That's where Pam's neediness for a baby came in handy: it gave Sue Ellen something to smugly take away from her. So, in a strange way, Pam helped pull the family together.
I still think that scene where JR went off on Pam and her “non-traditional parentage” leading to a patented “righteously outraged Bobby slug to the gut” and peak-level “snarling Jock pulls his boys apart and shows who’s boss” was about the best scene in the entire series…

Pam pulling the family together and Jock trying to pry them apart?! He wasn’t even Takapa yet…

Gore Vidal one said, "People don't want love -- or even sex; they wanted power over other people."

That was undoubtedly true about JR. And once she emerged from the emotional gulch that was her marriage, it turned out to be true about Sue Ellen as well.

J.R.'s worst treatment of Sue Ellen was his general treatment of her at times rather than anything in particular. In the early years in particular, he treats her as an annoyance, far below any business priorities that he has.

At the same time, Sue Ellen is often very annoying and where it's hard to feel sympathy for her. I was actually very angry with her after the Mickey car stuff, like Lucy was.

J.R. just needed to treat Sue Ellen like a loving wife, i.e. include her properly in his life. He didn't do that.

It's interesting to find in the results that J.R. putting Sue Ellen in the sanitarium is winning(or won??) For one thing, I just can't see that beating out cheating with her sister.
I'm the opposite. J.R. cheating with Kristin was sex. What is that compared to confining your wife to a sanitarium, with her freedom taken away, and while she clearly had a drink problem?

It's not like J.R. fell in love with Kristin, either. She's the one who shot him, so angry was she with him.

While..I realize J.R. didn't exactly do it with her best interest at heart, she did need the help. Yes, he did plainly said "we both have too many secrets. and I can't trust you to keep your mouth shut"(or something to that effect).
The biggest thing was Sue Ellen's drinking publicly embarrassing the Ewing family. That's how Jock, Miss Ellie and J.R. saw it.
