How do you explain Sammie Jo's appearance, though? As we've discussed before, Kirby could easily give biracial. Heather, on the other hand, gives potential octoroon at best.

Agreed. While I can understand the appeal of having Brady replace Daniel Reece's character entirely, I don't think Heather Locklear's appearance could be excused if she were to play a half-black woman. Kathleen Beller could get away with it, since she had the "racially ambiguous" thing going on (I think she mainly looked Hispanic, but other times she looked Chinese/Japanese, or Indian, or Native American)... plus, as I've pointed out many times, Beller's facial structure was *very* similar to Diahann Carroll's. So I don't think there would have been too much complaint about that. But Heather... yeah. You can only suspend the imagination so far.
