Telly Talk Star
Autum 2012 . . .
JR, Gary and Bobby stand by Miss Ellie's grave site, fresh soil and a new stone. Ray steps up next to Bobby. No one says anything. Sue Ellen steps up next to JR. There are headstones for Clayton and Miss Ellie's parents and her brother. A tree overhead shades them from the hot Texas son. Lucy steps up next to Gary.
Away from them a very large crowd of people make their way to a line up of cars.
A television news reporter states, "Eleanor Ewing Farlow, Miss Ellie to the people of Texas, died as she lived, giving to the people around her. She had set up the Ewing Family Foundation some years ago to protect the land of her family's South Fork Ranch and to give generously to numerous causes around Dallas. She set up the foundation with the single largest block of shares in the CalcoHarwood Corporation. Her second husband, the late Clayton Farlow was one of West Star's largest shareholders before the company was merged with CalcoHarwood as arranged by her eldest son and West Star Chairman, the legendary oilman JR Ewing. The board of the Ewing Family Foundation is comprised of her sons Gary and Bobby Ewing as well as her x-daughter-in-law, Sue Ellen Ewing, who serves as the foundation's President. Miss Ellie's final act of generosity was to leave the mineral rights of South Fork to the foundation. Some have estimated those mineral right alone to be worth well over ten billion dollars.
Her grandson, John Ross Ewing the third, has announced his company, oil field services giant Ewing Oil, will begin slant drilling from the neighboring McKay Ranch as well as construct a new pipeline to a CalcoHarwood refinery in keeping with Miss Ellie's wishes to leave the land unharmed. Another grandson, Christopher Shepard, who is the Chairman and CEO of CalcoHarwood, owns the McKay Ranch.
Sue Ewing announced the foundation has already begun plans to give away over the next ten years."
Bobby walks up from the cottage out back at South Fork to find Sue Ellen sitting by the pool. He says, "I never thought when momma left me the ranch I'd ever see her give the mineral rights away."
"It's the right thing to do, instead of leaving all that oil underground."
"I suppose so." Bobby sits down next to her.
"Gary and Val get off alright?"
"Yeah. They're probably already halfway to California by now. Ray's staying with Lucas at the Wade Ranch before heading back in the morning.
"JR's probably already back on that ship of his."
"Probably." Bobby sighs heavy, "And everything does back to normal."
"It'll never be normal again around here Bobby."
"I'm glad to see moved in here to help John Ross with Ross and momma."
"Of course. I enjoy watching my grandson grown up. And it meant a lot to me to be here for Miss Ellie when she needed me. I'm glad she left the house to John Ross."
"I am too. And I'm glad we sold him Ewing Oil. He's done a good job. People tell me he reminds them of my daddy. He was even out there helpin' with that brush fire a few weeks back. You've raised a hell of a man."
"Thank you. And thank you for all the times you've been there for him."
"Of course. He's like a son to me."
"You OK Bobby?"
"You mean Christopher? Ever since he ganged up with Cliff to oust JR from CalcoHarwood, I don't think we've spoke two words. You know JR told me as mad as he was at him, he was a bit proud too."
"JR would be."
"I been thinking of Pam a lot lately. I just wish . . ."
"It's ok Bobby."
"I think sometimes things with Chris would be different if she had been around."
"I'm sure they would have."
"I still can't believe she just turned over her third of Barnes Holdings to Chris and he . . . Well, JR's settled with it anyway. Chris has made him a lot of money and John Ross has both the house and company, JR never really did care about the land or the ranch. And he's got his JRE Enterprises to keep him occupied."
"I'm just glad he didn't go fighting to get back control of CalcoHarwood."
"So am I." Sue Ellen stands. "Come on Bobby let's go inside. It's almost six and you wouldn't want to be late for dinner would ya?"
"What'd Helena make?"
"She said John Ross's favorite."
"Pot roast again," Bobby complains while standing up.
Sue Ellen and Bobby walk into Miss Ellie's living room to find a smiling JR offering them a drink. "Bourbon right Bob. And a soft one for you darlin'"
"What are you doing here?" Bobby asks.
"Well Bob," JR says handing him and Sue Ellen their drinks, "I got to think'n, why am I gonna leave? I mean we're family to consider." The door bell rings. JR excuses himself. He returns with a beautiful young Hispanic woman and says, "I invited Amy Anderson to diner. You'all remember Punk and Mavis Anderson's granddaughter. Amy this is my brother Bobby and my wife Sue Ellen."
"X-wife," Sue Ellen corrects him.
"Amy here's Marv's little girl. He married Johanna, Carlos Haddad's daughter. You remember my friend Carlos. Well what can I get ya to drink Miss Amy?"
"Gin and Dubonnet, please."
"Of course. Comin' right up."
John Ross and a ten year old boy enter the room next.
JR speaks up, "Well here they are. Amy this is my boy. I told you all about him. John Ross, this is an old family friend, Amy Anderson. And Amy this is my grandson, John Ross Ewing the forth."
Amy greets both of them, seeming to pay particular attention to Ross. "I hear you love horses."
"Yes ma'am."
"I do too. I've spent my whole life riding."
John Ross asks, "What are you still doing here?"
JR makes him a drink. "Well I got to thinkin', I got a lot of work to do to put this family back together. You need a good wife and that boy needs a mother."
"He's got a mother."
"That Barnes girls? Hell, a cat makes a better mother. And your cousins, we got to get Chris and Lucas back around here. We're family. We're Ewing's." He hands John Ross a drink and whispers, "And about time your momma and I were livin' under the same roof again. And I got this girl for your Uncle Bobby. Wait 'till you meet her." He then announce to the room, "Well jets head on in." He takes Amy's arm, "Helena's one terrific cook. Her aunt, Teresa use to work for my mother. There family's been part of South Fork for over a hundred years."
In the dinning room JR says, "Now John Ross sits where my daddy use to sit. And here Amy. Why don't you sit next to him? You young people probably have more to talk about. And Bob you sit here. And Sue Ellen right there next to Amy. And Ross you sit between your grandpa and Uncle Bobby. I'm gonna sit in my momma's chair. There we go. Now Sue Ellen darlin' make sure you talk our boy up. Tell her about the time John Ross was wildcatting up in the Dakotas doin' that frackin' they do to get at oil we never even dreamed about in our day, ha Bob. And, that oil rig explosion. They say he saved seven people." JR laughs as Helena brings in the pot roast.

High up on the top floor of the CalcoHarwood building in Dallas the board of directors of the company gathers. JR is over joyed to see Jeremy Wendell's son Jared and asks him about dating his x-daughter-in-law. "Well it must be difficult. After all that woman's s career gal and she don't have time much for son, let alone a boyfriend." He then meets up with Chris. He hugs him and says, "Well if it ain't my long lost nephew. I know I've been gone a while, but I've heard some good things about you. Heard you bankrupted old McKay. Now I'm just waiting to hear what you do with Wendell's boy here." JR pats him on the shoulder. Should be interesting to watch." He then sees Pamela, "Well I'll be damned. I heard your daddy stepped down and you took his place but I just didn't believe that old termite actually retired. You runnin' Barnes Holdings on your own too, I hear."
"That's right JR. I am. What brings you back to Dallas after all this time?"
"Well darlin' my family needs me. My boys been alone too long. I got to find him a decent girl. One with a pedigree. I can't trust him on his own when it comes to findin' a good woman. And Chris here. Well he's strayed a long ways from home. I promised my momma on her death bed I'd fix things with my brother Bobby and his boys. And well my grandson, you remember little Jack don't ya? Well he ain't so little anymore. He's growin' up fast."
John Ross works an oil rig on the McKay ranch with a bunch of riggers when a gusher comes in and they race to cap it. He grabs a hold of a young man and hugs him. "You didn't it Bo. You did it. How's it feel to bring up your first play?"
"Pretty damned exciting brother!"
"Glad I could be here for it. They'll get this capped and than we'll celebrate."
"It's a deal!"
A few hours later John Ross and Beau sit up at a bar in a dive of a place. They toast with their crew. John Ross says, "Here's to the Bo Ewing Company's first strike. And to many more." There's toasting and a ruckus to follow. A beautiful young girl comes up to flirt with John Ross. John Ross says, "Bo this is an old friend of the family's, Jessica Lee. She's Jordan Lee's granddaughter. Ask my momma about the Lee's, she'll tell ya all about them. Jessica this is my brother Bo Ewing. He's been working a play that just came in."
"I heard. Everybody's heard. They're saying there's more oil down there than anyone thought."
"Apparently."
Few hours later Bo and Jessica and stripping naked in a hotel room going at it fast and ferocious.
At South Fork, back in the living room JR makes up a drink as Bobby comes in from the back. JR hands him a drink. "Another hard day shuffling around cow pies?"
"Something like that JR."
"I saw you walking up to your little cottage out back pretty filthy. Reminded me why momma expected us to dress for dinner. Say why you stay'n out back anyway?"
"When momma came home, after Clayton passed away, and then John Ross moved in with Pamela, I just thought he needed to be here with just his family, you know after Ross was born. They were talking about havin' several kids."
"Yea don't remind me."
"He loves her you know. Despite what you want. Shame the two of 'em couldn't make it work. Neither one ever believed the other loved 'em. Shame really."
"Shame is that boy ain't done a lick of work since Ross was born."
"What do you mean? He's been working with Bo on the drillin' South Fork. Ain't that enough for ya? He helps me out with the ranch most times. Meets with the people he's got working for him here. Just because he doesn't go into the office everyday doesn't mean he's not working. And he spends a lot of time with his son. A lot more than me or you ever did."
"Letting hired hands running Ewing Oil. That's a problem Bob. You can't stay on top the oil business hangin' around the house."
"You've run you investments from a ship for years."
"That's different. I'm talking about the day to day of a business. Like CalcoHarwood. You can't phone that in."
"Lay off the boy."
"I've got a meeting in Manam I'm leaving for in the morning. I've got something big I'm setting up."
"OK."
"I get John Ross behind this we'll double the size of Ewing Oil."
"Have you talked to John Ross about it?"
"No. I've got a few things to pull together first."
Sue Ellen walks in. "I heard Bo's joining us for dinner and is bring home a girl."
"What girl?" JR asks.
"Helena didn't know."
"He better not be bringing home some tart into this house. That boy and his women. I've got to get him to settle down."
Sue Ellen and Bobby look at each other with disbelief.
The Ewing's walk across the entry into the dinning room, including Bo with Jessica Lee and John Ross with Amy Anderson.
JR grabs Bo's arm, "A Lee? Really?"
"What?"Bo questions and JR let's go of him in disgust. They're the last two into the dinning room.
Pamela sits at her office desk across from Chris late that evening, "I don't care about what went on. You've got the best chance of either of us to get John Ross and Bo to trust him. Once John Ross sells part of Ewing Oil to Bo we need to be there to take it."
Jared turns around at a bar and says, "He's sitting on fracking patents we need. Patents that'll make CalcoHarwood the biggest of the supermajors."
Chris looks at Pamela, "It was your father that lost control of Wentworth Tool and Die when he was arranging to tie everything together."
"Admittedly my father wasn't very good at business, but at least he managed to hold onto most everything while his sisters went god knows where."
"Most isn't enough. Baker Douglas bought Wentworth Tool and Die and several other businesses along the way. Ewing Oil now has a controlling interest in Baker Douglas and we all want it," Chris says.
"I know what we want. I can handle the finance, but you need to get them to trust you."
"I'll get there. I've already got Jessica Lee inside. She's having diner with the family as we speak."
"Good. When we're done we'll have back the last piece of our grandmother's estate that our parents lost, along with Ewing Oil and their precious South Fork."
John Ross meets late at night out by the barn with a man who says, "They're not getting back Wentworth Tool and Die. If we have to, we'll get rid of them the same way we did Rebecca Wentworth."
