I just finished the first episode of Dallas

What? I thought it was Fallon who killed Roger Grimes! ;)

Ked, I am delighted to see that you have started to watch Dallas and that you seem to be getting into it. It's been interesting to read your reviews. :)

I was surprised you didn't like the pilot though as personally I love that episode. But then again I began watching the show from season 11-14 (DVD) first and then went back and saw how it all began so by then I already loved most of the characters. So that of course affected how I perceived that episode.

My sister began to watch it from the beginning in reruns, almost anyhow, her first episode was actually episode four - Wind of Vengeance. It got her hooked and I agree Linda Gray was awesome in that episode and there's lots more of Sue Ellen to come.

Anyway I'll look forward to read the rest of your reviews as you keep discovering Dallas.

Continue to stick with it Ked. When I recently watched Lorimar Dallas (for the umpteenth time) I still discover moments I've missed before. Sue Ellen discovering she is pregnant with baby John is when Dallas begins its journey to prime-time soap supernova.

Peyton Place had them too, but not always as obvious or extreme as the 80s soaps.

Okay, I did not know that, I have never seen any episode of Peyton Place myself, but I thought that I read somewhere that Dallas was the first series that worked with cliffhangers, but maybe the person how wrote that forgot about Peyton Place.

Season Finale time! The end of season 1. Its like the end of an era... ;)

And going by the intro... ITS BABY TIME! Time for what all great (and bad) soaps are built on. :lol: Poor Sue Ellen, though; I wish she and Pam could be friends...

The episode starts off with Bobby in a hideous pair of shorts. XD

Oh, Southfork has its own basketball hoop and pool, huh? Well, its been winter this season, so we've never had a reason yet to see them...

Wow, there are so many black people around now. ^^ Somehow, the character Tilly has grabbed my attention. Though I doubt she'll be an actual recurring character. This might even be the last we'll see of her. Now I'm thinking about Dominique.

Uh oooh, Pam's dad is coming to the barbecue! Dun dun dunnnn...

Wait, so he called himself "Wart" before he called himself "Digger"? Eh...?

And Jock doesn't want to bury any hatchets: "My house, my barbecue..." He actually managed to make that sound scary! ^^

Pam's so pretty. You're all probably gonna hear me rave about her looks throughout this entire show. :lol: And now she's getting her dad and brothers (she has 2?) dressed up. X)

Digger still hates Jock, too. "Jock had the head, I had the nose." Now I'm going to be staring at Digger's nose. :lol:

"Without my nose, he wouldn't have had nothin'!" Stoppit, Digger! I can't take you seriously! :lol:

Oh, so Digger and Jock were partners, but Jock (allegedly) screwed Digger over and took all the money, and... Miss Ellie and Digger were sweethearts?! I never would have guessed! I'm very much reminded of the Blake/Krystle/Matthew triangle in Dynasty's first season. Like this would have happened when they were all old...

Digger's saying Miss Ellie could be sweet one minute, and come at you with a shotgun the next. I both do and don't believe this. So far Miss Ellie's been sweet, for sure; but its hard to imagine such a frail-seeming woman toting a shotgun... then again, there was that scene last episode where she managed to sound threatening even though she was a captive. So I'll just wait and see if Miss Ellie gets pushed to her limit. :D

Kind've a sweet irony that Digger's daughter should end up with MIss Ellie's son (and I really don't know why I keep referring to her as "Miss"; somehow it just seems wrong to simply call her "Ellie").

Uh oh, Digger's not planning anything, is he?

Heh heh, Pam gives Sue Ellen a sweet hello, and Sue Ellen immediately barks at her, "PLEASE MOVE YOUR CAR!" So Pam pimps that little chore off to Lucy, who gladly takes it - but not before pestering Pam about her daddy. ^^ Oh, that second guy was Pam's cousin then? Cool.

Pam's cousin Jimmy, and Lucy? Hmm... Though Pam says compared to Lucy (who's how old? 16? 17?) then 19-year-old Jimmy is 5. :lol:

JR asks if Pam was shot out of a canon, and yet she didn't seem to walk past him that quickly.

Pam walks in and hears Bobby taking a shower...

....Bobby taking a shower...

...are we at the dream season already? 0_0

Pam's making a call... its the doctor... hah, obviously its about the baby. X) Awww, she's looks so happy! :D And she does what just about every expecting woman does: looks in the mirror at herself sideways, hands on her tummy. What a tiny little waist...

OH! WAIT! She's un-buttoning her dress! 0_0

And underneath that ugly beige dress is a beautiful light blue negligee... certainly an improvement. X) She should wear THAT to the barbecue! ;D

"I don't know the answer to this riddle," she says.
"You're nuts!" and Bobby playfully throws a towel at her.

"What do you get when you cross a Barnes with a Ewing?"
"You never cross a Ewing!"
Oh Bobby, even Pam looks disgusted. XD

Now Bobby looks like he's catching on. X)

"Wow!"
Hah, that's actually a good reaction, Bobby. Aww, and Pam's getting all teary-eyed!

They declare their love for one another... and they promptly start screaming like idiots. Haha, not really. But that was really sweet, the way how he swept her up in his arms. They're such a nice couple, I hope they're like Blake and Krystle, staying true to one another... except something tells me that, during this 14 season run, that may not happen. :(

Sue Ellen's arm-in-arm with the senator and introducing him to Ray, who's got another young blonde.

Pam's wearing a stunning white dress, totally inappropriate for a barbeque, but then again, this doesn't look at all like a typical backyard barbeque! ^^ And she looks great, so let her wear it! XD

Heh, Pam says Lucy looks cute; she looks like she's wearing her grandma's shawl! Though she does look better with her shoulders exposed. And now she's meeting JR's new secretary Susan, a lady with very curly black hair.

Once Lucy finds out it was JR who hired this beautiful woman: "Old JR, he never misses a trick!" and she laughs and walks off while Susan looks confused. I sense she's about to be another one of JR's used ladies...

Speaking of which, I'm looking forward to JR and Sue Ellen having their next scene together. I'm curious if the last episode will be brought up...

GASP! Miss Ellie sees Digger. Gosh, how many years has it been for them?

The way how they look at each other... still filled with so much love. X)

Miss Ellie does look pretty with the wind in her hair.

Ray's dancing with his latest little honey... and Lucy looks like she wants his attention. She calls him over and tells him Pam's having a baby with Bobby.

"Isn't that terrific?" Oh Lucy with that grin that might as well be a snarl, and Ray's hurt, buzzed face...

Lucy, you spiteful little minx. Not that I can blame you all that much. XD

Oh Ray, what DID you expect?

Hah! I love how Tilly and the big black guy (don't know his name) are gossiping about the family as they pour drinks. They're like commentators for a wrestling match and something. They even seem like they're going to place bets on who's going to get drunk first - though it looks like Jock's got the headstart.

Jock's speaking with a drunk slur now... he actually sounds scary. ^^

Oooh, now Jock seems like he's saying that he and Ellie were sweethearts when they were 14 years old. Was Ellie playing the field between the two of them? Is she the one at fault here? And I just realized I referred to her as just "Ellie" twice. Then again, I'm thinking of her when she was a girl, not a grand old lady.

Bobby's now over and telling Jock he's got something to tell him.

Miss Ellie's arm-in-arm with "Willard", aka Digger. I like that shot of them.

Oh, so Southfork belongs to Miss Ellie's family, even before she married Jock? And the way how she talks about the land reminds me of Scarlett's dad from "Gone with the Wind."

Miss Ellie says she has no regrets; she and Jock love each other. :) She still loves Digger, but "I did what I had to do."

"Nobody, but nobody, calls me Willard anymore."

Lucy is laughing with JR's new secretary and Ray's little honey, and Sue Ellen comes over with that phony Stepford grin of hers, "Its wonderful seeing such lovely ladies having fun!" Oh my gosh, Sue Ellen, would you kindly go back to how you were in the last episode?

OOOOOOOOOOOH, Lucy looks like she's gonna tell her! PLEASE TELL HER! Sue Ellen's only interesting when she breaks down! XD

YES! SHE TOLD HER! And oh boy, that face Sue Ellen makes, and how she looks at the secretary and Ray's girl, and how they look (and don't look) at her. I love it. :D

Lucy's shrewish grin...

"I'll go find Pamela." What're you gonna do, Sue Ellen? Put Pam up on a horse and fire a shotgun? 0_0

Nope, she just gives her a peck on the cheek. ^^ Pam doesn't seem to understand when Sue Ellen says she's happy for her. HAH! Oh gosh, and there's Lucy, watching it all and looking pleased as pie. Hahaha.

Awww, poor Sue Ellen. She looks so sad. :( She then gets a drink from the big black guy, Sam (another "Gone with the Wind" reference?), who gives her a look when she gulps it down - and she gives him a look when she snatches a second drink. ^^

Oooooh, just what I was waiting for: "JR, may I see you alone please?"

I can't help but notice that JR can't seem to bring himself to face his wife, while Sue Ellen stares straight at him. ^^ Great detail! :D

Sue Ellen says Bobby and Pam's marriage is nothing like her and JR's, and that's VERY true.

That's right, though, JR. Why on EARTH aren't you interested in such a gorgeous woman like Sue Ellen? Is it her personality? That's often a contributing factor in what truly makes a person attractive or not. If so, why'd you marry her? Because you wanted her as a show-piece? That's always a bad decision, no matter who or what you are in life.

"SHE IS *PREGNANT*, JR!"
Sheesh, Sue Ellen, a little louder, please? I don't think they heard you in Denver. ;)

Oh man. You tell 'im Sue Ellen! Dang...

Heh, going by the music that plays when JR takes off his sunglasses, I would have guessed *he'd* be the one who puts Pam on a horse and fires a shotgun. ^^

Sue Ellen's now on her third drink, looking as bitter and vile and smiley as possible. Hah, I love it! XD

Lucy's ditched the granny-shawl, is now clad in a slinky-ish black dress, and has sat down next to Pam's cousin. Hah, I love how he acts totally disinterested in her.

"What do you do for fun?"
"Masterbate."

...okay, yeah, he didn't actually say that, but for once, I'd love to see that said on a TV show. I really would. Just to see how the reaction would be handled. XD

Heh, Lucy hears the word "pool" and thinks "swimming pool."

WOW, Lucy asked him, "You don't like boys, do you?" I'm a little surprised she would ask that, mostly because I'm so used to Dynasty being associated with acknowledging homosexuality and none of the other soaps doing it. Of course, acknowledging it is really different from having a main character who just so happens to be gay is different.

HA haha, he has no idea what she's talking about. XD I totally love this guy - in that he's completely immune to Lucy's charm, that is. On his own, he seems rather boring, but I love it when guys like him meet girls like Lucy. So much more amusing/entertaining than the usual girl-wraps-guy-around-her-finger-on-first-meeting type of thing.

MAN, this guy's clueless. Is he for real, or is he just letting her down easy? Hmm, judging by his grin after she leaves, it might be the latter...

Bobby and Pam are with Jock, blah blah blah, still haven't told him, JUST TELL HIM!

Heh heh, wow, Sue Ellen is sitting at a table of much older women. Its like a gathering of spinsters, with Sue Ellen about to become their newest member...

Ooh, she is *sloshed*...

Oh Sue Ellen, just have an affair if you're that horny. XD

Heh, the old ladies look so uncomfortable, and yet I bet they're drinking this all in...

"Is Jock Ewing... going to love JR less... because Bobby gave him his first grandson? ....Yes."
And then that smile, that cheerful little giggling SMILE...

"...Because Jock Ewing... loves JR less... to begin with."
*DAMN*, girl! That is coooooooooold...

I already know that Sue Ellen becomes a recurring drunk for the rest of the series, but I can see why the writers did that to her. She is highly amusing drunk. XD In fact, it makes me think of Kirby and how she got drunk right before Adam raped her, and how charming she actually was when she was drunk. Maybe Kirby should have become a drunk like Sue Ellen? Might have made her more popular. ;) :lol:

Awww, now she's all teary-eyed and vulnerable: "I'd like JR to love me more." Awwwww! :(

I was right, these old ladies *ARE* drinking everything in, so far two of them look like greedy little vultures relishing in all this.

Welp! Here we are: Miss Ellie has walked up with Digger; now he and Jock are finally sharing screentime with one another.

"Say it, Bobby!" Well said, Miss Ellie. X)

Wow. Jock and Ellie are positively overjoyed (in fact, I gotta admit, Jock was kind've adorable the way how he said, "A *BABY*!?"), whereas Digger looks... well, less than pleased. ^^

I find it odd that Digger asks Pam if she's happy.

"I reckon its out of style to say so, but I hope its a boy!"
Miss Ellie agrees with Jock - that what he said was out of syle. XD

Jock asks Pam if there's anything they can do. Sure Jock: a trust fund, how about 2 million dollars a year?

Oh! Pam says she wants her child to have two granddaddys in its life. Nice one, Pam.

Jock doesn't look at all pleased. XD

Miss Ellie suggests a handshake.

At least Digger is the first one to say they can try and make a go of it. He holds out his hand.

HAH! That was the quickest handshake I ever saw. Jock couldn't run away fast enough. :lol:

Oh! So Cousin Jimmy really was putting on an act for Lucy, and Pam put him up to it? Is she trying to teach Lucy a lesson, or was she just warning her cousin away from Lucy?

JR's getting drunk too, and rejecting any offers for coffee. XD

Jock and Digger are getting drinks together. Nice. When's the fued gonna start up again? XD

Jock says he's been ready for his grandchild, and Digger says he's got to *get* ready. ^^

Digger objects to spoiling the kid, and Jock says why not? I agree; spoiling the kid is the grandparents' job! Jock argues that as spoiled as Bobby was, he turned out to be "the best of the lot."

Oh bleah, now Digger is accusing Jock of taking his grandson. I mean, I knew this was happening thanks to the preview, but come on, Digger. Course then again, he won't be able to give his grandkid what Jock can, so I can understand the jealousy. But he can offer the kid love and support and wise words - that is, if he has any to offer. ^^

Digger says he isn't the same, that he decided "on that porch" that he was going to forgive Jock.

"Forgive? For what?" Uh oh, that tone...

"For stealing, for cheating, for taking what's mine!"

Uh oh, things are getting heated... X)

Miss Ellie, along with Bobby and Pam, appear on the scene. Ellie tells Jock to leave Digger alone. Jock calls Digger a liar. Pam tells them both to stop.

Jock says its time to hear "the truth" - aka, Jock's side of the story.

Oh, so Digger had a gambling problem? Couldn't be trusted with money? And Digger physically attacked Jock when he found the papers? Jock was *going* to give him half of the money? Sounds juicy. Nice to know there's more to Digger than what we've seen so far. :D

Pam tells Jock to stop.

Jock says Digger tried to kill him. Miss Ellie tells him enough.

Pam sticks up for her father, accusing Jock of taking everything from Digger.

"He's stripped down raw."
Ooh, nice one, Jock.

Huh. Digger says, "He was right. We was just kids."

Is Digger sticking to what he said earlier, that he was going to forgive Jock? Ooh, he also says that Miss Ellie lied to him. ^^ Could the feud between Digger and Jock be fizzling out? I hope so, because I don't want to have to deal with that feud while Bobby and JR start theirs' (because I know that's how its going to end up for the rest of the series).

Uh oh, Digger's chugging down while Pam keeps on telling him they'll go home. Aww. :(

.....oh my freakin' gosh, now Digger's completely drunk and *singing*. With an audience, no less. Ugh, what this must be doing to Pam. :(

He's making an ass of himself.

Heh, Bobby's so mad at Jock now. They get into a big argument, and Jock says, "You don't tell me how to act, this is MY house!" Bobby goes, "FINE," and now I'm wondering if he and Pam will move out. That'd be a twist.

Pam sits her father down, and he keeps calling her "Mrs. Ewing." :(

Oh no, now JR's drunk. And he and Digger are sitting together. Oh man... XD

Huh. Pam has driven up to the hayloft. Instead of calling up, she climbs up. She's found Jimmy with Lucy. Well! ...I guess it worked out between them after all. ^^

DAH HAHAHAHA! Sue Ellen's drunk and riding on a HORSE! Oh wow, I know I kept on referencing a lady riding on a horse, but I was *not* expecting this! XD

Bobby comes out and takes the reigns. Now JR's made the scene.

Sue Ellen cheerfully informs her husband she was about to take off her clothes and be Lady Godiva.

JR's response? "Whoopee!" :lol:

"Would that turn you on, my darlin'?"
"It might."
I think JR might actually be serious. ^^

Bobby helps Sue Ellen off the horse while she says she wants what Pam has. JR's starting a drunk rant.

JR says only one man has "known" Sue Ellen, though she points out that "knowing" requires "observation and frequency, none of which we have." Both of them find this amusing.

JR's intimating that Pam sleeps around and Bobby might not be the father of her child. Bobby's getting a little hot under the collar. ^^

"She's trash, Bobby, just plain trash-"

*BAM*!!!!!

YES! BOBBY PUNCHED JR! YES, YES, YES! The first of many fistfights between these two I hope. :D

HAHAHAHAHA, and Sue Ellen's reaction is to giggle and go, "Its gonna be fuuuuuuun..." Y'know, its almost as if she knew the future of this show's run. :lol:

JR remains face-down in the dirt while Bobby takes Sue Ellen back to the house. Its hightly amusing. X)

HAH! The sound of birds chirping as JR picks himself up...

Pam's looking out of the hayloft window, looking like Rapunzel - if she had short dark hair. X)

A shot of Southfork with its barbecue still going on...

JR drunk-walking... uh oh, he looks up and sees Pam. What's he gonna do now?

I'm surprised he can make it up the ladder. ^^

Oh. First he has to lay down for a moment. Pam remains ignorant of his presence.

Ewwww, the way how he's crawling towards her... I sense a miscarriage...

He's apologizing, saying he goes too far. Pam agrees with him. ^^

Pam says she and Bobby are moving out (called it!) but JR grabs her hands and says they can't do that, it'll break up the family. Uh oh, Pam's backing up, is she gonna fall?

...called it.

...Y'know, as horrible and tragic as this moment is... I can't help but see the comedic side. I feel horrible for saying this, but the way how she fell off, and the sound effect for when she lands... I'M SORRY, BUT... :lmao: I'm a terrible person, but... :lolo: Oh my gosh, I am awful. I really am. :floor:

Huh. Though this is something I never knew that JR had in common with Alexis. However, unlike Alexis, JR was drunk, not fully aware of what he was doing, and this was purely accidental. And what's more, he looks horrified as he stares down at Pam's un-moving body. Alexis, on the other hand, was 100% sober and caused Krystle's miscarriage on purpose. And the look on her face was one of pure cruelty and hatred, and later on, sheer delight.

So, so far, I'd say Alexis is the slightly more evil of the two. Its a shame they never did a crossover.

Its interesting how the show wasted no time in letting you know that Pam lost the baby, how it cuts from JR looking horrified to Bobby standing out on the porch and, without looking at this parents, "We lost the baby." With Krystle, we actually had to wait and see what would happen... and then we had to go through the process of her losing it. :(

Oh! So they did the "We don't know if she'll have children" thing too? Course with Krystle, the doctor's said for sure she wasn't going to have children (and we all know how that turned out ;)), but with Pam, she's being given a chance.

JR's still drunk, and saying he wouldn't hurt Pam. Bobby looks like he might hit him again, but Jock reminds him that JR is still his brother.

Bobby's asking JR why he went to the stable, why he went in - oh come on, Bobby. He's *drunk*, he didn't know what he was doing or saying.

But man, this is really setting up their rivalry for the rest of the series. I'm betting just like with Krystle never forgetting what Alexis cost her, Bobby will never forget what his brother cost him.

I almost feel sorry for JR. Almost.

Awww, poor Pam. She doesn't look nearly as distraught or ragged as Krystle did, but then again, her miscarriage seemed to be quick. Krystle's was dragged out.

Awww: "I love you, Bobby!" Even now... and she started off so happy in this episode... :(

Jock comes in just in time to hear Bobby saying they're moving out as soon as Pam's better.

Of course Jock's gonna convince them to stay.

"I don't want to lose another son."
Oh that's right, Jock had 3 sons!

Pam tells Bobby it was an accident. And she wants to stay. Of course - its in their contracts. ;)

Sue Ellen and JR are standing out on the front lawn.

She asks him if he pushed Pam. He says he didn't.

Ooh, a more important question: "Are you sorry she lost the baby?"

...and he doesn't answer. ^^

Next question, albeit in a softer tone: "Are you coming in?"

"...In a minute."

Another great shot of JR all alone: sitting on the deserted front lawn at night, his wife walking away towards the great big white mansion looming in the background...

~~~~~
Annnnnnnnnd *that* was Season 1, folks! Wow. Pretty good season, I gotta say. A little slow in some parts... in fact, a *lot* of parts. But I'm pretty sure that changes later on. X)
One thing I gotta know: are Sue Ellen and Pam ever going to have a deeper relationship/rivalry/whatever? I'm kind've getting tired of them hardly interacting.
As for the episode itself, it was like the season as a whole: good, but too many slow parts. I did love how three people got drunk and made complete fools of themselves - that whole "they come in threes" kind of deal.
And... not really much else to say. I'm both interested and reluctant in watching Season 2, because I'm getting tired of the "slow '70s pace", but if I just push on... and what could happen to these characters... yeah. I can see why this show got picked up and became popular. :D
@Ked I would highly recommend you start skipping the previews. They really do become very spoilery once you fall in love with the characters and the show becomes fully serialized.
If you really want an answer for Sue Ellen/Pam then read on ------------------------------> Yes, they've got more stuff to do down the line. It's never going to be a main focus but they give them a few fascinating scenes & their relationship does change and evolve.
Will do. I rather dislike how they do it. Btw, are there previews *every* season? Or do they stop doing them eventually?
Well, its not much of a surprise, given how Dallas is always the first Mega Soap you hear about. There was obviously a reason for that. ;)
The first barbecue episodes is one of everybody's favorite installments of DALLAS.
Does anybody not like it??
PS: ...and it feels exactly like early-1978... Hard to explain why.... but it's just like how the library scene between Steven and Blake in the DYNASTY pilot feels exactly like fall of 1980... It just does.
Good to hear. No, starting with Season 11 (DVD), they do Previouslies (this may have changed in later seasons), and there was the occasional episode (like the Season 8 DVD finale) that starts with a Previously.
I can certainly understand that. As spoiler-phobic as I am, I have had moments when I wanted to know small details to look forward to.
And, yet, there are people who don't seem to grasp that. It didn't become the international extreme phenomenon it became for no reason! LOL
Roll on season 2 @Ked, the pace does get a bit faster, and plus you'll see some more characters that will be very relevant later in the series I won't say in case I ruin it for you.
Jock's relationships with Bobby and JR was very strange, i used to think he favoured JR, then Bobby, but now I think he favoured both of them, but in different ways, Bobby because, he did have some scruples, and JR because Jock could rely on him to do the work needed to get ahead, plus the fact that JR worked alongside Jock when he was younger.
But ultimately Jock did favour both of them in different ways
Me too!
@Ked so when are you going to start watching season two?
I am looking forward to find out what you will think about it! ;)
Hopefully soon. I must admit, I'm hesitating a little because I did something really stupid: I looked up what happens to Pam. :( However, that's a long ways off, and since I already decided the new Dallas isn't canon, I get to decide that Pam gets a happy ending after all. X)
I know what you mean Ked. Spoilers like that sucks. Also I began watching the last four years of the show first. So I knew beforehand what would happen to Pam when I watched season 1-10 too. But I still got invested in her character...So Pam definitely get a happy ending, at least in my fanfic that picks up 4 years after the show ended! ;)
So yeah just go ahead and disregard Dallas TNT from the Dallas canon. You are far from the only one to do that. :)
I really do like Pam as a character so far. She seems like a more proactive Krystle, if that makes any sense. While I did love Krystle in the first couple seasons, I always felt that, even then, she was a little too passive for my tastes. Pam seems like she's quicker to take action, and is less of an idealist and more of a pragmatist. :)
TNT Dallas isn't and never WAS Dallas canon to begin with, from the moment they decided the movies won't be canon for them.
So whatever it wants or pretends to be be ... it's not "Dallas".
I kinda hate the clips they show at the beginning of each episode, "previewing" what the episode is going to be about.
I hate those clips too, I always skip them. They totally threw me off when I started watching the first episode for the first time too, like we did not need to see a preview of the first 5 mins 2 mins before we actually saw that scene. Those preview bits make sense in a context of teasing the next episode if you put them at the end of the current episode, but they're just annoying at the beginning of an episode.
Looking forward to reading summaries for the rest of the show. I agree with others who said give it to season 3 before making a decision about whether it's good or bad. Season 2 has some completely boring/pointless episodes, but season 3 is where the show becomes serialised and starts to get really good.
Hello everyone! Sorry for the wait, though you might consider it the typical hiatus that occurs between each season. ;) I must confess, I'm a little intimidated by the second season having 24 episodes, especially if they're all going to be more on the episodic side, but oh well. Must push on!
So, without further ado, here is
Season 2 Episode 1
(And this time, I skipped the "preview" at the beginning; all I saw was Jock as Miss Ellie what was wrong, and she said in a weirdly happy voice, "Nothing!")
I notice in the credits, we still have all the same players from last season, and no newcomers. Kind've odd; I guess I'm used to Dynasty changing its cast almost every season. :lol:
Ahhh, Southfork...
Oh wow, the pool is being used! And its not winter anymore! 0_0 Though I guess in last season's finale it was summer as well, but here it really does feel like summer. ^^
Jock and Ellie sitting on the porch, chugging lemonade (least I think its lemonade). Its kind've weird seeing them be waited on by a waiter like that. Last season I don't think I saw a single maid around the house, or even a butler. Now we've got a waiter in a fancy white jacket serving these casually dressed people who look like they've never employed a servant in their lives! :lol:
Ah. JR and Sue Ellen look much more like the type of people who'd be waited on by a waiter in a white coat, lounging by the pool and going over files... and crossword puzzles. X)
Sue Ellen's wearing a brown one-piece bathing suit... and I think I can somehow see her nipples. ^^ Not that I mind. :lol:
Ooooh, *Pam's* in a bathing suit too! And its *red*. :D Aww, she's all floating in the water, looking like a fallen angel, while Bobby swims nearby...
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAAA! Sue Ellen asks for JR's help for something in her crossword puzzle (something about what floats in water), while JR stares with obvious over-interest at his floating sister-in-law, with her cleavage well in view, and he says, "Buoys." I mean... ahhhhh... :lolo:
I suppose it was only a matter of time before JR's wandering eyes would end up realizing that Pam is more than just "that Barnes girl"... she's also a hot chick. :lol:
Uh ooooooohhhh... Sue Ellen asked what JR said, and JR spells out "buoys" for her, slipping his sunglasses back on, but Sue Ellen has looked up and takes notice of Pam's beauteous figure floating in the water.... and her rather large cleavage....
Sue Ellen knows what her husband was looking at: "Thank you, JR."
Oh Sue Ellen, you poor, poor sap. :laughs:
And of course we have Lucy here, wearing a bathing suit too. And it looks like its pink... is it a bikini? Can't really tell...
Pam and Bobby are having a swimming race. They seem to tie, sort of, have a little splash fight, then hug. They're so cute. X)
Jock calls out, "Not too much Pam!" Ellie says she's alright, the exercise is good for her. Awww... Jock's being sweet, looking out for his daughter-in-law like that, though Ellie has a point too. And she's being encouraging toward Pam as well. Real sweet.
Awww, Bobby lifts Pam up and they share a kiss while they're still in the pool. Cute. X)
Oh! Haha, I thought the music playing was part of the show's soundtrack. Turns out it was just playing on Lucy's radio.
Wow, what a b*tch thing to do, Lucy! Pam says, "I love this song!" and Lucy turns off the radio. Dang, girl, back to being cold, are we?
Jock once again fusses over Pam; she's clearly irritated, but keeps her cool. Aww, her father hasn't talked to her in weeks! :( And aww, she blames Jock for it! :( At least Bobby is defending his dad; I'm on Bobby's side. Digger got himself drunk and made an ass of himself, he's got nobody to blame but himself. And he's the one keeping himself from talking to his daughter, and right when she could use his support the most! I don't like Digger at all right now.
I gotta say though, Pam's cleavage in that bathing suit... X) Ah, and she shows off her nice legs by placing her feet in Bobby's lap... they really knew how to utilize Victoria Principal's beauty, didn't they? :D I wish they had more of this stuff on Dynasty. :(
Oh, Lucy's suit is a one-piece, but its one of those with the back completely expose, seems like. ^^
Aww, Miss Ellie tells a rather cute story of how, when she was 4 or 5, her daddy took her to a cattle auction, and at first she was upset because she didn't want any of the cattle sold off - but once she saw all the other cattle and heard all the other buys, "pride took over and I swelled up." Her daddy's cattle was the best! :lol: Sounds a lot like something that should have happened to Fallon. X)
Huh. Now the conversation has taken a slightly more boring turn, though Jock said something about Bobby taking some kind of job in Vegas. Judging by both Bobby and Pam's reactions, the former hadn't told the latter yet. Heh, Bobby's face, "Nice goin', Dad!" :lol:
Miss Ellie mentions how Gary, her third son, "was the cowboy of my sons. He really loved this ranch!" So he was the only one who took an interest in the ranch part of the Ewing fortune; JR and Bobby have taken more interest in the oil part.
Uh oh. The mention of Gary's name has made things quiet and awkward.
JR goes over to soak his feet in the pool...
...and HAH! Lucy is brazen enough to loudly point out how quiet things get when her daddy's name is mentioned. "I wonder why that is?" That sarcastic little smile... right now she strikes me as a wild combination of Fallon and Sammy Jo. ^^
Both Lucy and Sue Ellen have got their eyes on JR, whose own eyes are covered by gigantic sunglasses.
Sue Ellen brings over a cold drink for her "darlin'." Oh Sue Ellen...
Ah man, I was hoping she was gonna dunk the other glass over his head! Oh well. Dang, she's hot, though. Skinny, but hot. I wanna see her and Pam catfight now. :lol: And serve Lucy a few slaps. :floor:
Now Sue Ellen (whose bathing suit is also the kind with the back all exposed) is telling Jock she's sure JR would "just love" to go to the cattle auction with him. Ah, I see; after the miscarriage incident, Sue Ellen wants her husband to get back in good with his father. I can see why.
Now she's kneeling next to JR and tells him with that phony, manipulative cheerfulness of hers' that "Daddy" is taking him to the cattle auction. "Isn't that wonderful?" And JR gives her such a look... before shooting a quick, nodding smile to his father. Sue Ellen stands, with a dark look on her own face. She turns and walks back over to the seats...
...yeah, work it, girl, hahaha...
...She picks up a brown... shawl? robe? Can't tell, it just matches her suit, and JR gets up and follows her. Uh oh...
Oh, it was a 'wrap' of some kind. Now she looks like she's wearing a little brown dress. Not bad. But anyway, JR confronts her, and Sue Ellen sarcastically tells him that its a wife's duty to come to the aid of her husband. And that spending time with his father is important, no matter what the environment.
JR tells her to listen-
"NO! YOU LISTEN."
Dang, Sue Ellen, way to law down the law! Now she's giving hubby the run down: "Little brother Bobby is taking everything away from you!" Wow, now she's sounding like Sable. ^^
And Sue Ellen still thinks of Pam as "that girl." Pfft.
JR then comes swingin' back, saying that Ewing Oil is where its at because of him, that he's had Bobby running errands, etc, etc. And that if Sue Ellen wants to keep sleeping between those satin sheets...
(...satin sheets? 0_0 )
...then she shouldn't tell him how to run his business.
Gotta give the guy credit for not letting his wife hen-peck him, though Sue Ellen, you really should just divorce this guy and find somebody else while you're still young and beautiful... except I know you won't. You'll be stuck with JR till you're both old and wrinkly. :bah:
Heh heh, the scene cuts to Pam and Bobby's bedroom, and as bathing suit-clad Pam enters, the camera pratically flies up to her to get a better look! X)
Oh, so it was a convention Bobby was going to in Vegas, not a new job. Whoopsy. :lol:
Aww, and Pam obviously doesn't want him to go. And of course, Bobby was saving the news for "sort of a surprise."
...oh my gosh, the look she gave him, I'm surprised he didn't burst into flames! :lol:
AWWWWWWWWWW, he tells her they're BOTH going! Yaaaaay! :D:D:D And that means we're not going to get the whole contrived "you told me/you lied to me/I'm going anyway" bullsh*t! XD Good, cuz I hate those scenes.
Wow, the Dallas theme song plays while we get a grand tour of Vegas. And the high-up shot of the hotel interior makes me dizzy.
WOW! That is some dress Pam's got on, all nice and white! :D White really is her signature color, isn't it? Guess its supposed to symbolize her purity, huh? I rather like that. :) Pam looks magnificent, though. :D
Ewww, some creepy-looking dude is staring after them! Stalker? Assassin? Blackmailer? Potential rapist? Obviously he's going to be important later on...
A big fat guy has entered a party. He looks very much a happily rich type of guy. XD Oh my gosh, this party is so '70s... though that's cuz it WAS the '70s, but, yeah. :lmao:
Hm, Bobby is chatting with some random old cowboy and his wife, talking about how cattling has stolen his dad's heart.
Cut to the cattle auction. Oh, this is gonna be awkward... or at least I figure... and kinda hope. ;)
There's JR, Jock, Lucy and Ray (I was wondering when he was gonna turn up) in the stands. Now they're out walking... oh gosh, Lucy is so tiny next to all those tall men.
WOW! Jock just gave Lucy a couple hundred bucks just in case she got hungry as she breaks off from the men to go do something else, and Lucy just says "Thanks" like its no big deal... but then again, she's probably used to being given that much cash at a moment's notice. And Jock is supposed to be a millionaire, so... dang, I wish I could do that, just casually hand out $200 like it was just a five or a ten. Heh, I'd certainly get popular, that's for sure. :lol:
Oh, and Ray's going with Lucy. More dang drama between these two? I'm kinda sick of their relationship right now, I hope something different happens... Hm, Lucy didn't want him to come with her, though he's still going after her because Jock told him to. Hm...
Lucy seems really upset now, and now they've exited the auction and have across the street. Lucy's still trying to shake Ray off. She threatens to tell Jock about her and Ray, but Ray isn't at all intimidated. Wow, she sure is determined... oh, she's got a hot date now, huh? I wonder if that's that waiter from the pool...
Yep, looks like it. I think, anyway, he's not very distinctive. :giggle:
Lucy gets in the guy's car and tells Ray she'll be back in an hour.
"It's not what you think."
Um, Lucy? I don't think Ray's an idiot.
"Oh, I don't care!"
Hah, that's a gesture I remember Fallon doing.
Oh! It's Pam's cousin. I had forgotten all about him. Ray tells Lucy that Jock won't take to this at all.
"Then you make sure he doesn't find out."
Good one, Lucy. Even Ray looks impressed. But mostly irritated.
They're going to the Hot Bisquit, and... we get a rather dramatic close-up of a blonde waitress in a pink uniform. She looks oddly familiar... or maybe she's just looks like someone else. Meh? Heh, though she's amusingly disgusted at the meager tip the last customer left her ("Nice").
Huh. Lucy and Pam's cousin go right up to her; both parties seem rather pleased to see one another. Oh, so they've already met here, huh?
...wait, is Lucy here specifically to meet the waitress?
.......wait, did I just hear Lucy volunteer to help the waitress clear the table?!
....did we pass through the Looking Glass? 0_____0
The guy behind the counter talks to Pam's cousin, commenting how the two women look like sisters. Oh, the waitress' name is Val?
I know I've seen the name Val thrown around quite a lot whenever I've seen people talk about Dallas before, so I'm guessing this is the introduction of a very important character?
OH MY GOSH IT'S LUCY'S *MOTHER*?!
...I did not see that coming. :lolo: Well that explains a lot. Although it does put Lucy in a remarkably more sympathetic light than how she's been beforehand. Aww, she looks kinda sweet, helping her mom out with the dishes like that, that little "Oops!" she makes when she almost breaks them. :lol:
(I'm sadly reminded of Claudia as a waitress and the scene where Lindsay dropped the dishes, causing her mother to yell at her... and for Lindsay to cry... again...)
And now Bobby is seeing his guests out of the apartment. I noticed one of the women had a particularly bony back. ^^
Bobby calls up to Pam that the guests are gone... but then there's a knock at the door.
Um... a waiter comes in, and starts cleaning up. He says he's compulsive, he can't stand the thought of this messy room, "Once I start I can't stop." ...Ummm...?
Bobby's not having any of it, though, he takes the guy by the arm, and looks him in the eye... and recognizes his face. Obviously the guy from the airport earlier. The guy makes a really creepy face at Bobby.
*GASP*!
Its Gary! Bobby's brother! Lucy's father! Holy...
Heh! For a split second, I thought Bobby was gonna punch him, but actually it was just Patrick Duffy's weird acting as Bobby was really just pulling his long-lost brother in for a bear hug.
...Wow. Yet another fanservice-y moment as Pam walks down the stairs wearing a black swimsuit before wrapping herself up in a white bathrobe. For a split second I wondered why she was wearing that, but the remembered Bobby mentioned a few seconds ago that he and his wife were going to go down to the pool. Perfect excuse on the writer's part to keep Pam nearly nude for that much longer this episode. :lol:
Heh, Pam doesn't know what to make of this, and she makes no connection when Bobby tells her this is Gary, not that I blame her. Gary's not someone she would be thinking about often.
Aww, but the way how she looks at Gary once she realizes who she is, that quietly surprised delight. X)
...Gary still looks creepy as hell. I can't remember if I've heard his name thrown around as often as Val's, so I don't know if he'll stay around. I kinda hope he doesn't, cuz... well, he's creepy-looking. Ew. I mean, Bobby and JR aren't good-looking either, but I can at least look at them without feeling the urge to go "Ew!" :lmao:
Aww, Lucy and her mommy are in a park together. Val's running her hand through her daughter's hair.
"I can't believe how lucky I am I found you again," she says. I wish I could remember what the story was with her back in season 1, but oh well. I'm sure it'll be brought up later on. Hopefully.
Lucy wants to hear more about her mom and her daddy, even though Val points out she's been telling her daughter the same story for the last couple months. (It is kind've interesting, though, how for once, Lucy going off with a boy in his car really was "Not what you think.")
So the story is that a 15-year-old Val aged herself up to 16 "to get the job", and then "the prettiest man I ever saw"... wait, Val. You thought *Gary* was... well, he was younger then... nope, I can't see it. I can't. Just can't. :floor:
"What does a man in love eat for lunch?" Oh Gary, that line... and using it on a waitress you just met.
Huh. Though from the sound of things, Gary was a real gentleman. Waited till they were married to consumate. ^^ That seems like such a rarity in soaps. Heh heh, and Val said she was glad about that; "I was a good girl."
"He was the dearest man every day I knew him... till he took me home to meet his family."
And just like that, the tone of the scene shifts from dreamy and nostalgic and becomes darker and sinister. Lucy certainly understands.
Huh, so the family didn't want Gary married to a waitress? And Gary "wasn't strong enough to stand up to them. ...Especially to JR."
JR...
Oooh, Lucy's face...
Huh. She just said she always thought she hated JR more than anyone, which is weird because I never got that impression last season. But at least she has reason to *now*.
I'm gonna pause and make a theory: the Gary with Pam and Bobby is a phony, and Val will be instrumental in revealing the fraud. And that could lead into Val being welcomed back to Southfork...? But anyway, on with the episode!
Gary explains to them that he gambled himself into debt and heavy alcohol, and says, "So I did the only thing a real man could do."
"Abandon his family?" I thought.
"I blacked out."
Oh. I guess a real man would do that too. :lmao:
So he explains that he eventually wound up in Vegas, and no, Bobby, he's been *trying* to get on the straight and narrow, but he kept slipping back. If this isn't the real Gary, then he's got a really good explanation.
Hah! And he said he got over it by becoming a bartender. "You keep all the stuff in front of you there! Its the only way."
And to deal with his gambling addiction, he got a job dealing blackjack. Bobby voices my thoughts, "I love it! I love it!" :lol:
Gary also explains he saw Bobby's name on the guest list, and that's how he knew where they were and why he came up. Bobby asks if he would have come up if it had been Jock's name on the list. Gary says he might have.
And JR?
Ooh, Gary gets such a dark look and whispers, "What do you think?" I think I'm convinced this is the real Gary after all... maybe. XD
Pam tells Gary she thinks they have something in common.
Yup. Pam still hates JR for causing her miscarriage. Not that I blame her.
Bobby lightens the mood by saying this golden line:
"Hey c'mon. JR's not that bad."
Pam and Gary crack up. :lolo:
Back to Lucy and her mama...
Awww, Lucy wants to live with her mom! X) Val, of course, is worried what Jock would if he found out. Lucy suggests moving to another state. Val says they tried that when Lucy was a baby: "If he found us then, he'd find us now!"
Boy, that sure makes Jock sound creepy, doesn't it?
Lucy points out that Bobby married Digger's daughter and Jock hasn't broken them up. Val's response: "Just give him time, sugar-plum."
Cynical, isn't she? Though understandably so. She tells Lucy they'll keep things the way they are - for now. "Then we'll see." Lucy seems satisfied with that, at least.
This warm mother-daughter exchange is so sweet, it makes me sad to think of all the awful stuff these two might go through in the upcoming seasons. :(
Val is an attractive woman, though. Her face is a little haggard, but that's to be expected, given the life she's led.
Bobby's telling Gary about his daughter. The way how he describes her, you'd think he was talking about Shirley Temple! :lol: "A smile that would melt rocks"? Oh Bobby...
"And sweet lord, is she sweet!"
"Oh Bobby, she's a wildcat!"
Heh heh, Pam's got the right idea, though I can think of a few other words I'd use to describe Lucy Ewing...
Pam gives Gary a more truthful run-down of what his daughter (and her lifestyle) is like, though Bobby continues to point out the "brighter" parts.
"So far I like her," Gary says with a grin. Nice to know he's under no delusions.
Pam is pleased with that and says she thought he would. He asks her if she likes Lucy.
For a second, I thought Pam was going to admit that she didn't, but then she says, with a sincere smile, that she did. Huh. Weird. Hard to say if I totally believe Pam right now or not. So far her relationship with Lucy has been a little muddled. They haven't had really much in the way of one-on-one time, not since episode 2. So I really don't know where they stand with one another, especially since Lucy still has occasional bouts of cruelty towards Pam. Of course, that could just be how Lucy relates to people (aside from her mother).
Bobby picks up the phone to tell Mama that Gary is coming home, but Gary stops him. He's in no hurry to come back home. But Bobby tries to convince him. Will he succeed?
Gary seems to not want to come back because of JR, though the way how he says, "Maybe just for a visit" has got me suspicious that this isn't the real Gary.
Gary checks his watch and says he has to get going, but he'll think about coming home. Hm, he kind've agreed a little too readily, or at least he said he'd think about it a little too soon. I don't know, I would have figured Bobby would have had to work harder than that to convince his brother, especially after all he went through...
When they're alone, Pam voices her doubts, reminding him how tough his family can be. Though I think she went a little far in saying, "Look what they did to my dad at the barbecue!"
Pam, honey, Digger did that to himself. I'm sorry, but your dad's a pathetic drunk. You can't blame anyone else, especially not your husband's family, for that.
Bobby points out that Gary isn't anything like Digger, and Pam says she hopes not (ah, so she's slightly acknowledging her dad's faults, huh?). Then Bobby says a weird line about getting into his swim trunks and being burnt to a crisp. :lol:
Bobby reveals Gary was Miss Ellie's favorite son, "A Southfork among Ewings!" she used to call him.
Gary's now alone in a Vegas restaurant... oh no wait, Pam's come to join him. She tells him that Bobby got waylaid by some friends and will be here in a minute.
But dang, Pam looks *gorgeous* here. This is the first time this episode she's had her hair down. Its falling in flowing sweeps around her shoulders, and once again, she's wearing white. Absolutely gorgeous. How did a guy like Bobby get a girl like her? I'm sorry, but I just had to say that. :lol: (Hah, I'm so mean and superficial.)
Gary says he doesn't hate JR or Jock anymore, but he doesn't need to see them. Ever. And Pam makes the most hilariously adorable quirk with her eyes. :lol:
Aww, Gary misses his mama, though. Though he says he can live with that.
"But..."
"Lucy," says Pam, hitting the nail on the head.
Gary says he's an outsider, and Pam knows what the feels like. "They don't make it easy on outsiders."
And that, Pam, is why the Ewings are such miserable people.
Gary more correctly points out though that its JR who doesn't make it easy on outsiders. Though I keep on thinking about how Sue Ellen keeps on shutting Pam out. I'd like to see Pam slap Sue Ellen. And vice versa. :lolo:
Gary says he thinks he can do it, make a visit.
Pam says he can lean on her, another outsider, and he says he appreciates that.
Bobby arrives, and he's sorry he's late.
HAH! And he already had three plane tickets home to Dallas. Boy, he sure was sure of himself, wasn't it?
Oh! Its that one scene that I briefly saw in the preview: Ellie comes out, Jock asks her what's wrong, and she says, "Nothing! ...He's coming home!"
Oh, Ellie's so happy, and Jock... looks so sad and awkward and hurt, like he doesn't know how to feel. JR and Sue Ellen don't look too thrilled either, though JR forces some cheer when Mama asks him if he heard: "Yes, Mama, I heard!" Oh my gosh, he might as well have been kicked in the nuts when he said that. :lmao:
Miss Ellie more or less gives orders that JR forget about the office and Sue Ellen not go into town. "Of course not, Miss Ellie," Sue Ellen says with that phony Stepford grin of hers'. Oh my gosh, somebody SMACK her!
Miss Ellie continues to look bubbly... but then she looks suspicious and her face hardens, and says, "I don't want anything to go wrong."
Wow, and she really lays into her husband and son, telling them the past is in the past, do what they can to help Gary settle back in, "Don't put up walls."
Jock starts to walk by his wife.
But then Miss Ellie says in the most warning tone of voice I've ever heard her speak: "Jock, did you hear me?"
He turns omniously around...
...but he asks her what kind of man does she think he is. His son is coming home and he barely knows him. He's not going to put up walls, he's going to tear them down. He continues walking off.
Sue Ellen is NOT pleased, and says JR better get another office. JR, however, is more confident, and I think he has reason to: Gary is a rancher, not an oil-man.
Sue Ellen does point out Lucy will be excited.
"Lucky Lucy," mocks JR.
And once inside, JR goes straight for the booze. Sue Ellen sweetly points out its not even lunch yet. She again reminds me of Sable when she voices her suspicions that Gary wants something. JR says Gary's not smart enough to want anything, or strong enough to ask for it.
Sue Ellen makes herself interesting by subtly (and mockingly) confronting JR about why he drove Gary away.
JR, however, insists he did everything to keep Gary around, that he was going to send him to college and annul his marriage "to that trashy girl!" You're one to talk, JR, about trash.
"Only he left and that girl stayed, right?"
"He did not leave, he flat ran out!"
I'm reminded of The Colbys, where Jason once described Phillip's marriage to Frankie.
JR says that Gary was always running away.
Sue Ellen, with a smirk on her face, asks her husband how he's going to handle two brothers, though JR says he doesn't have to handle anyone. He's confident Gary won't stay. "He's a loser, been a loser every day of his life. ... He'll mess up this visit. Without any help from me."
I kinda hope that'll happen, that Gary will be the one who messes up while JR gets to sit back and silently gloat. X)
Lucy's out riding horses wearing a lacy tank-top. Oh wait, its not a tank-top, its a tube-top, with... a weird little... flap/flounce/whatever hanging off it... whatever. She's looking for Ray now.
Oh ew, now she's flirting with him again. I mean ew, Lucy, just move on, will you? Move ON.
Oh, don't let her kiss you, Ray... oh good, he's pushing her away. Keep on pushing, Ray. Keep on pushing...
And Bobby and Pam have pulled up, with Gary in the back. Lucy sees them through the window. Oh, this should be interesting... and thankfully it means the end of Lucy trying to get into Ray's pants. Ew!
Gary notes that Southfork looks the same.
Lucy continues to stare out the window. She asks Ray who Gary is. Ray gets out his binoculars.
Miss Ellie comes out... and oh my gosh, how can a moment be so heartbreaking and so heartwarming at the same time? Wow, gotta give props to Miss Ellie's actor, the way she said, "Oh Gary!" carried all the weight of a mother missing her favorite child for too many years.
Jock has followed Miss Ellie out, and shakes Gary's hand. Aw, and Gary calls him "Daddy." :lol:
Hm, I guess this really is the real Gary after all... maybe. Some twist is bound to happen...
Ray doesn't say anything. Lucy impatiently takes the binoculars away and looks herself. She asks Ray if he knows who it is. At first, he remains silent. Then he says he knows who it is. Lucy looks at him, takes another look at Gary. Realization dawns on her.
We get a great shot of Lucy running up a pathway towards the group.
Everyone turns around upon her arrival, and Lucy slows to a walk.
Gary knows her right away.
She knows him right away.
Aww, just as Gary called his own father "Daddy", so Lucy calls Gary "Daddy."
They don't hug, like I was expecting them to, although I suppose them just reaching out and holding hands is good enough, and realistic enough. Its a sobering moment for both of them, and a hug wouldn't necessarily be... well, necessary. :lol:
