Watching The Bold and the Beautiful from the beginning!

I have recently went back to watching and I am now in the middle of Caroline's rape trial and it's been so good.

I was never a big fan of trials at all, but this one is definitely one of my favorites. The acting in the courtroom scenes was off the charts. Joanna was such a credit to the early years of the show.

. I have no idea when Sally will actually show up, but I don't think it's for a good while yet.

Roughly about another year and a half from the point you’re currently at I believe.

During Caroline's trial, I believe we are seeing the wheels turn in Brooke's head regarding Ridge. She's shifting from just being Caroline's friend to being interested in Ridge. And Thorn and Brooke seem to both be teaming up so that Brooke can set her sights on Ridge, and Thorn can propose to Caroline.

Contrary to most I am a Brooke fan and I love seeing the character starting to take root. You can just see her starting to manipulate the situation to her liking yet simultaneously justifying her warped thinking to herself and that’s what I’ve always loved about her.

It was so well done, the questioning wasn't the normal soap bullshit, it was very uncomfortable to watch, and honestly like something you would see on a night time show. It was dark, and there was realism to it. I don't think even UK soaps would have used the language that was used here. And they are usually on later like after 7pm.

I remember loving Brooke when I saw the episodes in the mid '90s. Well I loved all the fighting between Brooke and Taylor over Ridge, but when I started watching the show again sometime in the 2010s I was shocked at how I didn't like Brooke and couldn't fathom all the things she'd done by then that I never saw transpire on screen. I loved that seeing the show from the beginning that we could see that Brooke was actually a good and decent person, but one that wanted a way out of her banal normal blue collar life. She had her head turned by the high life, and didn't want to make the mistake her mother had and let an opportunity go by. I love this inception of Brooke and it's all the shades of grey that make her into what she becomes in the later years. It starts to make sense.

it was very uncomfortable to watch, and honestly like something you would see on a night time show. It was dark, and there was realism to it. I don't think even UK soaps would have used the language that was used here. And they are usually on later like after 7pm.

I was kind of surprised myself at how much they got into such detail considering this was 1987. It was, well, it was Bold.

One of my all time favorites of daytime! She was so crazy and over the top and quite the opposite of all the other characters yet it somehow worked. Nothing beats a Sally-Stephanie daytime scene for me.

She had her head turned by the high life, and didn't want to make the mistake her mother had and let an opportunity go by. I love this inception of Brooke and it's all the shades of grey that make her into what she becomes in the later years. It starts to make sense.

She’s always been quite the polarizing character for me. I can’t believe some of the things she’s done yet I just can’t dislike her. She was so entertaining doing all those things and really did so many of them tongue in cheek that she just became so likable in my opinion. And I totally agree with you that going back and watch the early years gave me a whole new outlook on her motivation. Desperate? Delusional? Cunning? Sure, she’s all of that but now I see why. She wasn’t going to just stay in the valley and let life pass her by without going after what she wanted. I have to respect that.

Well I have been continuing to watch, I am now on episode 213, which is nearing the end of the first year I guess. They say season, but I don't think daytime soaps ever really did call them seasons.
There is so much going on, Brooke's mother Beth has breast cancer and is going to have a mastectomy all the while still being entangled in an affair with Eric. Stephanie has been wrecking her brain trying to find out who this other woman is, at the same time visiting with Beth in the hospital, trying to comfort her with telling her of how her own mother's mastectomy saved her and lead to have a normal healthy life after the surgery.
Meanwhile, Stephanie has become somewhat involved with the man she has hired to romance her daughter Kristen, Clark Garrison. He seems to be in love with Stephanie, all while trying to convince Kristen to get him work at Forrester Creations. So now Stephanie is trying to find out who Eric is in love with, and Kristen is trying to work out who Clark is in love with. During all this Brooke is aware of her mother and Eric's meetings and past relationship in college. And Beth had been aware of Brooke's designs on Ridge, her best friend's ex... Awfully tangled webs!

Caroline and Thorn have married and are now living in a suite that the Forrester's have created for them at the mansion, which is kinda strange, especially for Ridge, who still likes to perv a bit at Caroline. Doing that Ridge glassy eyed almost mid-orgasm stare off into the distance that is his personal trademark soap acting move, like Joey Tribbiani's smell the fart acting.
Ridge and Brooke are now a thing, and had gone off to stay at Big Bear at the Forrester's cabin over Christmas, which I do remember from the '90s episodes. Sadly Thorn and Caroline also decided it would be good to head up there for a few days, and in the middle of a snow storm. They walked in on Brooke and Ridge canoodling in long johns drinking brandy by the fireplace. And both couples got stranded there with just one bedroom. The girls took the bedroom and left the boys to the couch.

Donna Logan's overly gorgeous boyfriend Mark is now gone after she came home to find him in bed with another girl. And now it seems that they are just making Katie and Rocco's relationship disappear. Or it just feels that way. They had Donna and Rocco kiss, and Katie found out and then Katie and Donna weren't speaking but they have made up. And now it just seems like Katie and Rocco don't really have a relationship, and they keep showing Donna and Rocco. I don't know what's happening with that.
Rocco's fetching fashions are catching the eye of Ridge at Forrester Creations and he's into the idea of designing a collection of similar stuff.
Rocco looks like a mix of a white Michael Jackson circa Bad era and all of Duran Duran. I'm not gonna lie... I'm kinda into it.

I can't believe I am near the end of the first year already. I have about 30 episodes left until I am into 1988.

You’re at the apex of the show as far as I’m concerned. I still consider that first “season” to be the best and it remains my personal favorite. So many great moments and stories and shocking revelations.

I always used to want this to become an hour show but in retrospect it’s best they didn’t do it. The half hour format was perfect and always was just enough to hook the viewers and keep bringing them back without overdoing it.

I'm 33 episodes into the second year now and, a lot has been going on. Stephanie has hired a private investigator to track down Stephen Logan, Beth's husband who ran out on her. They find him in Arizona and Stephanie leaves details of his whereabouts for Brooke. Who then travels to see him in Arizona. He initially doesn't want to return, but has just been convinced to do so by Donna. Donna is bringing him back as she has no idea about Eric and Beth and thinks Beth will be overjoyed to have her deserting husband back!
Stephanie is hoping his return will ruin Beth and Eric's plans to marry.

Meanwhile Brooke knows about Beth and Eric's relationship, and has explained to Ridge the reason that Beth's having Stephen declared legally dead so she can marry a new man in her life. Nobody else knows that this new man is Eric, Ridge's father.
Brooke and Ridge being officially a couple is causing animosity between Caroline and Brooke, and also more than a little antagonising with Ridge and Thorne.

Kristen's new man the schemer from Spectra Fashions, Clark has had his weird convertible dress, that he had Kristen pretend to design was approved by Eric as the show stopper of his fashion show. And... The dress is a hit, a best seller. And with that Clark goes to Eric and tells him he's responsible for the design and asks for a job at Forrester Creations. Eric is furious at both Clark and Kristen and also, I would say, a little humiliated.

Caroline has been given a job as an editor for a new magazine being launched by Spencer Publications. I forget the name of it, maybe it's called Look Magazine? Any way its a fashion magazine and she's busy doing high fashion '80s office woman stuff. It's fabulous!
When I watched the show again briefly around 2010-20014, on and off Spencer Publications was still there I think. With Bill Spencer, but I have no idea who Bill Spencer is in relation to Caroline? Maybe a long lost brother? Wow... Along with a long lost twin sister? That's a lot.

I think the set for Caroline's office was the same basic components, or layout as the one that I saw later in those sort of recent episodes I watched. Obviously much redressed and not '80s pastels. It was much more slick and masculine, but the doors, windows and basic set seemed exactly the same.
It's crazy that those sets are still basically the same almost 40 years later. Even Eric's office at Forrester!

One of my favorite times on the show. So many terrific storylines going on at once and they all seem to intertwine just about every character at some point. To me the show was always at its best when we had the Logans and Forresters battling each other.

Was it Eye On Fashion? Or was it Ion? I think that was it, which I always figured was a wink and a nod to CBS. I loved the idea of Caroline going and work for her dad. They were such opposites in their outlooks on life and always battling, yet always remained so close and would do just about anything for one another despite their differences. Their relationship was so realistic to me.

Granted with much lower budgets now the sets appear a lot smaller in recent years but yes, they do usually look pretty similar after all these years. I like that as well. It gives the show a good sense of history and consistency.

This has all just happened the week Beth and Eric were about to buy a mansion to live in and she was having her husband declared dead. It's playing out in such a deliciously complicated way. It's perfect soap opera. Now the Logan's all know that Beth is seeing Eric, just when their father has returned.

Clarke was offered a job at Forrester after refused a pay out for his design, and said Eric could keep it with no claim to it.

Now I don't know if I have mentioned this, but for a very long time Stephanie has been going somewhere at a certain day, at a certain time, every week. At times people have called to see her and the maid has always to explain she's not there and she doesn't know where she is. I think Kristen noticed this, but hasn't brought it up. Now Thorne has started to notice and Ridge has just shrugged it off. Ridge and Stephanie seem to have a closer bond than the other siblings. I am wondering does he know where she goes.

I have been thinking maybe she has a sick relative or even a child that is in a hospital or something, or an asylum. That's just where my Soap intoxicated brain takes me.

It was perfectly written. Stephanie’s desperation to get rid of Beth would’ve led her her to do just about anything, even hire a private investigator to bring back her ex-husband. Does it get any better than that? I have to admire that on some level. Susan is amazing in those scenes!

I was never a fan of Clarke for some reason. I just couldn’t warm up to him, and I always found he and Kristen kind of bland together. But Clarke is an important character. He’s an excellent schemer and a wiz at playing both sides.

Yes, the “Stephanie has a Secret” storyline. That’s about to take off soon. Get the popcorn ready for that one. It’s a long one but I think you’ll enjoy it.

Just watched uber creep Ridge do something just really bad. He somehow thinks it would be a good idea to take advantage of a drunken Caroline and climb into her bed while her husband, his brother Thorne is not in the room. She starts kissing him in the dark thinking it's Thorne! All while Thorne is downstairs making a sandwich. In what way is that even a funny prank? He's actual scum! Ridge is just the worst! He's the ultimate F**k boy. He's stringing Brooke along refusing to actually commit to anything serious, all while trying annoy Thorne and antagonise Caroline.

EDIT - Oh, no, its even worse! Not only did they kiss, but Ridge actually took full advantage of Caroline's drunken state and they actually had sex. Which is rape or at least sexual assault? I really don't know how I feel about this story, especially as Caroline just had a rape storyline that really very well done. The next morning Caroline wakes up and thinks he and Thorne made love, and he laughs and tells her she really was drunk, they didn't. And then we see Ridge in his bathroom with scratches on his back and regretting what he'd done.

Caroline seems to know something happened, this is all too icky.

Meanwhile now that Stephen Logan is back, and has been given a job at Spencer Publications, partly due to Caroline wanting to help out the family, no knowing Beth is secretly seeing her father in law. And partly due to Stephanie asking Bill Spencer to give Stephen a job so that he will be in a position to support his family and offer Beth something more than she had before. Thus giving Stephanie a chance to keep Eric.
Stephen is played by a very dull actor. I find him really boring, but I am loving how complicated this all is.

Stephanie and Brooke have had some electric scenes fighting it out over Ridge and Eric and their relationships. Susan Flannery is such a great actress in these scenes the way she just explodes in pure rage. Really showing a woman determined to do anything to save her marriage.

I also have noticed a few strange character changes in this second year. Margot goes from being someone who really does like Kristen, and takes her under her wing at Forrester Creations to someone that is actually quite mean about her and is sneaking around with Clarke behind her back. It goes against how she was was previously.

There has also been less animosity and friction between Stephanie and Kristen and they seem to have dropped the weird unsettling dynamic they had between them and now have Stephanie more protective and involved with Kristen.

Nobody can pull strings like Steph. You can just feel her desperation during this entire storyline as she feels time is running out. It doesn’t even matter to her that Eric seems no longer interested in saving their marriage. She has to do what she has to do to salvage it regardless.

Susan and KKL always played off of one another very well. The hatred and bitterness always looked so real. To me the show was always at its best when they were at each other’s throats.

I always liked Margo but somehow she came off as being written a little too inconsistently at times. I always got the impression they weren’t quite sure what to do with her. A great character, but too often in the background when I felt she should be front and center. Her loyalties quite often changed rather quickly too. It wasn’t always easy to figure out where she was coming from, but maybe that was part of her appeal.

There has also been less animosity and friction between Stephanie and Kristen and they seem to have dropped the weird unsettling dynamic they had between them and now have Stephanie more protective and involved with Kristen.

I liked it better when they were more antagonist towards one another. I thought their animosity made Kristen more interesting in those early years.

Well I am blazing through this second year. I am well over 100 episodes in to 1988 now. So much is going on! We finally have got to the bottom of this Stephanie goes somewhere every week at a certain time thing. I was almost spot on! So Stephanie and Eric had miscarriage after Thorne was born I think? Only the didn't, Stephanie gave birth to a daughter prematurely, who had a severe birth defect/condition. She named the baby Angela and the baby wasn't supposed to survive more than a few days. However she did, although she had severe developmental impairment and was unable to communicate in any way. She couldn't walk, or sit up by herself or fed herself or speak, etc. So Stephanie decided to keep this from Eric as he was building his company at that time. She spent a fortune having Angela cared for by a doctor, bought a house for her to live in, had her taken care of and visited her every week, looking after her.

This plot all comes to climax when Eric and Ridge hire an investigator to track where Stephanie is going. Eric suspects she's having an affair with the doctor who lives at the house. It's only when he drags Stephanie to the house that he discovers the truth. It's all very gripping, and Susan Flannery acts herself off the screen. It's so soapy and good, although the storyline does stretch the limits of plausibility to the extreme! I'm fine with that, I don't come to this show for is depiction of reality.

At first Eric is angry at what Stephanie has done, later with Beth, it's she that points out to him the great sacrifice that Stephanie has made for him. They are as I type, on speaking terms, but Eric still wants a divorce and has moved out of the mansion,

One out, one in! Brooke has moved in with Ridge, much to Stephanie's annoyance. The Forrester kids have all met their new sister Angela and are shocked to say the least.
Kristen has married Clarke, they eloped to Vegas. Clarke had been sleeping with Margot, and now she's pregnant with his baby and livid that he's married to Kristen. Kristen and Ridge keep mentioning to Margot how she's not herself lately.... She is, she just has someone else living inside her at the minute.

Donna has done a nudey shoot in a trash magazine, that's secretly owned and distributed by Bill Spencer! The guy Donna was dating, the agent guy that got her the modelling work has actually fallen in love with her and tried to get Bill to not use the pics. He's angry that he's dating the talent, and so runs the pics anyway.
In a desperate attempt to hide the shoot, Donna's new guy buys all the copies of the magazine he can. Bill finds it strange that the magazine is such a best seller and smells a rat, he knows what's happened so he orders another bigger print and run of the magazine.

I don't get this side of Bill as a hateful vindictive bastard who runs a porn empire? It seems like a stretch...

Anyways, I am going back for a few more episodes.

It is very far fetched indeed! For someone to keep a child secret for that long from her entire family does take some suspension of disbelief. But overall I do agree with you that these weren’t reality shows. It’s 1988 and this was what we loved to watch regardless of its silliness at times.

One footnote to this whole thing that I always found interesting was the mysterious phone call Steph gets very early on in that first season. She tells the caller something to the effect of “I told you never to call this number.” It’s never followed up on. I’m not sure if you remember that now but I’m assuming that caller was Todd (the doctor).

My point is that storyline was being planned from the very beginning. The long term planning back then that was put into these storylines is amazing!

Kristen has married Clarke, they eloped to Vegas. Clarke had been sleeping with Margot, and now she's pregnant with his baby and livid that he's married to Kristen. Kristen and Ridge keep mentioning to Margot how she's not herself lately.... She is, she just has someone else living inside her at the minute.

Personally I don’t know what anyone ever saw in Clarke, especially two women like Kristen and Margot that could basically get anyone they wanted. This was never one of my favorite storylines to be honest.

Bill was actually my favorite character from the very beginning. However, I feel at this time he was getting lost in the shuffle and wasn’t being utilized properly. Putting him in a storyline with Donna and her boyfriend that worked for him over naked photos seemed a little beneath Bill to me. I preferred him being the thorn in the side of the Forresters and butting heads with Caroline. That’s where I thought he was at his best.

Anyways, I am going back for a few more episodes.

Keep watching! I’m enjoying your reactions as we go. In my opinion this was the very best era of the show.

A Dutch TV channel started broadcasting the first season (1987) of "The Bold and The Beautiful" this week, they are broadcasting two episodes in a row, right after broadcasting the latest episode of "The Bold", but i didn't knew until Wednesday that they started to beoadcast the older episode of "The Bold", but I was luckily to watch the other episodes later again, and I must say that I am enjoying watching them all over again, I hope they continue like this for a while because the first 20-25 seasons of "The Bold and The Beautiful" were my favorite era of "The Bold" and I missed quite a lot of episdoe after season 10 (year 1997).

But i notich they now also put the early years on Youtube, so it's very tempting to watch more episodes on Youtube instead of watching "The Bold" on tv.

I am still watching along too. I did a binge of about 6 episodes to get caught up last night. I have already seen the first 100 I think, so looking forward to getting to that part, then it's all new to me. I love the weird dynamic between Stephanie and Kristen. It's so strange and unique but I wonder if it will carry through the series like this.
I hate Katie and Roco's whole thing. It's really cringey and I don't get how her having a mild case of teenage acne is worthy of this amount of screen time. Most kids get spots, it's not the end of the world and you don't shrivel up and die if you don't go on a date at 15. Life hasn't even started yet.

I haven't posted much about these episodes as this is my 3rd time seeing them now. I love what I am seeing but eager to get on to the ones I haven't seen.

I like the Katie and Rocco storyline and her acne problem is something many teenagers struggle with like me when i was a teenager, so it's close to reality, and i remember there was something going on with Donna meeting a bad guy called Mark but i'm not sure i only remmeber his sexy dark deep voice.

I'm not following the new episodes of "The Bold" because it's too big of a jump from where I stopped watching "The Bold" to where "The Bold" has being now, so I'd rather just watch the old episodes now and I don't know yet how far I will watch the older episide, it depends on how long the tv-channel plans to broadcast the older seasons, but I have also missed a lot of older episodes because "The Bold" was often moved to different times and to a different channels, but I would certainly like to see the first 10 to 15 seasons again or maybe to the end of Stephanie's death.

For those who are watching B&B again from the beginning: when do you think you'll stop watching?

I’ve been asking myself the same question and to be honest I’m really not sure when I’ll stop. I’m in 1995 right now and it’s not exactly my favorite time on the show. I really enjoyed it up until about 1991 but the last few years have felt kind of mediocre. Perhaps it’s me and my patience isn’t what it used to be for these shows but I will definitely keep on watching for now.

I think you might be right with this statement. I really can’t bring myself to watch the current show regularly anymore. I prefer the older episodes as I enjoy getting lost in the nostalgia for 20 minutes a day.

Is there any storyline that you already know you won't watch for a second time?

I’ve never liked finding out Ridge wasn’t Eric’s son. I’m not looking forward to that one in a few years but let’s see how I feel by that time. I’m also not looking forward to Amber a second time.

Or will you say in a few years when there are repeats of the 2024 episodes: Why didn't I watch these episodes when they originally aired, because they're just great!

Stranger things have happened but I think it’s highly unlikely I’ll ever feel this way. I just can’t bring myself to watch a current episode anymore but that’s just my opinion, of course. I know people that still watch and I think that’s terrific. I admire that kind of loyalty when it comes to TV viewership. I have it with other shows I grew up watching but unfortunately this isn’t one of them.
