Pam after what happened with Bobby. I genuinely believe Victoria shot the car crash scene and walked away not caring. And that’s the excuse she gave time and time again - Pam is dead. No the first rule of soap opera is nobody’s dead unless you see the body (and even that rule is thrown out the window with Bobby)

We can agree to disagree., I feel that they deliberately misled both her and the audience, and then they trashed her character out of anger.

How did they mislead her? She was there throughout the Bobby dream scenario. It went down like a lead balloon with the audience. Of course they weren’t going to kill her. I was 13 and I was the audience and I didn’t feel mislead. I knew she wouldn’t be killed

They were angry at her and gave her the finger with their handling of her exit, I highly doubt that they were honest with her about anything. And that audience reaction to the dream season is exactly why she expected that Pam would be killed off and they wouldn't do what they unfortunately did.

But again I was 13 years old and KNEW they wouldn’t kill Pam. In fact all of the audience in the UK knew she wouldn’t be killed. We weren’t mislead. And again it’s blindingly obvious after the Bobby mess they wouldn’t dream of killing her in case she wanted to return.
I think you’re looking at it with hindsight but at the time there was absolutely no misleading

I agree that it was obvious they weren't going to create another dead character debacle, so she'd be alive somehow.

The only thing I was mislead on was my constant belief that Katherine's appearance at Pam's bedside was a red herring and would be used at the show's end eventually. That Pam didn't leave Bobby and Christopher of her own volition and Katherine instead kidnapped her. It made sense for Katherine who was used to being rich but was on the run from the law and her accounts likely frozen....would need mummified Pam for a rouse. She could now take over Pam's identity with a new look (explained away by burns) and have all of Pam's money.

No way they would’ve killed her off after the whole Dream debacle. They weren’t painting themselves into that corner again. That was obvious the second we saw the mummy scenes. In hindsight I wish they had killed her off though. If it wasn’t the accident itself that killed her then maybe Katherine could’ve given her a lethal injection when she showed up at the hospital and then just left, turning it into a murder but no one ever finds out the truth about what happened and thinks she just succumbed to the accident and internal injuries.

Being murdered and Bobby obsessed with avenging Pam would have played out far more realistically than Bobby hunting down April's kidnapper and seemingly grieving way more for April than he ever did for Pam....except sort of strangely flirting with the killer's daughter of course.

Victoria would have signed for one more year (1987-88), that's the irony, but they insisted on two more years. Season 11 DVD basically feels like proper Dallas gone very stale, whereas Season 12 DVD feels fresher because they are trying something different.
If this is the case it's a shame they did not take her up on the offer and use Season 11 to wrap up the show.

"Not caring". I'm baffled by that remark. Victoria graciously offered 2 years notice of her intention to leave. 2 years for the writers and producers to carefully construct a story for Pam's exit. It doesn't matter how this was achieved only that Victoria made her decision and was sticking with it. She filmed the tanker scene believing this was the exclamation mark on her character and her time on Dallas. It was the writers/producers who screwed up the character post tanker crash.

Victoria didn't have to however she appeared in Dallas Reunion: The Return to Southfork to offer fans a glimpse into the popularity of Dallas and continues to post positive things about her time on the series.

Your argument Victoria must return to a series that offered her fame would like telling me I must attend my high school reunion despite the fact I didn't like the majority of students. Some were downright bullies. Rather than attend an event and feign interest I'd much rather stay well away from that environment. Ok...not quite on the same level as Victoria but it was her decision, her choice. It's as simply as that.
