I am an American, so I realize I don't "get" the monarchy.

But to me, they spent multiple episodes showing us their privilege and whining because they didn't have enough privilege.

And to be shocked that the royal family was racist? REALLY? I mean, REALLY??? Felt like the racism was a-okay with them until it directly affected them.

I'm British and I don't get the monarchy either and it's a growing opinion in the UK.

The toxic effect the Royal Family has on society is exemplified by the normally reasonable people who usually would abhor and call out racism but feel it is necessary to downplay or excuse the bigotry in the Royal household in order to protect the institution.

I guess that's the part I don't "get." Why protect the institution at all? I'm sure the Royal family has it's uses, but for the life of me I can't figure out what they are.

As for racism by the Royal family, they have a VERY well documented history of racism, so not sure why Harry we would so shocked how they treated his wife.

I am surprised how the British press has sided with the Royal Family though.

What he said about his mother's death really resonated with me. I lost my father when I was 7 and some of the things he said were the same for me. When he said he couldn't remember anything about his mother before she died that was exactly how it was for me and I never previously heard anyone else say that. I think the grief he had, and still has, is very real and very strong and as you go through the book you will see just how much it has shaped so much of his life and views.
I'm sorry to hear you lost your father at such a young age.:hugs:
I think it must have been a traumatic experience to forget them. I moved when I was 7 years old and I have a lot of childhood memories from the first house I lived in.

Thank you.

I have great memories of my childhood but almost entirely from age 7 onwards. Anything before that date I only know from what others have told me. So for me it was really interesting to hear Harry say something similar about his memories before and after Diana died.

What amazes me is that in the countries that have abolished the monarchy, the interest in the British royal family is great. Yesterday King Charles began a three day visit to my home country of Germany. His arrival was reported live for more than two hours and 1.34 million viewers watched. That was an increase of 30 percent compared to the (in danger of cancellation) soaps that otherwise air at that time on the channel. Charles even took away half a million viewers from the afternoon's no. 1 timeslot show. If you add up all broadcasting stations, over 2 million viewers wanted to see Charles' arrival.

Harry's book was the top German bestseller for almost two months. Germans have little interest in German aristocrats, there are no live broadcasts of weddings and funerals, only recaps in celebrity magazines but no reports of them in the evening news. When Harry's book came out, it was even featured in the evening news. However, this book release was not sold as gossip on any serious news program, but rather explored as to whether Harry's behavior posed a threat to the British monarchy and whether we were witnessing the beginning of the end.

When you don't have to pay for something it's easier to enjoy than if it was funded out of your own pocket. The British Royal Family are little more than celebrities, like the Kardashians, the only difference is that the Kardashians don't demand that their lavish lifestyle is funded by taxpayers. I think if the German aristocracy demanded they should be funded by taxpayers, I can't imagine the people of the country tolerating that.

Lots of comments about how much money Harry and Meghan make but what do they spend it on? Recently they published their tax returns for their Archewell Foundation. This is where they spend the money they make:

$300,000 was given to World Central Kitchen to develop 4 community relief centres
$250,000 to Harvard to expand its fellowship program
$250,000 to Rockefeller Philanthropy for Afghan evacuation
$250,000 to Team Rubicon to support families evacuating from Afghanistan
$250,000 to UCLA Foundation for fellowship & research at the Centre for Critical Internet Inquiry
$250,000 to National Women's Law Centre for support and study into impact of the pandemic on women

They also provided funds to the following organisations to support adolescent girls, provide therapy for women of colour and support women journalists: Girl Inc, Girls Who Code, Paid Leave, The 19th News, The Loveland Foundation and Women for Afghanistan

Other organizations to receive grants from Harry and Meghan include Georgetown & Stanford University for funding for research, Team Unity for Covid community response and A twist of Greatness, a new Charity supporting young black girls.

Meanwhile, this is how Kate and Willie are spending the money we make (i.e. how they fleece tax payers):

Not sure if anything will come of this but I would love to see Meghan have to testify under oath. Could she rival Amber as most manipulative bad actress??

The media were salivating over Samantha Markle's attempt to sue Meghan even though it was clear it had no basis. The case was thrown out at the first stage.

This is where they spend the money they make:
Are we reading the same Tax File Return? It's been reported during the year 2021, Archewell raised in total $13,005,660. Of this two wealthy philanthropists donated $13 million with one of those donating $10 million, while a paltry $4,470 was donated by the public. The foundation did dole out $3,096,319 in grants.

Of course this has now raised suspicion who were those two philanthropists as this information is not made public. My question Angela is did Harry and Meghan really spend money they made? Sounds to me like Harry and Meghan are doing exactly what the Royal family is doing: spending other peoples money.

There's a difference though. If someone makes a donation to a charity that's their choice, if someone's money is taken from them in taxes to fund the Royal Family, they have no choice in that.

I seriously wonder how much financial relief there will be once the monarchy is abolished. I have a feeling they're going to take your money anyway because if it's not one thing it's another.
Will that money be spent better? From a very optimistic standpoint I'd give it a "maybe". Usually, if a government fails it fails, regardless of royal families. After all, for many years the west and northern European countries have been considered relatively prosperous. Has that been destroyed by the monarchy?

I guess the only issue that matters is: do you think the monarchy has enough cultural significance? Do you like your country to be a kingdom, an EMPIRE? You can't fake that with a dollhouse and miniature Rolls Royces. Sooner or later the Americans are going to find out.

If we became a true democracy and abolished the monarchy, the vast sums of money we spend on them would just be absorbed into general spending and it probably wouldn't be noticed to any great extent. However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't do it. I think it's obscene that over 4 million children in the UK are living in poverty and instead of feeding them we are giving hundreds of millions to fund the lavish lifestyle of some of the richest people in the country. So here's my idea, abolish the monarchy and give the hundreds of millions that we spend on them to feed the poor.

I'm not sure what the cultural significance of the monarchy is. For me, they represent class, privilege and the inequality that exists in our country. Historically, they represent our past links to empire, colonialism and slavery. If that is their cultural significance, then I think it's time to move on from that.

This is what's known as trailer trash.
Except in this case that trash would also have been rented; just like the the property in which Meghan floats about the vegetable garden. They couldn't even film this at their own property? Were Harry and Meghan worried we'd see crayon on the walls, dirty dishes in the sink, the laundry piling up? Oh spare me. Fake, FAKE, FAKE!

Well the new cooking show explains why Meghan has suddenly resurfaced on "Instagram". :re:
I think it's pretty clear that she'd rather be an actress than a princess. Royal life was not for her and now she's doing her own thing. Good for her.

But does the world really need yet another cooking show?

It's sort of sad that she had a platform where she could do really good things and yet this is what she chooses to do with her celebrity.
I can't say I blame her and Harry for escaping the nasty British tabloid press though. I saw a couple of episodes of the Harry & Meghan documentary on Netflix last year and the press were really horrible to her. Also after what the papparazzis/tabloid press did to Princess Diana I totally understand why Harry wants nothing to do with them and just want to be left alone. :(
