Also, episodes like these are often made as "Emmy Fodder"--episodes produced with an eye toward submitting them for later Emmy consideration. It's easier for the Emmy judges to understand an episode that is self-contained rather than watching an episode that is lifted from a continuing storyline (since they likely aren't watching the show regularly and would just be confused). It's also well known (if a bit odd) that comedies tend to submit more "dramatic" episodes, and dramas submit episodes that are more comedic. Perhaps this is to make themselves stand out a bit more in the judging.

Sadly, this is probably true.

Also, didn't Donna refuse the soap title of Knots in favour of "it was a night time draaamaaa" at one point? Rude.

That's the way I remember it. A sort of self-contained comedy episode.

From a dramatic standpoint, I assume this episode (Birds Do It) was something of a palate cleanser. After all the heavy drama of the "Jill's death" mystery, it would be difficult to segue directly into other plotlines, so they took something of a break with a change-of-pace, self-contained episode. Going from high-stakes drama to farce/comedy--and using the same characters--is a risky operation, which might be why it's so jarring to see the cast switch gears this way. But the switch, even for just one episode, helps the writers begin a new era of storytelling in the next episode (back to the drama!) without the events of Jill's exit story having to be referred to any more. They did something similar with the farcical/comical "Love In" that was dropped into the period right after Laura announced her departure/impending death.

TBH, it's kind of like a long term marriage: Every once in a while, you need a recharge, a reminder why you're together in the first place, and that's what this episode did for KL. When Michelle says, "If the sex was any better..." and Mack says, "I'd be a dead man!" it's exactly the kind of recharge every marriage - and series - needs. And in the end (and beginning) what is KL but Scenes from a Marriage?

I recall the Birds do it episode.. and the most memorable scene was Karen showing up in a teddy in Mac's office and his clients walking in while she was in a sexy pose. It was nice to see Karen get a comeuppance of sorts every once in awhile

It's in season 10, basically the episode right after they figure out that Jill killed herself (which isn't true, but that's another thread) and suddenly there's this random episode that's about SEX, BABY. No really, it's about sex, married couples and Ann Landers. It's horrible and possibly the lowest point so far from what I've seen. It's Dynasty Valez worthy.
