*I haven't seen Candleshoe since it aired on TV some time in the Eighties, but it was one of my favourite cosy Christmas holiday viewing experiences and conjures up very fond memories.

There are a lot of movies that were a lot of fun when I watched them in 2 parts on the Disneyland show. I wonder if they are dated now, but I'd like to re-watch them.

This is an American musical, fantasy, comedy film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. In the movie we meet Mary Poppins, the nanny that all the children want. She possesses magical powers and can fly with her umbrella. She sparks new life into the dull Banks family and teach them to enjoy life. The story is set in the 1910's in Britain. The movie is directed by Robert Stevenson. It is adapted from the book series Mary Poppins by the Australian author Pamela L. Travers. The movie was a huge success for Disney and it won 5 Academy Awards including the Best Actress award for Julie Andrews.

Okay so for round sixteen it's back to another director:

Douglas Sirk was a Danish-German-American director. He was born on 26th April, 1900 in Hamburg, Germany. His parents were both Danish and he was given the name Detlef Sierck. He grew up in Germany and Denmark and began to develop an interest in the theatre when he was a teenager. But it was not yet a profession as he studied law, philosophy and history of art at college. In 1922 he directed a play instead of another director who had been sick and enjoyed it so much that he kept directing theatre plays. By the 1930s he had emerged as one of Germany’s leading stage directors and in 1934 he got a job at UFA where he directed his first feature film April, April (1935). In 1937 he left Europe for the United States, due to his wife being Jewish. In Hollywood he changed his name to Douglas Sirk and in 1942 he landed a contract with Columbia Pictures. His career took off and he worked there for about two decades. He left Hollywood in the early 1960s and retired to Lugano, Switzerland where he died on 14th January, 1987 at the age of 86.


Douglas Sirk is best known for his 1950s Hollywood Melodramas. But which of his movies is your favorite?

When I was a teenager, the Spanish TV interviewed Mr. Sirk in a long special programme (2 or 3 hours..?) and he analyzed his movies in detail. That was when I knew his movies and his work, and since then, I´ve considered him one of the most talented directors ever. No need to say that his "Written on the Wind" became my favorite movie back then and it inspired me to write my own melodramas / fanfics.

So here is my Top Ten:

1- Written on the Wind (what else? Though Lauren Bacall thought it was "just a soap opera"...)
2- All That Heaven Allows
3- Imitation of Life (1959)
4- The Tarnished Angels
5- Magnificent Obsession (1954)
6- There´s Always Tomorrow
7- Sleep, My Love
8- A Time to Love and a Time to Die
9- All I Desire
10- Thunder on the Hill

PS: Movie Nº 6, "There´s Always Tomorrow", might / should have been adapted by the $idre team if they had convinced Ms. VP to come back. It´s a bittersweet but definitely romantic story about old flames and lost chances. Very subtle, done with an excellent taste and a glorious black and white, la Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray nailed their characters. To sum it up, the moral of the story is that you can enjoy an old flame without getting burnt.

PS 2: In case you decide to watch or re-watch his movies, Mr. Sirk said that nothing in his directing was random, everything had its "raison d´être", even a reflection in a window like here:

PS 3: I myself have always considered the Dallas episode "Swan Song" as very sirk-esque (if this is a word):

My mum was a jane Wyman fan and loved this

i think its the only film i have seen of Mr Sirk's or remember
