I think that Stanwyck was wrong for the part as it was written in the early episodes (the nice old woman who gets an affair with a rancher and who is accused to become senile).
It's clear that in mid-season the writers made some changes (the rancher is out, Connie is back at Colby Enterprises) in order to give the right material for her.
They should have done that right from the start.

Unfortunately I don't own the DVD's. I've never used them but there are sites online that will make a gif, but I don't know if you can do that from an episode on a DVD or if that's more for youtube videos.

Have just seen this thread. My laptop recently found itself in a half-baked universe after an auto-ungrade fried a part of my hard-drive. I was offline until it received a new body in an old skin. (Almost the first thing I did after getting back online on Friday evening was to more or less stay put with Netflix, to binge watch. Haven’t ventured further afield until now.)

* A great interview! It must have been hard to work with Stanwyck. She expected to be the female star like Jane Wyman just to realize the show was created to show the love of Fallon & Jeff and HIS family. All the attention went to two british nowhere famous ladys and with every episode Beacham´s star rose bigger and bigger while her role was reduced because of her illness.
* Huson: "I never felt Channing had enough going for her to justify Miles interest in her." - it was right the was it was written. Channing was only a placeholder. Miles will love Fallon forever ...
* Why the hell did they wanted Dickinson all the time? They wanted her to be Krystle, later offered her another part on "Dynasty" and she could have been Sable, too.
* When Al asked Evans (in 1992 for a German documentary about the show) "Did the Colbys hurt Dynasty?" - She said "It definitely damaged the marketing."

Aaron liked her, and Angie might have been a good fit for the DYNASTY that should have been (more than for the DYNASTY that actually was) but, yes, Angie was offered Krystle, Lady Ashley, Sable, and later admitted that turning down Krystle was her biggest professional mistake... She had a thing about her, Angie, at least when she was focused. I like the idea of Dickinson as a Blake's vengeful-towards-Alexis ex-fiancée... smells like Season 8.
FALCON CREST went after her, too, as a long-lost daughter of Angela Channing (instead of the obvious cousin of Maggie Gioberti).

I liked Evans as Krystle (especially in seasons 1 and 2) and I also liked Sable. But I wonder if Dickinson's Lady Ashley could have been different. After all, at some point in the low years of the show most of us admit Collins saved her character even in the worst lines and scenes-- @colbyco even posted some scripts demonstrating that.

Of the three characters, only Lady Ashley is negotiable in terms of casting. And as someone who was supposed to be mysterious, enigmatic, knew the secrets of the world, and the secrets of all men -- all the things dear, sweet Ali Mac Graw couldn't possibly muster --- yes, it seems the ideal role for Angie Dickinson.
But Dickinson turned it down by telling Aaron, "you have too many ladies on that show already!" and requesting a special guest star salary above and beyond what they were willing to pay.

If you think, what happened to Barbara on The Colby’s is exactly what happened to Linda Gray on the Dallas reboot. At first the producers really only used her for her ties to the original show, really gave her no scenes with any meat, she was not a part of the main action, and a lot of her scenes got cut “for time.” It took fan backlash, and Ms. Gray going to the press with her dissatisfaction, to get her more integrated to the show.
Just some thoughts....
Genie Francis went through something similar. Often hired to capitalize on her Laura Spencer fame, forced into having to push for character to get something useful to do.
