Good to see that little theme song. I think it's decent enough considering how short todays themes are unless you're a cable show.
We sort of know Cristal's secret? She stole money to escape Caraca, left her sister behind to rot while supposedly taking Sammy Jo with her.

This is getting good, it's starting to become its own thing. I appreciate the references to the original series including the theme and the use of character names (Ellen and Iris) but the plotting is heading in a different direction - and I'm glad it is. I'm starting to like Cristal/Celia much more now, she's the character who is most different from the original and I think that's a good thing - better than becoming a Stepford wife. Fallon and Michael are the other characters I find most interesting. Grant Show's Blake is much less of a presence than John Forsythe was in the original at this point - though I realize the producers' intent is to focus more on the Fallon/Cristal rivalry - I would like him to come on a little more strongly. I hope that he goes back to being an asshole once he gets over the shock from being assaulted. The set looks damn good to me, hardly what I would expect from a CW series. In the pilot there were shots of an x-shaped nouveau riche abomination of a house but the past two episodes have featured a classic five-part Georgian style house which is a vast improvement and much more suited to Blake Carrington.

Well, three episodes in (and 9 minutes into the episode) we actually get a theme. It is and isn't the old theme. Like, the pattern is there but the tempo borders on hysterical. Pretty much also like the show. FYI, TNT Dallas had the actual theme.
Jeff Colby has a thing for Fallon and is upset when he sees that she has an affair--going on for four years as Steven informs us--with Michael. Anders, who is looking more and more like a vampire, is watching Cristal like a hawk, whose secret is either that she escaped from Caracas like @tommie said or, worse, that she eats Venezuelan street food. Another secret is that Blake stole Matthew's phone, which was in turn stolen when Sammy Jo set up a fake burglary to find money to pay for his mother's life (though Iris looked so plain I'd cut my losses). The 80s gala passed without any actual 80s moment being recreated--nice going, nuDYNASTY. There is some misunderstanding between Steven and Blake that ended up a love fest in the end--in fact, there is hardly any real, ongoing tension in the family except the one between Cristal and Fallon and also Anders and Cristal. The Fallon/Blake rivalry over the name also ends in a love fest. Overall, the show is sliding into boring territory for me, and unless they bring an amazing Alexis (what are the chances?), I will take it off my Netflix list. Oh yeah, Matthew's phone could destroy the Carrington family. Why? Because Blake said so in the last scene.

So somehwat disappointed in these three episodes in, but kind of happy that we have a theme now- though the opening credits are nearly identical to the cheese you get from the opening of Young and the Restless.
Fallon sitting on top of Michael bobbing her huge 80s hair as the opening scene was a throwback to SJP and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. But it wasn’t fun. She looked ridiculous.
I was thoroughly turned off and disappointed that I hit Off and went back to work emails before the end. Where is Claudia? Sammy Jo doesn’t come off half as trashy as Heather Locklear did. And as Grant Jennings mentioned above, Blake does seem to disappear. I think something needs to happen quick. Gordon Thomson once said that the show would have been a big cat fight if he hadn’t come in when he did. I’m guessing that’s what this is heading for.
The Carringtons first and foremost were a family. I don’t see family so far. I don’t see opulence and outrageous wealth like the original. Fallon shouting to the cocktail server, “you’re fired” was so out of character and just mean and rather childish. I didn’t care for that.
I’m all over the place so I’ll wrap up: why the continued mention on Alexis? The whole point was that she came on as a surprise and there was one (maybe) reference to her prior to her arrival. When we saw her we gasped. Now, we’re juat waiting for her to show up and save this.
Finally, though I didn’t see the end, it looks like Cristal and Venezuela something? Sounds like a throwback to Alexis ditching Cassie when a crime broke out and leaving her to rot in prison in Caracas. I like that a lot!

There's not anyone much to "like" on nuDYNASTY, just as I'd feared. Except for maybe Steven -- I still say his casting is a bit throwback retro, but he's sympathetic and a bit vulnerable. Cristol is now apparently Cookie Lyon. The chauffeur gets some sympathy for being handsome, candid and the victim of Fallon's sexual harassment.
Otherwise, it's roughly the modern slick-but-soulless product I'm sure most of us expected.
The only reason I'm tuning in is to see how they rework the original's early plot elements. Kind of like watching "The Vintage Years" unaired pilot to see all FALCON CREST's storylines from Season 1 shoe-horned into a single episode. But, sort of, in reverse.
I'll keep watching until I stop.
Otherwise, it's roughly the modern slick-but-soulless product I'm sure most of us expected.

On the plus side, we had a bit of character development this week, as we saw some of Cristal's background as well as the dynamics of her relationship with Sammy Joe. Blake's relationship with his kids was also developed a bit. As was Stephen and Sam's relationship and hints of Stephen and Michael's friendship. So hurrah for character development all around.
On the minus side, I don't really care anymore. This has gone from "I'll hang in there and see what it's like when Alexis shows up" to "I won't watch again until Alexis shows up, at which point I'll read episode synopses to get me up to speed with the episodes I missed". I'm just not finding it that interesting. I recall watching season one of Empire and found the early episodes so exciting in terms of the writing and the performances. As I said last week, I'm finding Dynasty just a bit too pedestrian.

So much about this episode I really didn't like. Worst episode so far I think. Steven was all kinds of annoying and the whole thing felt really tweeny and childish. That '80s party was tragic. Was it organised by people who'd never seen the '80s? There were like what? 20 extras in the house in bad outfits and throwing some blue and pink neon lights on the set didn't set a tone or make it feel special. That was an awful way to film that set. It made it look tiny. They should have just filmed the party scene with the house brightly lit, but showing it's night time outside. They should have had loads and loads of flowers all over the set too, twinkling champagne glasses and food porn shots of the buffet laden with all kinds of high end food bling. Then as the house is mostly white everyone's loud 80s outfits would have popped more. The guests looked like extras, all 6 of them! It was really apparent this episode that the budget just isn't there. There is no feeling of opulence here on this Dynasty. Saying you are spending 10 million dollars on a necklace when it all looks and feels so basic. No...

Never put Fallon's hair up again! It was awful, or if they are going to do it again make it bigger on top, especially for an 80s party. I'm not really interested in seeing Cristal torment us with all her Kate from Lost type flashbacks for an eternity where we have no real clue what she's up to. It's so done to death already. That girl on the run with a mystery thing. Bla....
I hated mostly everything here. Except that they switched the exterior of the mansion to a much more tasteful house. It looks grand and opulent and the grounds and gardens are so pretty and feel a bit more old money. I also loved that interior set but they all but murdered it and filmed it in the ugliest way possible here.

The way they lit the set for the party scenes made it look just like what it is - a set. It looked so barren. Particularly when Fallon and Cristal were descending the stairs.
The party was pretty tragic. I know they're on a CW budget but even the house parties in someone's kitchen on One Tree Hill used to look busier than this one did. And as for that necklace that they were auctioning! It looks like something the prop department bought in from Claire's. On the subject of accessories, who buys someone a present for Guy Fawkes? I know we're living by rich people rules on this show but could they not have come up with a better way to shoehorn in a hint that Alexis may be British?

Cristal should have worn the gold dress we see her trying on. Fallon should have worn the same dress but in red! It would have been a sort of throw back to original Krystal and Fallon. And yet a tribute to Alexis and Krystle in the same dress. Yes that necklace was awful too and if you are doing jewellery on Dynasty it has to match, it has to be a suite. The earrings on both ladies looked like drag queen cast offs. I also laughed at Guy Fawkes. Couldn't they have just said the cufflinks Alexis bought you on your trip to London?

It looks like the writers are having a ball with the references to OldDynasty.
"Make sure there's plenty of Ostatrova" - the kind of caviar Dominique never ate. Incidentally, it should be Osetrova, but since Dynasty had its own Moldavia, why not its own caviar?
So, apparently they've watched the show. OK, I get it now.
Personally, I prefer a "mistake", like the Cattle Baron's Ball, because, you know, "she didn't even watch Dallas!"
But it felt like Dallas, and that's more important than churning out all kinds of trivia.
I'm particularly interested in Blake and Jeff's falling-out, but it could have a little more "meat". Obviously Blake feels betrayed, but I want him to feel very betrayed, if they want me to buy into that feud. The push & punch looked whimsical, just one collective gasp from the other guests and that was it. Where is that Carrington hatred, and the violence?
"Get out of my house!". He said it again. And that has to be the funniest (but probably unintentional) reference to OldDynasty, because Blake and Alexis said it all the time.
Loved Cristal's big curly hairdo, she should keep it that way.
I actually liked the father/children "love fest" scenes, I don't think it looked very sappy and for a few moments they didn't act like a bunch of strangers living in the same house.
"All I need is my Carrington blood to conquer the world". And that's how you put the Carrington name back on the map. One of her better scenes imo, she's too loud and hyper most of the times.
The 80s party soundtrack was a bit random, they could have played with that to emphasize...something. My choice would have been "Relax" by FGTH.
Or the SINS intro song "It's Hard To Be Tender" by Carly Simon.

This episode seemed a bit flat, too neat at the end, the robbery was blatantly set up by Sam Jo.
I'm liking Michael Culhane, he's not just a one dimensional character, he's actually becoming one of my favourites, he's not just Fallon's stud muffin, he's got shades of Miles Colby, another composite? Makes sense if Fallon is going to be in a love triangle and since neither Jeff nor Monique have mentioned Miles so far.
The 80s party should've been more....80s, not the 10s doing an 80s theme from a 00s perspective, after all the 80s is still a very recent time in history, but this this a 40 minute show so only so.much could be done.

Thanks for the tributes to the old series, so much for nostalgia. The infamous necklace of season 1: another nod to the original. BUT Spelling's jewelry didn't look like plastic.
And NOW I wish we had a strong storyline, plots, something, instead of the weekly quota of bitchy lines and the name of Alexis popping every 3 sentences (I hope she'll "enter" before cancellation...) It's quite flat and predictable and cliché...

I'm clearly in a minority but I kind of like this show. It's not Dynasty as we know it but I think that's a good thing. Had they done a continuation or a faithful copy of the original, it would have been even more prone to comparison with the original and likely to fall short of being as good as it was. That said, it's not compelling viewing, just a pleasant way to pass forty-odd minutes.
