"Existentialism and Excess: The Life and Times of Jean-Paul Sartre" by Gary Cox
Sartre was one of the more fascinating figures of the 20th century.
I find that I agree with the main points of his philosophy, although there is also a lot I don't understand. But I wouldn't want to emulate his lifstyle.

Frankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost by Michael C. Bender.

51ZxjELsCNS.jpg

A fascinating and non partisan insight into Donald Trump and the 2020 US Presidential election by a journalist who Trump liked enough to give Mr Bender more access to the President than most others. Trump still comes across as a narcissist and an unpleasant and dangerous man even though the author was fair and neutral. Most of the revelations in the book have been reported in the media but reading them all together in chronological order is still shocking.

I tend to read very grown up books for clever people that most people on here wouldn't understand. No pictures in them at all and some use foreign words like 'joie de vivre' or 'buenas noches' which I have no trouble understanding. If there is any graphic sexual content in them, I tend to skip through a bit because I am more cerebral in my outlook even though I am really well hung.

In fact. I'm off to the library now to look for books about black holes and the Periodic Table.

Living Better: How I Learned To Survive Depression by Alastair Campbell.

hbg-title-9781529331844-77.jpg

This book is really an autobiography starting with Alastair Campbell's childhood all the way through to the present day. I was surprised at how good a writer he is as he tells his story in such an engaging way that the book was a bit of a page turner. I could relate to many of the things he experienced although his depression is way more serious than anything I've experienced. A fascinating read for anyone with an interest in the subject regardless of whether or not they are living with depression.

The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels
I'm not a religious person but efforts to inculcate me a child have left me with an interest in the subject on an academic level.
This book is an introduction to the texts found at Nag Hammadi, Egypt, the best known of which is probably the Gospel of Thomas, which give a somewhat different view of early Christianity than that found in the traditional New Testament.

I've just finished "The Famous Five Visit Their First Brothel". I didn't feel comfortable with the amount of graphic sexual content though. Big, burly Julian was taken advantage of in a very evocative manner and Dick was wishing he was back on Kirrin Island again.

Elizabeth and Monty - The Untold Story of Their Intimate Friendship

81FoQsQQWYL.jpg

I absolutely loved this book, so much so that I was sorry when I finished reading it. A week ago before I started reading this book I knew nothing about Monty Clift nor his work but it encouraged me to watch his films and I've now seen about a third of his total output and I've become a bit of a fanboy.

Although the book meant to be about the friendship between the 2 actors, it's more of a dual biography of them. The book is packed with detail, well researched and full of interesting stories about both of them. As I was reading this, I couldn't help feeling that it will one day be adapted to make a film because their stories are so rich and fascinating.

A Gentleman in Noscow-Amor Townes. Awesome novel! (Appropos of nothing, I see the character Anna as a Russian Paige Matheson)

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: The Affair of the Gunrunners' Gold
Pretty self-explanatory. The characterisations are a little off; Illya in particular is portrayed as more jocular than he appears on TV, and the title really should be The Gunrunners' Gold Affair; but an entertaining read nonetheless.

Landslide: The Final Days of The Trump Presidency by Michael Wolff

Reading this book I couldn't help thinking Trump was seriously deranged and what was America thinking when they elected this psychopath to be their leader. It's a brilliantly researched book and gives a comprehensive account of Trumps last days as President including the 2020 election, the insurrection and how he tried to overturn the democratic choice of the people. Well worth reading.

I’m currently reading My Amy by Tyler James, about Amy Winehouse and her relationship with her best friend Tyler. Absolutely heartbreaking.

All That Heaven Allows: A Biography of Rock Hudson by Mark Griffin

0ac0d469-b33e-4238-9579-5352b204c0a8-All_That_Heaven_Allows_hc_c.JPG

I only know of Rock Hudson from McMillan and Wife, his films with Jane Wyman and the fact that he died of AIDS at a time when the condition was badly stigmatised. This book filled in a lot of the gaps in my knowledge of the actor and he had a fascinating life. Most surprising is that it's generally believed that he was very closeted about his sexuality but according to this book he was very open about it and a large number of people knew but it just wasn't reported in the media. I finished this book having a new respect and appreciation for the actor who by all accounts was a good, well liked and generous man.

Daredevil by Leslie Charteris
Not a Saint novel but it does introduce the character of Inspector Teal who would go on to be a recurring nemesis for Simon Templar in the Saint books.
