He went off to that car and tried to start it to get away. Claudia helped him. He said it was an emergency. He wanted to get away and get the money once they all died.

Hank was about to get busted as a fraud so it made sense he'd try to get away though.

He might be a crook, but would he really be that lethal?

Perhaps it was Michael's mother, Luella Culhane, somehow learning about the Carrington's involvement that lead to her husband's death.

He cut off his finger, I think that's a little insane.
But when he left the estate his only crime was attempted fraud, he hadn't taken anything from the Carringtons yet.
If he started the fire for the money, i.e. being the only heir of the Carrington fortune then he had to be sure that the people who knew about the scheme (Cristal and Alexis) would die, but Alexis was going to handle the results of the DNA test.
He wasn't officially/publicly acknowledged as Blake's son yet, so Carrington-Atlanta and whoever it is who'd manage the Carrington inheritance (The Colbys?) may want to request some further proof. He wouldn't be the first long-lost heir returning to claim "his" fortune.
But even if all that stuff is irrelevant and he could claim his inheritance just-like-that, then there's still the question: why did Blake's son, and the brother of the groom, flee the scene just before or during the fire?

So if he did it, but not for the money then it was extremely cruel - was he that kind of person?
If he did it for the money then I think the plan is a little shaky.
Regardless, if Hank dunit then I think it would have been better to show it, and give us that extra instant kick that all of this is partially Alexis' fault. And does anyone think he's going to return after this?
The writers wanted to create a mystery, but they must have known that the fans would figure it out. Well actually it's kinda obvious, too obvious. Suddenly I'm not so sure anymore.

There was no build-up to this whodunit, none of the other characters have very strong motives so I think they're going to bedazzle us with a complete new angle. The question is: whose angle?

Ted Dinard is a suspect as well. If he's better now. He got upset and saw the Steven was getting married to Sam. But if it's someone from this episode, then Hank.

I'm thinking Ted or Ted's father. The character of Ted was very much a part of the first season and cliffhanger (court) in original Dynasty. I think it's weird for him to not be somehow linked to the end of NuDynasty's season 1 especially considering what transpired with him earlier in the season.

Revenge is a dish best served cold...
SHE did it.

I've not watched this episode.... Is there any reason to believe that the person who started the fire is the same person who locked them in?

Not really, no. I mean Alexis locked Cristle in (and then Claudia shot her). Culhane saved them. Alexis then ran upstairs with Culhane following her, going to save Cristal. Steven's last scene was trying to break out of a window with flames licking all over the place.

In theory there could be two perps, unknown to eachother! A conspiracy, oooh...

So a mystery someone could have started the fire out of revenge, not anticipating that someone else would lock the others in a room.... Could Claudia have locked the others in the room but in her imagination was locking Matt in the closet, because she was very specifically looking for Cristal and didn't want anyone to interfere? Meanwhile, ....

Why isn't Trampy Ho an option?

Remember: when all else fails, always blame Trampy Ho!

Because there isn't a Trampy Ho on this show. There was one on the *original* show, but the new show has a gay guy named Sam, who's mostly been pretty faithful to Steven.

Plus, Sam was in the room when they were locked in.

I just got a theory on who the fire-starter could be. You know how the person who threw the lamp had on a white glove and a black sleeve? After watching this vid, I realized several of the servers had white gloves and black sleeves... and there was even a moment where Anders was instructing them about keeping the lamps fueled and placed all around.

("Complete chaos" indeed, Anders. ^^)

But could the perpetrator have been one of the servers? If so, what would the motive be? Were they someone in disguise... or were they hired to assassinate the Carringtons, but in a way that would look like a plausible accident? Course I could be reading too much into it, but still...

Ok, so it wasn't Claudia who jammed the door as she was already with Cristal before the others went into the room to have the wedding photo taken. The change in photo venue was last minute; so either the fire-starter was someone who knew that and did jam the door with the screwdriver (why that and not a padlock?) or else the fire-starter didn't know/didn't expect the family to be around. If the latter, then there was yet another person with an agenda.

@Ked.... the black sleeve with white glove starting the fire with a lit lamp reminds me of the series Gran Hotel. At the start, the hotel migrated from fuel lamps to electric bulbs, and it was an occasion for something bloody to happen. Light bulbs became a focal point for bad stuff happening, to the point I got jittery just seeing a light bulb touched.

Edited to add: Cristal being locked up, the shooting there plus the case of mistaken identity also remind me of Gran Hotel. I know O.Dynasty had its fires, but Gran Hotel had one too, with someone being rescued, similar to Michael rushing in to get Fallon. Gran Hotel also had the story of a missing finger. Gran Hotel was a grandmaster at intercutting scenes. Eg, wedding there, lightbulb tragedy here. Hotel there, cave cell drama here. We never learnt how someone could enter a bathroom and scrawl a message on a fogged up mirror then leave, all without being heard by the woman dozing in the bathtub!

I think the only servants who got some screen time are Hilda Gunnerson and Alexis' Uber-guy/bodyguard Mickey (whom I still consider a candidate for the real Adam).

The screwdriver speaks to the "last-minute change of plans" nature of the action, since the venue got changed. My main issue is...why are all these rooms fitted with hardware so they could be locked from the outside?

To your main issue: to maintain the rustic look of the stables?

To the use of the screwdriver…. That’s it, precisely. The door wasn’t locked. It was ‘latched’ by the screwdriver. The door’s handle/knob mechanism should have been working fine. Looked to be working fine. The door wasn’t stuck. It rattled in its frame because it wouldn’t budge open. Why did Fallon say it was locked? Bright child that she is, could she really not tell the difference? Michael didn’t even have to touch it. Blake kicked the door and it rattled so hard, the screwdriver fell out, like they were meant to be able to escape, but not too soon to prevent the fire from taking hold of the property. …..Once Fallon learnt of Liam’s rich family/uncle, did she quickly scheme with an accomplice to start from scratch – the oil lamps were conveniently available – but the Cristal complication made her scheme more deadly than she anticipated, hence her muted OMG?

Yeah, but there's the classic trick with the chair under the door knob and I never understood how it would prevent anyone from opening those doors.

Anyway, I really enjoy all the great detective work here. It's hard to pick a favourite culprit but I really love Zable's theory.
