Yes, focus on the next generation of Ewings, primarily John Ross and Christopher, and their various cousins and half-siblings. With J.R. gone they pretty much have to. I love Patrick and Linda but you can't base a show around a couple of 70something year old actors if you want to draw a viable audience.

I very much agree - which in someways makes a very different Dallas but it would be nice for the occasional appearance of an original actor and the interior set must logically fit the original in some fashion which makes sense.

I'd still have Bobby and Sue Ellen on the show, Bobby is still married to Anne and living at Southfork, they'd just be more supporting characters. Not full leads.

I honestly think the only future for Dallas is a complete reboot with new actors. It's too late for another continuation series.

There should be an another option:

O Yes, keep the original characters in the background as long as they are in prison and completely frustrated with every single deal the youngsters pull off in running the company (hopefully good, fair and honest with giving much of the profits to charity).

Absolutely this.

A continuation of Dallas will never be able to please the fans of the show and therefore why would anyone want to produce something that has so much baggage.

We have also lost major key characters, without whom Dallas simply isn't Dallas - we learnt that from TNT.

If Dallas ever returned it needs to be a complete reboot, younger viewers will never be interested in a continuation and any producer worth their salt would want to create something new and vibrant that has mass appeal.

No TV show should ever be made for "fans", they need to be aimed at the biggest audience possible with some fan service thrown in.

That aside - it’s like that bit in Thelma and Louise when Thelma says ‘you wanna go to Mexico from Oklahoma but you don’t wanna go through Texas?’
I really wish for a continuation, but I also feel after the failure of TNT Dallas, the odds are slim to none. A complete reboot is probably all we could hope for at this point. That said, why would Bobby and Sue Ellen have to be in the background or recurring if their was a continuation? The original series had characters such as Jock, Miss Ellie, and Clayton. Angela Channing was the lead on Falcon Crest, and Blake Carrington was older on Dynasty. I do think a continuation should focus on John Ross and Christopher, like the original series focused on JR and Bobby, but Bobby and Sue Ellen don't have to be be put to pasture.

They also need to throw in Lucas, Cally's daughter(or son, I don't remember), and possibly James(recast) and his son. John Ross and Christopher need to have wives or girlfriend's that are front and center as well, like Sue Ellen and Pam were. Sigh. If only a real fan of Dallas had been in control of the TNT version. What might have been.

this is a good idea. I'd also add CGI versions of deceased characters like JR and Jock being shown these deals tauntingly by the Joel Grey character from Conundrum in some sort of realm of eternal damnation

why would anyone want to produce something that has so much baggage
The problem I see with a reboot is the comparison between the old and the new. I'm speaking of course about those original fans and this in itself carries baggage. Many moons ago - possibly in Soapchat days - I put forward the idea of a continuation of Dallas except we now have a new family residing at Southfork. The opening scene is of Bobby handing over the keys to Southfork to the new head of the family before he drives off down the long driveway. When he reaches the main road he pulls over...takes one more solemn look at the house before driving off.

Perhaps in this continuation we could have Linda Gray - on occasion - "Special Guest Star" as Sue Ellen Ewing when she befriends the matriarch of Southfork. Or she comes into contact with the new family when John Ross introduces his new wife who just happens to be the eldest daughter of the new residents of Southfork. Perhaps John Ross is miffed because Bobby sells the property and John Ross is determined to reclaim his birth right. This could be a good angle for a continuation as the patriarch and matriarch are trying to determine if John Ross is part of the family or scheming to get Southfork back.

Anyway just an idea to throw out there as I would prefer a continuation.

No TV show should ever be made for "fans", they need to be aimed at the biggest audience possible with some fan service thrown in.

The original hit series gave us such great actors as Barbara Bel Geddes, Jim Davis and Larry Hagman. Whilst Jim passed away during the original series run, his death wasn't squandered - the battle for control of Ewing Oil was pivotal to the series success. However Dallas without Barbara and Larry just isn't Dallas any more.

When we lost Ken Kercheval a few years ago that was another nail in the coffin of having a continuation series. Dallas isn't just about the Ewing's or the Barnes family, it's about the actors who played the characters on the show too. Cynthia Cidre found that out the hard way with her continuation series. That's why a further continuation series just isn't viable any more. Too many of the core original cast have sadly passed away.

For Dallas to return the only way to do it is have a complete reboot. That may be sacrilege to many of the show's fanbase but I have to be realistic here. Warner Bros. own the rights to Dallas following their purchase of Lorimar back in 1989. If they so decided to inject money into bringing Dallas back for a new audience the only viable way to do it is reboot the show with new actors. It's a risky situation because the actor stepping in to the role of JR Ewing will have big boots to fill. However it could still work if the show was allowed to take it's own direction and not try to emulate the Lorimar show which came before it. Whilst I will always love the Lorimar original and have contempt for the Cidre TNT Cyntax continuation series, the opportunity to build on the success of the Lorimar Dallas is still there for the taking by Warner's. A reboot Dallas doesn't have to automatically duplicate what has gone before. It can be free to explore the characters in a different way. Case in point the character of Jock Ewing. In the original Lorimar show Jim Davis died of a brain cancer so the series had to write him out. In any rebooted Dallas this would not be the case. Whilst I love the original hit series any future for Dallas itself lies with a reboot NOT with another continuation. The TNT series unfortunately was squandered with the Ewing family present on the show like Guest Stars which didn't bode well for the show's long term future.

In summary, any future for Dallas itself lies with Warner Bros. and whether they would want to continue the show as a complete reboot because the Cyntax TNT Dallas probably left a nasty taste in the mouth at Warner's. I'm of the opinion that despite the failure of the TNT Cyntax Dallas worldwide, Warner's may still revive the show as a complete reboot further down the line. Reboots of American hit series are currently rife at the moment in the USA. It's only a matter of time before Warner Bros. realises the value of Dallas and reboots it for a modern audience. So stay tuned everybody because Dallas is bound to be making a comeback on TV very soon......

A continuation is highly unlikely because only Bobby and SueEllen are left. Dallas TNT had still a solid structure in the beginning:

Bobby vs. JR with their sons.

You fight with your brother. No matter how tough the fights are, you're still family.
You simply don't have this connection to cousins, distant cousins, half siblings etc. The history of Dallas is too complex and too distant to portray "family" drama. I get along with most of cousins which I don't regard as family, but as friends, others I just ignore/having no contact.

In Dallas TNT where was a scene at JR's memorial service. A fist fight startet and Christopher told John Ross "I got this, cousin."

I get the intention of the writers to emphasize the importance of family, but it did not work there, it felt forced like any continuation would.

The only imaginable Dallas product for me is a reboot starting from scratch.
But please set in the 80s. Dallas is a series which belongs in that Era for me.

It's tough saying goodbye to a show you love.

It's also tough saying that a continuation of that show just isn't viable in the here and now. As much as I love the original Lorimar Dallas we are not going to get another continuation series spun from it.

Dallas needs to be rebooted and the sooner the better. :)

‘Needs’ is a very strong word. Why would you want Dallas’ brand and memory to be tarnished by some glossy reboot which is likely only going to appeal to a glossy teenage/millennial audience?

No thanks. Why does everything have to be rebooted?

That’s the main thing I don’t understand nowadays.

The Dynasty continuation or whatever it is on Netflix makes me want sunglasses looking at it, and I have no desire whatsoever to see that happen to Dallas.

Dallas lives in my heart, it’s part of me, I don’t want or need it to come back with a bunch of people I don’t know who will likely be cast from reality tv.

It’s more important to me that Dallas is respected for what it was - is - if TNT couldn’t achieve that, what hope would some reboot have? Only diehard fans would get the story and references and younger or new fans would be talking about it like something it isn’t or never was.

I just can’t see the attraction at all.
