You have been given the responsibility of creating an advertisement to promote the upcoming release (I hope) of Dallas on Blu-Ray. Select 5 scenes which best illustrates why this series was must watch. Here are 5 of my favourites.

  1. Who shot JR?
  2. Jock Ewing's "Real Power" speech to Bobby.
  3. JR, Bobby and Ray arrive at Southfork to discover Miss Ellie sitting alone at the dining room table and tell her the news they didn't find Jock.
  4. Pam storms JR's office and rips into him over sending her island hopping.
  5. Katherine runs down Bobby and we hear Pam's almighty scream.

I would simply have a drone shot of Southfork, with sound bites from the show. Alongside that big facts printed on screen - 300 million viewers in 57 countries - 14 super charged seasons now on BluRay for the very 1st time....then the theme tune kicks in with very quick clips of the shooting, the fire, the office explotion (dream season), the oil well explosion and the cast...DALLAS end of ad.

The various cliffhangers are prone to over-exploiting -- even, or especially, 'Who Shot J.R.?'

I think I'd mostly do a montage of bits from various family fight scenes, whether it's over drinks before dinner, or at the annual barbecue, etc... With the occasional shot of the ranch or requisite acts of violence spliced in, a voice-over referring to the fact that DALLAS became 'the most successful drama series in global television history'.

And dramatic music and stuff. Maybe from Warren's "Penultimate"...

1. Pam accepting Bobby’s proposal in Swan Song

2. J.R. being shot in his office

3. J.R. taking down Jock’s portrait in season 10 (DVD) and telling John Ross that “This is Ewing Oil.”

4. Miss Ellie getting the call about Jock’s helicopter crash

5. Pam discovering Bobby in the shower

For people who have never seen it before, you are in for a treat

Several years ago I watched this video continuously and until exhaustion as if hypnotized.

Then real life takes over and sometimes you forget this sort of thing....

Yes, real life takes over, but forget?................
Never!

I would show the following clips with a narrator; "Meet the head of the Ewing Family"
Jock talking to Bobby in Ellie saves the day saying, There's just no way you can build another Southfork, not in six lifetimes.

Narrator; "The Matriarch"
Miss Ellie's speech from Waterloo at Southfork, "We may be right, we may be wrong....etc"

Narrator; " Their youngest son who brings home his new bride"
The scene of the family in the living from Digger's Daughter where Jock asks Pam when is her brother going to give up his crusade against the Ewings.

Narrator; "And if you thought that was enough, just wait until you meet the big brother............
The philanderer and his neglected, alcoholic wife".

Scene from Call Girl, keep that child you're carrying safe, it's the only thing standing between you and the gutter.

Scene from Rodeo, I want you to smile at me the way you did for that cowboy etc.

Yes.
I would include one of Cliff's scenes shouting "I'm going to destroy that family!", followed by bits of scenes that look better (or even a little deceitful) out of context.
Lucy (in her scene with Miss Ellie about the possibility of getting breast cancer) "why me, grandma, why meeee?"
Who shot JR! but using the scene from shooting Bobby instead.
Pam's accident in the hayloft followed by Cliff looking at JR "she's dead! You bastard!"

I liked the style of TNT Dallas' promo very much:

I'd love ath. similar for Lorimar Dallas.
Today's way of media consumption and a (probably shorter) attention span make it difficult to include 5 major moments in a promo without losing gravitas.

You can hardly appreciate the significance when Sue Ellen was standing in Holly Harwood's bedroom with a trembling lip if you had not watched her for at least two years prior. I wonder if in today's streaming environment Jock's death for example would have been the big deal as it has been experienced back then.

That's an interesting video. I wish TNT Dallas had been done a bit earlier and without CC.
Dallas was so successful in it's time because of it's timing. As well as the ensemble cast and everything else which helped make it huge.
I hate to think it, but today it would most probably drown in the sea of modern so called drama, homegrown TV and the over use of cheap reality programmes that are forced upon us today.

Yes. From time to time, we got a glimpse of some potential. I'm no defender of CC, but she wrote the great send-off of JR and she accepted her mistake when SueEllen's role was increased after the first few episodes.
(On the other hand we got severe blunders like killing off Christopher, ignoring the show's rich history, but giving us 80s comebacks with alumnis from "Who is the boss" or "Fall Guy".)

But foremost Dallas belonged to the 80s and not in the 21st century. Realistically a family with such wealth would behave like the Logans in Succession and that's sth. I don't want the Ewings to be associated with, that's dysfunctional on another level. But the Ewings always stuck together when needed (including in TNT S2).

Thinking about it Dallas was more kind of 60s - with the family meeting for dinner at 6 or sons calling their father Sir and their mother Miss.

I also remember this video. Then we followed TNT Dallas and the enthusiasm has deflated.

I believe network TV will not offer such dramas any longer, they've tried more often than I thought: the music soap with Susan Sarandon or the religious grifters one with Kim Cattrall (good fun) and Prodigal Son, the serial killer-soap which had at least two seasons. Promised Land had the vine valley but minus the Yellowstone photography (which is like a part of the cast) and irritated with a flashback-storyline, too less drama and no easy-to-love/hate characters. I liked it nevertheless but I see why it failed.

Network TV in the US doesn't have much more money to spend on serialized stories. I'm certain they would be rather independent from the almighty Dick Wolf Productions but their too busy keeping the status-quo. Streamers are open to serialized shows but not to the soap genre or with a family as relatable as the Waltons, Ingalls or Lawrences. Star Trek, Star Wars, The Walking Dead, Interview the Vampire are also serialized franchises and all of them exceed the background as it was also done by Yellowstone (Western and soap, also a franchise) or Succession (office/business) the soap who managed to avoided to be called soap by most critics.

I feel as though I live on another planet, the only ones I've heard of are star wars, star trek and The Waltons. The only one I've watched is The Waltons oh and Little House.
All those other dramas/series are alien to me, I'm by no means stuck in the past, but there's just too many now and I haven't got a clue how or where to navigate them on the numerous channels and platforms so I prove my own point really.

5. powerful financier Ben Maxwell is caught and photographed in a love nest with beautiful model Leanne Rees and her unsuspecting best friend Pamela Barnes Ewing

4. a mysterious and ruggedly dashing man approaches a beautiful young employee running an errand at a world-class department store.

“Pamela?”

“Yes.”

“Do you remember me?”

“No.”

“Well you should. I’m your husband!”

“Ed?”

3. a fearsome criminal gang abducts Bobby at gunpoint on a gravelly road in the middle of nowhere. Bad guys Al and Will register their disgust at having stalked and trapped “the wrong Ewing”, but their partner Faye points out that even if Bobby’s not the intended goose he could indeed still lay a golden egg

2. dastardly young criminal Willie Gust, holding young Lucy (who’d run away from home after not being allowed to hire edgy Austin band The Coffins to perform at her birthday party) hostage, calls the cops who have him surrounded “turkeys”

and…

1. a fluffy-haired, tremendously virile and handsome young man sneaks around a corner on a bustling city sidewalk and launches a football into the crowd. Bobby snares the pigskin out of the air, narrowly avoids a collision with unsuspecting passersby, and quickly realizes this could only mean one thing: a reunion with his best friend and fellow Texas Longhorn gridiron superstar Taylor “Guzzler” Bennett!

..the promo would be an artistic triumph, but precisely zero people would purchase the set.
