Watching The Colbys for the First Time

Miss Texas 1967

Do the DVD subtitles not work past season 1 for anyone else? I've just started season 2 and the subtitle track is selectable but doesn't actually bring up the text on the screen. Not really a big deal as they're obviously still speaking just fine, I just enjoy watching with subtitles.

After finishing the show my only real question is what was the point of Bliss? They could have cut her entire plot and the show wouldn't have been any different.

Was she really the only irrelevant character?

In their bizarre quest to clone DYNASTY as it had become in season 6 (and not DYNASTY as it was in season 1), the COLBYS writers decided that Jason should have a set each of male and female children, same as Blake had. It was just pointless. I think it would have made sense if Connie had an alienated child which she had disinherited (as some have suggested Philip as a nominee) and would come back and try to reverse Connie's will. And the show could have used Stanwyck's departure to reshuffle the shares sometime in the second season. But as she ended up, Bliss was just exhaling CO2 on the property.

Oh dear, that's awful. Now I don't like it anymore.

I didn't get the impression that The Colby writers were copying Dynasty's formula of two male and two female children.

I get the feeling that the creators learned from the Dynasty experience better to have more than two offspring in case the original actors (Al Corley and Pamela Sue Martin) decided to leave or didn't work out.

There seemed to be variety in that Monica and Miles were twins, and Bliss was the youngest. Only later was Jeff revealed to be a half sibling.

I found Claire Yarlett a likeable actress and she had more to do in Season 2 when they concentrated on the younger actors.

No, I agree. Obviously Bliss was just there so they didn't have invent an Amanda later on. At least The Colbys had those children from the beginning unlike Dynasty that had to invent more when actors decided to leave. Bliss was Amanda in waiting. It's really obvious.

On Dynasty Amanda was a Fallon replacement and Adam filled Steven's void, so to speak, for a while at least.

I did think her season 2 story with Kolya was a massive improvement but she indeed was one of the few characters they never managed to build up. Great as I thought that story was, it ended up being more about Kolya than Bliss. The actress playing Bliss also never grew as a performer.

It just seemed so weird to me that they specifically had a spin off show with brand new characters all around and yet wrote the plot for Bliss as if she was part of a different show. It's not like she was someone they inherited and had to start writing for but couldn't think of a reason to bring her back (like Dominique, who I liked but who disappeared from The Colbys very quickly), she was their own character and they did nothing with her. On the DVD the cast interviews make it clear that money was a big part of the production, I'm gonna say someone should have suggested chopping the Bliss character to make room for spending elsewhere. The Kolya plot was entertaining but ultimately there was no reason for it, even the impact it had on Jason's business dealings was minimal, it basically amounted to having Jason receive those nasty letters and added another group of suspects in the shooting, neither of which really boosted the impact of the story. Bliss and Kolya got engaged and we didn't even get a reaction from Sable or Jason, not that they would have hated the idea I think seeing as they'd warmed to him by that point but it really did separate the couple from the rest of the family.

Honestly, I think Bliss only existed because of the issues they had with "only" giving Blake and Alexis two children originally - they wanted to avoid having to invent siblings to take the place of Monica if Scoggins had decided to leave so that's why Bliss existed. She was basically a "just in case" sort of character.

Bliss’ role is what they call in the Royal Family the heir and the ‘spare’ ie; she was a back up.

She even admits it herself in the scene outside the house with Sable saying who cares for a brat with no special talents.

I think her role was created because the creators were keen to include environmental stuff with the pipeline. There’s parallel movement in Dynasty with the Bart Fallmont character.

Bliss' character was intentionably pliable, I think. Her interest at any given time was whatever her current boyfriend was interested in. That way she could be the spare Colby child that producers could fall back on, the understudy for multiple roles waiting in the wings. Claire Yarlett was already a potential starlet in the Aaron Spelling Productions stable, being groomed to move from main cast to lead role in a looming future series. She originated the role of Dakota Lane in Rituals before leaving for I don't know what reason, and next we saw her on TV on TC, which increased her visibility. Adrian Paul said words to the effect he'd been excited by the TC gig, had hopes for a longer run but shortly after being signed on was dismayed to hear that Claire's hours on TC were being reduced because she was filming elsewhere. Though Kolya appeared after Connie went on her world trip, AP recalled meeting her on set. Perhaps he was already filming his story earlier than we realise. Stops and starts and changes in direction in other stories likely caused by Stephie Beacham being re-signed at the last minute after her original 6-months gig was up & BS leaving earlier than planned, among other things + CY possibly being unable to reshoot her scenes may be why the Bliss-Kolya story felt separate and unintegrated with the other plots.

They say men look for wives like their mothers. I'm amused that Bliss's first boyfriend was modelled on the real-life son of her on-screen father: the young and bearded Fraser Heston, marine biologist and expert white-water river guide. Baby Moses himself in The Ten Commandments. IIRC, Sean McAllister's environmental concerns had to do with the seas/waterways.

She took screen time away from Fallon running away, acting exasperated, and calling out Miles' and Jeff's names. Any way you look at it, it was unforgivable.
