Such sad news indeed. My condolences to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II was truly a remarkable person who lived an amazing life.

May King Charles III will be a worthy successor.

As an American, I don't pay much attention to the British royals but Queen Elizabeth was a stable and dignified representative for her nation.

Seems like a good time to abolish the monarchy; it's all downhill from here.

When our Dutch Queen Beatrix abdicated it felt like the end of the era, we now have a new King but to be honest it didn't feel the same for me as when Queen Beatrix was still there on the throne, but the new King and Queen has been embraced by most people in our country.

I hope the Britsch volk can deal with the new situation in the future as well.

I woke this morning to this sad news. During work today it was such a sombre mood throughout the day. The Queen has been a constant in my 57 years. My deepest sympathies to her immediate family.

She was a remarkable lady who lived a fantastic life. Just thinking about all the special people she has met, all the hands she has shaken all the good and bad times she has lived through.


As people mourn around the world, I hope there is great celebrations as we look back through her years on this earth.

I also hope we can share various tributes which are fascinating to watch.

The PM, Liz Truss was notified of the queen’s death at 16:30 hours yesterday afternoon which means that she must have died at some point prior to that time.

Her death wasn’t officially announced until around 18:30 hours which means a gap of at least 2 hours, possibly more.

Her death wasn’t officially announced until around 18:30 hours which means a gap of at least 2 hours, possibly more.

The procedures and protocols that kick into action when The Queen dies are known as Operation London Bridge and they were leaked to the media some time ago. From memory, it stated that after her death, members of her family would have to be notified, as would world leaders, especially those for which she is also their head of state. I also would imagine that key government and diplomatic officials, such as ambassadors and High Commissioners, would need to be informed as they would need to be prepared to respond to enquires related to the news. All this would have to take place before the world media could be told. I would suspect this process would take several hours which is why I don't believe some of the timelines that the media were reporting yesterday.

I suspect the Queen died late morning yesterday and the announcement at 12.30 pm that her condition was causing concern for her doctors was made after she died to prepare people for the news, to account for various activities (such as the Royals descending on Balmoral) and to provide cover for any leaks of the news. Previously, Buckingham Palace always refused to comment on speculation about the Queen's health and used the line that they don't comment on private health matters so the fact that they made that statement yesterday seemed a bit suspicious to me.

I reckon there was about 6 hours between when the Queen actually died and when the news was made available to the media and that seems like a more realistic timeframe to complete everything that was outlined in that phase of Operation London Bridge.

The family are awful though and demonstrably racist but now is not the time for me to criticize them. Whatever views there are of the family and the undemocratic institution of the monarchy, they are mourning the death of their mother, grandmother and great grandmother and fit that I have sympathy for them.

On the whole I agree with you. Seriously... I do.

But the role of "Queen Of The United Kingdom and Commonwealth" was foisted onto her at a tender age by decisions made by other people. Her uncle the King abdicated meaning her father had Kingship dropped on him, he passed away meaning next in line is Elizabeth. All because of a decision by someone else. She stepped up at 21 I believe.

Her family is maelstrom of nonces, liars, cheats, racists, work-shy lay abouts and gold diggers that would make a street corner brass roll her eyes with incredulity.

HRH QEII has succeeded in her duty. Women that succeed in their endeavors leave me speechless. She has! That said, an elected head of state would be the way forward.

I don't have anything of substance to add but I couldn't let it pass without acknowledging the Queen's massive contribution.
Although she kept at arm's length she was technically Australia's head of state and the one true constant.

Its been sad to witness her health declining, especially since she lost Prince Philip, but I always thought and hoped she would go on to at least 100 like her mother before her. She was an incredible lady and I was proud to have HM Queen Elizabeth as a figurehead for our country.

My criticism of the family and calling them "awful" wasn't really directed at Elizabeth 2 herself (although there are things I could criticise her for) but of the monarchy as an institution and of the family as a whole.

I totally accept what you say about her stepping into the role out of duty and executing it in a manner that has brought her many admirers worldwide. When you consider that an unfortunate twist of fate could have left us with a monarch who was a suspect pedophile or a a nazi sympathiser, or the adulterer we now have, in many ways we were lucky the job fell to her and that she was able to hold on to it for so long.

Makes sense to me. Yesterday when I first heard a newscaster say "King Charles III" for a moment I thought... who's that? It's still not hitting my ear "right"
Windson Castle is visible from the M4, when I found myself passing, I'd always glance across to see if the standard was flying (meaning that QEII was there) and give an approving when it was.

I'm not a big royalist, I think that an elected head of state is the way forward. But HRH QEII was one of, if not on occasions, the only female head of state. Successful women leave be breathless. I was raised by two. I really liked the photo or QEII greeting Liz Truss and done.

Believe me, the UK has it's fair share of social problems. I mean it's fair share of social problems that'll make run away, unless like me you live here.
But one thing that the the UK does extremely well is the pomp and pageantry befitting state occasions. The proclamation of King Charles IiI was sobering while still befitting the accession to the thrown of a new King of the United Kingdom And commonwealth .

Still mourning the lose of his mother and understating his duty must be executed although by accident of birth. His speech last night was, to me, confirmation that he is now the King, and still coming to terms that both his parents have passed on.

My corner of Hampshire has noticed and marked the changing of the guard. Social problems aplenty in the UK but pomp and pageantry always befitting of state occasions.

I was due to go out for lunch today but one friend has covid and the other - her mother was unwell and secretly im very glad it was cancelled

I have been totally enthralled by the process, the ceremonies, which are steeped in history and go back > 500 years

Its fascinating, compelling and sadly Prince Charles, now King Charles III has lost his mother less than 48 hours ago and to be in the public eye, the whole eyes of the worlds press watching you when you are mourning for your mother of 73 years must be incredibly hard

And @Biggie is correct, and personally feel no one does pomp and pageantry as well as the UK, as we are steeped in history and its a fascinating one
(i would have loved to have been around in Henry VIII days and Elizabeth I)

I have been very proud to be British this week and i think that the country will be in safe hands. King Charles (Its hard not to say Prince) speech last night was a wonderful, heartfelt and moving tribute to his mother and I commend him for it, as it must have been very hard to deliver, so much raw emotion and you could see how visibly upset he was - i needed a few hankies

@Barbara Fan I've been watching since news broke about QEII being watched by the doctors. But as the day rolled on, I noticed that this was different.

When ITV flashed up her image with the caption, "1926 - 2022" something that I struggle to understand hit me.

I'm not a big royalist but this is on a whole different level. I have been watching since Thursday. The history past and present is not lost on me.

Watching King Charles III yesterday evening was. .words escape me.
Pomp and pageantry displayed today... only the UK can pull that off and yes I felt "proud" to be a "Basingstoker" living in Hampshire in England in the UK. If you follow my train of thought.
