Return To Eden DVD boxset re-release

A boxset comprising the 1983 mini-series & the 1985 sequel series is to be released in November by Via Vision in Australia.

The mini series stars Rebecca Gilling, James Reyne & Wendy Hughes, with Jim Smillie, Olivia Hamnett, Peter Gwynne & John Lee.

The series stars Rebecca Gilling, James Smillie, Peta Toppano, Daniel Abineri, Megan Williams, Peter Cousens, Nicki Paull, Angelo D'Angelo & Peter Gwynne.

I'm hoping the series episodes are of a better quality picture than the MRA release boxset which I already have.

The new boxset re--release can be pre-ordered on the Sanity website in Australia.

I'm hoping that the new release of the 1985 series is better picture quality than the two I've all ready got.

I have the MRA release which unfortunately ends on the cliffhanger & the Danish release which ends on the new scene filmed to bring the show to a close. The picture quality on both is adequate but not great with the MRA release having slightly better picture quality over the Danish release which is ironic as this one isn't complete.

Fingers crossed it's a better quality transfer from the original 1985 masters. I'm hoping there will be a region two or region free release so I can get this latest edition of Return To Eden. :)

Same here. I have the Kaleidoscope version of the mini-series (with a very similar cover to the upcoming new release. It has shockingly bad picture quality. I also have the MRA version of the full series.

From what I understand, they've been released several times and all with unacceptable quality, so I'm viewing the new release with a kind of hopeful scepticism.

I don't mind at all that the MRA version ends on the cliffhanger. This is the way I watched it back in 1986 and I didn't even know about the rushed ending that tied up the loose ends until I joined this site.

Ideally, the new set would have the option to watch either version of the final episode. Or at the very least the alternative ending as a bonus feature.

I have the Kaleidoscope version of the mini-series too but I have a great copy of the mini series which I got last year.

It's this one from MediumRare and was released in 2018. It should still be available on eBay or Amazon, eBay was where I got mine.

What I like about the first R4 version is that the mini and sequel are released in identically-sized boxes, eventhough that wasn't necessary for the mini-series (only two discs).
The artwork looks a bit schlock but not entirely inappropriate, but I would have preferred a different image for the sequel box set. Considering that they were trying so hard to be the next Dynasty.

I guess this is one of the re-releases, or is it fanmade?

But I think all TV series on DVD should have the original font title and most iconic image placed in the center of the artwork.

With additional smaller images of the cast as they appear in the series per season.

The image of the boxset you posted is an Australian (R4) release evident by the blue classification rating at the bottom corner. The one I posted which looks vaguely similar is an R2 European release. Your boxset photo says Umbrella Entertainment on the front, the one I posted has MediumRare written on the back of it.

Yeah it's a pity some DVD releases never use the logo belonging to the actual show on their covers. :)

As if the very idea of a RTE soundtrack wasn't exciting enough, the thing that really made it orgasmic was that it looked so official with that logo (even if the alignment turned out slightly wonky). I mean, just looking at it, I can hear the theme music:

Sometimes I take it off the shelf just to marvel at the mid-Eightiesness of it.

This is the logo I'd like to see on the DVD of the 1986 series. They're welcome to get rid of the burnish effect. Or change the colour. Or even remove the telescoping. But I'd like to see it used somewhere to make it feel official.

Not to mention, surprising!

At first I thought it was an optical illusion, it happens sometimes with those lines. Not that it would change anything, it's not like you could un-optical-illusion it.

I had to fix it.

I have that CD release it's great.

There's an error on the contents of the disc though, where it says Closing Titles it isn't actually the closing theme at all but the main opening theme to the 1985 series. :)

Yes, and Main Titles/Return To Eden is the opening theme for the first episode of the maxi-series, which is a different arrangement to the Main Titles used for the rest of the season: slower, with gorgeous sweeping strings and full of drama.

Because of the different titles/theme, I've often wondered if that first episode of the maxi-series was shot as a Pilot some time before the rest of the season.

I'm not sure about it being shot as a pilot, I don't think so. The show was intended to be a soap opera continuation series spun from the original 1983 mini series of the same name. The music is gorgeous from Brian May though.

I really do love this show. :)

I'm sure you're right. It just seems a little curious that they didn't lead with their shiny new theme.

Maybe they wanted to carry on the mini-series feel for the first episode. Or perhaps they just thought they'd use Brian May's alternative theme rather than waste it.

Whatever the case, I'm glad they used both versions, in the show and on the CD.

The music is gorgeous from Brian May though.

It really is. I hadn't fully realised how classy and atmospheric it is until the CD soundtrack came out and I heard it out of context.

When it was first shown the first two episodes were shown as a double feature length episode.

The opening theme & the closing theme were a longer slower version than the music which would adorn the regular episodes.

Maybe that's why. :)

Am I the only one to "hate" when they put some "weekly series" photos on the "mini series" dvd, or when they mix them?
And I agree. Dvd should have the actual series logo, and not random logos on their cover.

Now, has anyone seen Khoon Bhari Maang?

I haven't. I fast forward it very much. But the crocodile scene at 49:20 mn is everything
And the ending is quite... Karmic.

Nope. It bothers me as well.

I hadn't, but I've just watched some highlights. It's funny how some scenes are almost frame-by-frame reshoots of the original, while others are far more "creative".

It was like watching Quint in Jaws.

As much as I enjoyed the mini series I'll give this a miss. Checking Sanity's website under additional details it's stated the series will be presented in 4:3 ratio. Well this won't do on my 55" smart TV. How is it I can use software to colorize a black and white photograph with astounding results yet these production houses cannot release a 16:9 version? I want this series to fill my screen. There must be a way to transfer 4:3 ratio to 16:9.

In 8 years Dallas will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. Warner Bros. is a juggernaut of a business. I'd hope someone is already planning a special 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray release with improved coloring and presented in 16:9 format. Wishful thinking I suppose.
