Dear God. He's off to a flying start.

Donald Trump has hit back over Meryl Streep's criticism of him as she received a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes.

Mr Trump tweeted: "Meryl Streep, one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes.

"She is a Hillary flunky who lost big."

Streep had referred to Mr Trump during her Globes acceptance speech without naming him.

"It kind of broke my heart,'' the three-time Oscar-winning actress told the Golden Globes audience in Beverly Hills on Sunday.

"This instinct to humiliate, when it's modelled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody's life. Because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing."

Streep said she had been stunned by the president-elect mocking a disabled reporter during a campaign appearance.

Mr Trump tweeted: "For the 100th time, I never 'mocked' a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him 'groveling' when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!"

Mr Trump, who is due to be inaugurated in less than two weeks, performed an impression of Serge Kovaleski, who has a congenital joint condition, at a rally in South Carolina during the presidential campaign trail in November last year.

This is all so very childish.
She's a well-known actress and he is going to be president. These people should know that public/online bickering and insults are not going to improve anything.

Unless there's a way to undo the results of the election, it's "over and out". He's won, he IS going to be the president. It's what the majority of the voters wanted.

She can still speak out against him if she chooses. It being America and the land of free speech and all. And that's not really how the American voting system seems to work, Hilary had the majority of votes. Baffling I know.

He's childish. A better man, a political man surely wouldn't care about an actress' opinion of him. But he's petty like that and so it's a big deal and it will go on Twitter and this, folks, is the soon to be president of America.

I suppose Twitter wars are a step up from wars over fictional weapons of mass nonsense.

Respectfully, the majority of voters (54%) voted against Trump and almost 3 million more voted for Hillary Clinton than voted for him. Regardless of that, in a democracy voters should be allowed to continue to express their opinions and shouldn't just morph into sycophantic supporters of a bigot. Donald Trump is soon to be the most powerful man in the world and he is upset by a comment made by a Hollywood actress? Vice-President Joe Biden was right, Trump should "grow up". Hillary's words may turn out to be more true than anyone realised at the time when she said "A man who can be provoked by a tweet should not have his hands anywhere near the nuclear codes".

What's interesting is that Meryl Streep didn't refer to Trump by name, she just spoke generally against hate directed at different sections of society but Trump recognised himself in what she said.

I applaud Ms Streep for calling out Trump over mocking a man's disability. Trump claims he never did but the video suggests otherwise:

The kind of hate and intolerance displayed by Trump should be challenged whenever it occurs regardless of whether or not he is President of the USA or President of the Kool-Aid drinkers society.

I've always loved Meryl Streep and now I love her just that little bit more.

Yes, and since he's already won he doesn't need to defend himself anymore.

:confuse: Are you saying that the majority of the American citizens voted for Hillary Clinton?

No, I didn't say that at all. I said the majority voted against Trump, not for him as you suggested. A majority also voted against Clinton but more voted for her than any other candidate so I can fully understand why her supporters feel justified to continue challenging Trump's policies of hate because it's not what most American voters wanted.

Pearls before swine.

However, being too much of a clod to recognise Streepy's brilliance is pretty low down on Trump's list of misdemeanours, both past and future.

They had to vote twice? What's the point of voting against a candidate?

I don't get what point you're trying to make.

54% of US voters voted for candidates other than Trump so it's incorrect to say a Trump victory is "what the majority of the voters wanted" because what the majority of voters wanted was a President that wasn't Donald Trump.

I see. But if it was unlikely that the third candidate would win, then why didn't the 54% anti-Trump voters vote for Clinton? I mean, if it was SO important that Trump shouldn't win.

Most of them did vote for Clinton but Trump still won and will be President. However, that doesn't mean the majority of Americans that wanted a different outcome shouldn't express their disappointment of the result and Meryl Streep was absolutely right to use the platform she was given to speak out against hate. I don't think it can be said enough times that mocking someone's disability is a totally disgusting way to behave and I hope more people will follow Ms Streep's lead.

Most of them did vote for Clinton
And the ones who didn't vote for Trump or Clinton also didn't want Clinton as president. Trump got the biggest percentage of votes, I'm not saying that this was the ideal outcome, but it was fair, wasn't it? And the people of America did this, it was their decision to vote for Trump and not to vote - en masse - for Clinton.
Meryl Streep was absolutely right to use the platform she was given to speak out against hate
But was it general speech against hate? Either way, she had the right to do it. I don't know if it was the proper occasion to do so...maybe it was.

I can't disagree with that, and Trump definitely deserves the criticism. "I don't think it can be said enough times"...well, at some point it starts to feel like beating a dead horse, or ammunition disguised as genuine concern for that disabled person. It's not like anyone can un-do what happened, so is it really necessary to jump on the bandwagon and revive the story over and over again? And does the disabled reporter even want to be the victim?

*If* Trump as president is a disaster, then it's not because he won, but because he was considered for the election in the first place. America should have stopped it right there and then.

I'm sorry but you're wrong again. It's not true that "Trump got the biggest percentage of votes", Hillary Clinton did.

Trump has attacked foreigners, in particular Mexicans and Arabs, so it's entirely appropriate for Ms Streep to challenge his view at an event hosted by foreign media. She never mentioned Trump by name, she made a general points against hateful rhetoric.

The reason why it's important to highlight Trump's mocking of disability is because he has never apologised for it and he is normalising that appalling behaviour. That can't be allowed not to be challenged. However, that's how America chose to be represented but it's right that Trump's hate agenda should continue to be challenged.

They were all aware of the electoral system. It's the American way, it's how they do it. The results could have been the complete reverse, would it have been unfair in that case?
He's not even your president, get over it.

More people voted for Hillary Clinton than voted for any presidential candidate in American history. Plus, she received nearly 3 million votes more than Trump.

Yes, the electoral college -- which has always existed to undermine the popular vote -- gave the presidency to Trump anyway (Trump had previously decried the electoral college system until it gave him the White House and "suddenly, I see its brilliance!"). And the fact that he's a thin-skinned clod who demands he be praised 24 /7 and can't avoid tweeting an angry retort when SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE makes fun of him (they've been making fun of presidents for 42 years ever since Gerald Ford) is like acid on a wound to some folks.

He won the electoral college because of three swing states where he achieved a razor-thin victory due to white working class voters who will be his and the Republicans' biggest victims but who admired Trump's swaggering, bigoted, asshole narcissism so much that they were willing to be destroyed once and for all by him.

It's kinda sweet, really.

What Meryl Streep said was completely reasonable (although she should have edited out the mixed martial arts reference) but she doubtless knew it would elicit precisely the response it did, her attempt to point out that Hollywood is occupied by many people of many background ignored by Trump who just repeated his "media elite" crap that Billy Joe BabyBackRibDude swallows whole, the irony so ironic it wasn't even.

Worse, both houses of Congress are going Republican now. So this is the first time since 1928 that the White House, the Senate and the House or Representatives have all three been in Republican control. And we all know how the '20s ended... And the first thing the new Congress decided to do was to eliminate the ethics board (public outcry and even Trump himself put a stop, kind of, to that).

Maybe Meryl can act like 2016 never happened. She's pretty good, y'know.

Today it's Meryl Streep, tomorrow it's someone else. But it's not like he's behaved like a true gentleman during the election campaign (or even before that).
Trump is very what-you-see-is-what-you-get. And yet he'll be the next president, but not because he has voodoo'd his way into the White House.
voters who will be his and the Republicans' biggest victims
Still, a lot of people, I think.
