Since I haven't watched but up to like 12 episodes into Season 9, I can only comment on the characters during those nine seasons.

Well, I personally liked Chip, Ciji, and Joshua. Cathy came on strong, but she became rather bland rather fast (to me, anyhow). Aside from her relationship with Joshua (which was actually a favorite storyline of mine), she really didn't do a whole lot. She just sang... and sang some more. They just didn't know what to do with her anymore... she was long out of the picture (sort of) before she was ever really gone.

Chip did get a little on my nerves, I will admit that.

The one I absolutely could not stand was Diana! No matter who she was involved with or what she said or did, I didn't like her. She was on my nerves before I ever finished Season 1... and to think I had to put up with her till Season 6!

YES. Diana did get on my nerves. She was that little girl that never grew up. Always running to Abby. I am on episode 5. This is when she defends Chip and Lillie Mae runs him down :spinning:.

Oh, definitely Diana.
Cathy. I really hate her singing. Plus, what else did she do besides sing and look fretful?
Olivia and her constant whining.
Lillimae after Joshua died.

I'm only on Season 7 of my rewatch, so I'm sure I can add to this later on.

Easily Diana, who was always unappealing. Her value is that her existence produced brilliant storylines for seasons four and half of five with Chip Roberts, but once he's in the grave, there's no reason to have her around. Plus, there's just something fundamentally unappealing about the character, about having to look at her, about how she acts, the way she speaks. Claudia Lonow is a super duper nice and very funny person in real life, but something about the Diana character was just impossible to take.

Danny is the only one I think ran beyond his expiration.

Are you kidding me? Queen Diana didn't live out her welcome. In all honesty, by the time she left I was eagerly waiting for her next storyline. She was in a great spot character wise post chip. She was the show's young ingenue and should've been treated as such. If I was the writer she definitely would have dated joshua, did drugs instead of Olivia and rival Paige for Peter's affections.

It's cool you guys hated her but she joins Laura, Ginger and Patricia as underutilized characters on this show who was never given their time in the sun to shine. IMO humble opinion.

I'm not sure if Diana was underutilized, and I don't think she outstayed her welcome.
But I think the timing for her departure was right, and I like the way it ended between her and Karen because it was both a reconciliation and an impasse.

I loved her as the un-likeable and somewhat unappealing adolescent, and she had the most potential for character development (but they also did a great job with Paige).

If Knots Landing returns, I want to see Diana and Paula running a business together.

Lilimae, I guess. I thought she was overutilized for a while. But then they went in the opposite direction and completely got rid of her. I wonder why she didn't return as recurring instead of Betsy Palmer as Aunt Ginny? Clearly she served the same purpose.

You're absolutely right, both Lilimae and Ginny served the same purpose ... they were Val's confidant/sounding board. While she was close to both Karen and Laura, Val was a little more introverted and, at times, lacked self-esteem. While Abby seemed to thrive on solitude and only needed a man around for sex (and money), and while Karen had Sid (and later Mack) and Laura had Greg, Val was bit needier and co-dependent.

I think that after Julie Harris was written off (and continued working steadily, thus being unavailable to return) the showrunne's realized Val needed a confidant (still) and they were determined to give her one however they could.

While I absolutely loved Betsy Palmer, I took issue with the way the writers "shoe horned" Ginny into Val's backstory as being Lilimae's never-before-mentioned sister. We already knew from the early years of KL that Lilimae had two older sisters, June and Rosalie. Virginia (Ginny) was never mentioned.

With the fraternal side of Val's family tree being totally unexplored, I thought it would have made more sense to have Ginny be her father's sister, not Lilimae's.

Danny Waleska
Olivia Cunningham
Harold Dyer
Ted Melcher
Johnny Rourke - easily my least favourite character
Ben Gibson - one of my favourite characters, but they ruined him with the Jean Hackney storyline
Lilimae Clements - after Joshua's death
Paula Vertosick - completely boring
