General Hospital Watching General Hospital

Watching the Spencer/Cyrus scenes the other day, I realized Spencer is a linchpin character linking the three major villains in town as extended family!

"Uncle Cyrus" is the half-brother of Laura Collins, Spencer's grandmother.
"Uncle Victor" is the brother of Stavros Cassadine, Spencer's grandfather.
"Uncle Sonny" is the brother of Courtney Matthews, Spencer's mother.

I’ve never been a big fan of these storylines when someone has a serious illness and their husband or wife is virtually the last one to know. “So and so can never know. It will destroy him/her if they ever found out.” Yet the person that has the illness will tell everyone else in town what they have and how bad it is and hope it doesn’t get back to the one person they don’t want to know? It’s just so unrealistic to me that this can ever happen in real life but I guess that’s why we call it daytime drama.

Welcome back Cyrus!

Jeff Kober is a good actor

Get rid of Cody, an annoying, useless character.

Get rid of Nina, she is being rewarded for being a lying opportunist.

Break up Sam/Dante, Liz/Finn - no chemistry

Sonny/Nina disgusts me.

Carly storyline has some potential, Linda Purl is doing great!

Gregory Harrison's character deserves better than Alexis who has become a self righteous bore.

Give Kristina something meaningful to do.

Bring back Jax and Jason!

It's definitely great to have Cyrus back, wish I could say the same about Esme. After Mac has a grown child he didn't know about, I can't imagine Felicia being Esme's mother. There may be another surprise in the plot.

The only point of the Jacksonville story is to establish Carly and Drew as a couple. I wish the plot would have been better thought out. First off, it doesn't make any sense at all that Carly wouldn't go back to her family if a serial killer was threatening her loved ones. Couldn't the story have been told before or after there was killing in Port Charles? It's typical Carly to suddenly take an interest in something (her mother's grave, which she never visited) that she hadn't thought of for decades, but the graveyard story is just plain boring. As if local politicians and the press hadn't dealt with it long ago. Carly should just take her mother's coffin (or what's left of it) to Port Charles and be done with it.

Good points. I think the horrendous Sonny/Nina coupling left the writers with a challenge to write Carly, and didn't think it through.
Also, I wish that they could write Drew better - I would rather see Drew/Sam than Dante/Sam.

I cannot stand Cameron M's constant grinning. I know it's CM's thing, but in order for me to believe this is Drew, he needs to (at the very least) replicate old Drew's quiet, laconic behavior with very little smiling and none of the Miss Mary Sunshine attitude. If anything, new Drew should be openly angry, even hostile at times considering how he was held captive and all that stuff that happened. Instead, he's become some kind of "town counselor" listening to everyone's problems.

For well over a year, fans were complaining about the way the show over-exposed Carly---she was seemingly always in a front burner story of her own, then also injected into everyone else's stories. If LW is guaranteed three days a week, then they have to inject her into other people's stories, I guess, because her own story/-ies isn't sufficient. Sending her away like this gets Carly out of everyone else's business (a definite plus), and it allows a lot more flexibility in filming her material (since she only interacts with two other actors, for the most part). Instead of LW reporting to set four days out of five to work with ten or twelve actors on a dozen different sets, she might be able to film all her stuff in two or three days using the same two or three "Jacksonville" sets.

I would buy into Sonny/Nina more if they actually depicted more affection between them. On paper, this man chose to leave his wife and entire family to be with this other woman. Sonny's attitude/feelings should be quite passionate, something along the lines of "I'll give it all up to be with you!" complete with grand demonstrations of his love. It's a soap, for God's sake--you can't over-do the romance. Instead, it's like they're just friends and spend more time apart (scenes with others) than together (proclaiming their love, or at least trying to convince us of it). They don't live together nor do they have anything tying them together (running a business together, kids in common, a "love on the run" plot or anything like that). We just occasionally have scenes where they remind us they're supposed to be an item. No wonder people don't latch onto the pairing--the writers give them nothing to point to and say "That's a great romance."

It's a well-known soap tradition that when writers want to push a certain pairing, you see them all.the.time, with everyone around them "propping" their romance (that is, talking about how wonderful they are together and generally selling the pairing to the viewers). They'll do this in an effort to force a story on the viewers (like the way they propped Peter August for YEARS despite fans largely hating the character). In this situation, I can't help but think the lack of "heat" presented on screen is a means for the writers to 'back out' of the plotline if the viewers object.

Oz is the hook killer's first bad victim choice. I can't stand when soaps start killing day players. Who's next? Smoltz or Linc? But I think Oz is a goner because all the victims kinda point to Trina.

Ummmm...okay.....?

I keep falling back on the idea that there is more than one assailant--one who attacked Ava, then another one going after the others. I picture someone deciding to go on a killing spree after seeing Ava's attack on the news, figuring that if they killed people in the same manner (a copycat killer), then their crimes might be blamed on the one who tried to kill Ava. The venom/poison angle has not been mentioned in the press coverage of Brando and Diane's attacks, so perhaps killer #2 doesn't know that they know about it. If there's no poison on the hook in Oz's attack, it will only reinforce my idea that there is a copycat killer/attacker on the loose.

I don't expect this to be an Edge of Night-level soap mystery by any stretch, but so far they've done a good job of offering up just enough clues and comments to make a decent-sized list of suspects and angles on what is going on.

The biggest surprise about the Jacksonville storyline was the out of the blue kumbaya moment between Carly and Peyton, but Drew telling Bobbie how amazing and loyal Carly is was just awful to listen to.

I wish Cody hadn't been handed over to the Bells. Has Dominique never wondered why her sister suddenly has a baby? And why didn't the sister tell her about Cody after Leopold died? Leopold should have just sold the baby to strangers.

Lucy is her own worst enemy and it's fun to watch her do it.

I assume Peyton's about-face (involving Virginia's grave) happened that way because someone decided the plot was a dud and this was the quickest way to kill it. Maybe LP only signed on for X number of episodes and her time had run out. Who knows? It just felt as if someone was in a hurry to shove that plot into the trash can.

I have been reading some interesting chat online concerning the Bobbie/Drew scenes....not just the gag-worthy dialogue about Saint Caroline of The Perpetual Smirk. People were saying they were flirting. Can you imagine Bobbie swooping in to snatch Drew out of Carly's clutches? Tony Jones would be fist-bumping from beyond the grave.

As I understand it, Dominique was involved with Leopold when she was put into Shadybrook. The writers took some liberties, saying she gave birth while away (though most say she was only away 3 mos.). If she was indeed in an institution when she gave birth, the authorities would have given the baby to her family to raise. Obviously nothing was said about the baby when Dom got out of Shadybrook (since he's a retcon); even if the father was Leopold (evil villain of the piece), Dom would have said something and made some effort to get her baby back once he was out of the picture. And if Mac was the father, she certainly would not have kept Cody a secret from him. So yeah, it's sloppy.

I can only hope that Elizabeth's parents will win men over on screen, because on paper they don't convince me.

Spencer in prison could have been boring, but Cyrus and TempBrando in his new role as an inmate make it fun.

Robert, a man in his seventies, in a love triangle between Holly and Diane would be something you don't see very often on soaps. So far I find the chemistry between Robert and Diane a bit forced, but I'm open to what's to come.

I have never been a Holly fan, but the reintroduction was wriiten quite well

I am glad it will mean more screen time for Robert, who is my all-time favorite GH character

I should be over such things by now, but my brain just keeps screaming Billy Moses is only 62! Carolyn's age doesn't matter as much since we know nothing of her, but in theory Jeff Webber is old enough to be a great-grandfather (as Monica is). I was hoping the Jeff recast would be able to share some history-laden scenes with Dr. Monica, but in this case I hope Leslie Charleson remains offscreen. Maybe part of my indigestion is because this Jeff recast has occurred on the heels of the bizarre de-SORASing of Tucker McCall on Y&R.

Well, to be fair in most media that "man in his seventies" would be fought over by two women in their thirties. Part of the draw of the (possible) love triangle is the fact that it's (more or less) age-appropriate. But when all is said and done, I don't imagine they would give Diane equal footing in such a story, since Holly/Robert is one of those "one true pairings" soap fans always talk about. Robert/Holly approached Luke/Laura in popularity back in the day. And we need to remember that none of the three are even on contract, so their appearances will be just as sporadic as everyone else's.

One of the more interesting games I plan to play during Emma Samms's return is keeping a mental note of just how much she actually appears on screen. ES is still fighting Long Covid and agreed to this stint against the advice of her doctors. I'm sure Frank V will use every trick in the book to pad out her actual screen time, or otherwise make it easier for her to film her material. I'm pretty sure that was a stand-in they used for most of Thursday's episode. "Holly" was seen in the entire episode, but it was only in that last ten seconds that we saw Emma's face. She will also likely not be doing many "action" scenes, more likely a lot of sitting/standing in place scenes. I imagine they'll probably have her "hiding out" someplace (from Victor), allowing her to film a lot of stuff on one set (likely sitting on a sofa). There will also be a lot of scenes where other characters catch us up on what Holly is up to and where she is (rather than having Samms filming filler scenes). It's a game, obviously, but I'm rooting for them to make it work (and not be immediately noticeable). I love watching clever stagecraft.

I also get a kick out of Lisa LoCicero's unique situation with GH. She grew up watching (and loving) Robert and Holly, Robert and Anna---all that stuff. She's been on the record for YEARS saying she still crushes on Tristan Rogers. So here she is years later playing Olivia Falconeri (now Quartermaine) and behaving like a lovestruck schoolgirl as she plays scenes with him. And there she was, telling Robert he'd "better prepare himself for a shock," leading him to "dead" Holly, who just happened to wash up alive at the Quartermaines. She gets to play all these heavy-duty fan service scenes with her idols from teenager-hood.

Terrific performance by Michael E Knight blasting Anna for involving Lucy. Also Kudos to Finola Hughes for her portraying the suppressed conflicted thoughts that
Anna had about her choices.
Dump Cody - could care less if he is Mac's son, and he is a jerk. Mac deserves better, and Britt deserves better. With KT leaving, Cody has no other purpose.
Michael is not entirely wrong about Ned, and he is not wrong at all about Sonny and Nina, but he is overdoing it.
Sonny and Nina is a disaster, and Nina needs to go.
Olivia was right that she can't trust Nina, and Nina should sell.
I am so glad TJ corrected her - Doctor Ashford - and told her off after Nina tried to make issues for Willow and TJ.
Charles S continues to excel as Victor - he is displaying a broad range and enhancing Victor's character.
Esme as the hook is too obvious - a programmed Holly? Anna's sister? Liz?
I guess we will see
