Well, I will admit that you did a good job of showing that Katherine does have a serious problem. It's better than just making her a total b**** like I've seen in so many other stories. This was more in character. I was a bit put off by Bobby hitting a woman, though. Every time Katherine gets hit in a fanfic, I feel like it's some attempt at fan service for readers. In my opinion, the reason why Katherine would probably never be able to get better at this point is because no one ever tried to help her or even asked to hear her side of things in the show. I always thought that Bobby and JR were total asses to Katherine even before she shot Bobby. Bobby just used her for her money, and when he found out that she had slept with JR, he just labelled her as being sick. Bobby was totally stupid to just assume that Katherine should be able to just magically love her half-siblings without really knowing them. Getting used to blended families is not that simple. Especially when they have everything you have wanted, which can just make you feel jealous like Katherine. And JR pretty much raped Katherine and expected her to sell him some oil fields. He made it clear with his words and actions that he was telling her that she was only good for sex and money. Not good for a woman's self-esteem in my opinion. I apologize for my little rant there and if I sound judgmental. I just hate how 99% of any fanfiction I've read with Katherine in it is usually just about her keeping Pam locked away, killing people, being obsessed with Bobby, or being a horrible mother. Or usually, all of that put together. But in the authors' defense, they probably don't know what else to do with her based on what they have to work with.
Thank you so much for your through explanation. I totally see your point. For me it was more about using the character to explain the awful mess the writers did with 1) the dream season, 2) Pamela's disappearance because by then they were to scared to just kill a main character and 3) crazy Cliff because the new Dallas didn't know the old Dallas. So it fit justvto name her crazy and being used by another unseen group of people. I agree with you on Bobby and I'm guilty here if going with the new Dallas version of Bobby. And I hated that Bobby. So here is a rewrite that I should have done that is Bobby Ewing:
Bobby meets with Katherine Wentworth in a plush and gilded room. She begs him, "Please Bobby you can't let them have me. Please. I love you."
"You did all these for love? You're sick Katherine."
"They stole everything from me don't you understand? Wentworth Industries was mine. He was my father. He wanted me to run the business. And they were his friends. I was helping them. They were helping me. Please Bobby listen to me."
"I don't even know why I'm here, to be honest."
"Because you love me. Because I did everything my father wanted me to do. Because I'm right Bobby."
"Right? Katherine."
"Please Bobby. I took care of Pam. They wanted to just kill her. They killed my mother. My father should have known better then to just leave everything."
"Why did he?"
"He thought I couldn't handle it. He thought I wasn't capable. But look it Bobby. He was wrong. These friends oh his, I made deals with them. I controlled Wentworth Industries and technologies they wanted. And Pam's fine. She's happy and safe. And Cliff was always an idiot. He would have lost everything if I hadn't of intervened. He didn't even know it was me who was building Barnes Global behind his stupid back. Then he gave away my share to Pamela. He was trying to take the company from me. And my daddy's friends wanted Chris's technology. Bobby they were going to take everything from us. They were going to kill everyone one of you. I saved you."
"So now you're our savior. Your sick Katherine."
"No! They stole from me. They ruined everything. And they get everything. No! It's not fare!" Katherine is hesterical by this point.
"So you druged your own family because you didn't want to share?"
"They're not my family. These people were my family, my dad's associates. And when he died she tried to double cross them and they killed her."
"They killed Rebecca?"
"Yes. So you see Bobby I didn't have any choice. I had to."
"You had to take Pam away from me? You had to push Cliff and then watch him rot in a Mexican prison? You'd have never come clean. If not for JR putting me on your trail you'd still be living the high life in Europe with Pam so drugged she'd have no idea what was going on. Your sick Katherine. I don't even know what to do with you."
"This is because I shot you isn't it? Your whole family hates me because I lost it just a bit and shot you. Let me talk to your mother. I'll explain."
"My mother died some time ago."
"Let me talk to Gary and Ray."
"And explain what? After the hell you put them through. Put me through. Put Chris through."
Katherine stiffens up. "What about my hell Bobby?"
"I don't care about what happens to you Katherine. Take what you've got coming."
"Then I'm glad. You might have Pam back, but I killed Christopher. That's right Bobby. I killed him."
"What are you talking about?"
"The explosion in the car. My friends wanted it. They wanted his methane extraction process and I wanted Pam's son dead. So we're both happy and you can live with me taking away from you everything. You've got nothing now and Pam's a waisted shell. A fragil and weak ghost of a person that they'll probably kill."
Bobby looks over Katherine and studies her. He then holds her. "It's alright Katherine. It's alright." Petting her hair he says, "JR figured out a deal to keep those people away from you. It's done."
"You love me Bobby," she cries.
"I love you Katherine. It'll be OK. You're safe. I've got an island in the South Pacific where we're going to go. Just some place where we can all rest."
"I love you Bobby."
"I know you do. I want you to promise me you'll listen to the doctors. Do everything they say."
"I promise you Bobby. I will. Everything. Just don't leave me. I'm so scared. Please don't leave me."
"I won't Katherine."
"I love you Bobby."
"I know you do."
Katherine looks happier than she's e we looked as Bobby looks more exhausted than he's ever looked.
And back to the Oil Barons Ball:
