Matthew, what season one episodes aren`t transfered to hd? How do you know?

Just click on "Series" and then on Dynasty/Dynasty.

It says:
"This series has been partially transferred into HD and has the following masters:

Network 4x3 HD (episodes 14 through 217, Seasons 2 - 9. Season 1 transfer in progress, due June 2017.)"

Nah, I have to absolutely LOVE a show to buy the dvds. For me, that's Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel. I could probably throw in ER and The Practice as well. I mostly watch Dynasty just because, let's face it, life is better with Liz Gillies in it.

A few times when I’ve watched shows in HD on really good TVs it has made me feel a bit like I was on a bad trip. Actors movements seemed unnatural, I won’t say too fast but they seemed jittery. I didn’t like that.

Only shows that were shot directly on Video could not get an HD upgrade, but those are not that many.

Mattie, do you think Spelling's 90s soaps like 90210 or Melrose Place were shot on video?

Oh, what I would give to have Melrose Place in HD quality (at least seasons 2-4) and with original music intact.

But, I assume I'll never get to see that.

No way, those were cetrtainly shot on film.
In many cases you can find this information on IMDB as well, if you look up the show and then click on "full technical specs".
But i really can't imagine any one hour night time show to be recorded just on videotape. That is just the case with daytime soaps and some of the sitcoms.

Well, the first two seasons of "Buffy" were shot on video for instance so I wouldn't be surprised that "90210" and "Melrose Place" were shot on video too. The two last seasons of "Dynasty" and "The Reunion" certainly were. :-(

Nope, shot on Film and later edited on Video. That's a HUGE difference, there can be a HD release any day, because film material does exist.
S8 and 9 of Dynasty do already exist in HD for some years by the way, as the film material was rescanned in HD and already used for the R1 DVD Release. If those weren't shot on film, they would never look as good as they do.

And i really can't imagine for Buffy Season 1 being shot on video. It's HIGHLY unlikely.
Like with Star Trek TNG, it was much cheaper to edit in the FX later on video. But they would have to rescan the whole thingy and recreate the FX (special effects) for a HD release.
That happened with Star Trek TNG and the X-Files already.

Look out for example for "filmed with Panavison Camera and Lenses" or such in the end credits. Those are always hints for FILM cameras and they are mentioned in every episodes end-credits of BH 90210 and Melrose.
So... both definitly shot on film, no doubt about that.

edit: Just found the confirmation for "Buffy" on the IMDB page in the technical specs section as well (as i mentioned before):

Negative Format 16 mm film (1997-1998)
35 mm film (1998-2003) - remaining seasons.

Printed Film Format: Video (=edited on Video).

So, Buffy was completly shot on film as well, just on smaller film (16mm) in it's first seasons

Yes, you're right, it is 16mm and not video. But still, I remember that a website explained that the first two seasons of"Buffy" would never be avalaible in HD and 16/9 because the original material is not good enough.

As for "Dynasty", I've just checked ending credits and seasons 1 to 9 were all shot with Panavision indeed (like you said, the films were transferred on video for seasons 8 and 9 - by Encore Video).
However, I just hope that seasons 8 and 9 have not been shot in 16 mm rather that in 35 mm because if it's the case, we will never have them in 16/9.
