By Season Four, Jock Was Starting To Lose His Grip On The Family.

I’ve always felt that both “Jock” and Wyatt/Wes were impostors, and the real Jock was Chico Steve the helicopter pilot. Note how we conveniently never saw Steve’s x-rays or polygraph test!

That's because when Jock's teeth flew out the window, so did Chico Steve! ;)

I certainly don't think Jock was losing his grip on the family, if anything some of his family were losing it.

This season saw the aftermath of JR's shooting, with Bobby stepping in to run Ewing Oil suggested by Miss Ellie to Jock to stop Bobby and Pam from leaving Southfork. This didn't go down too well with JR. At least Ray married Donna although he had to deal with an unwelcome visitor.

Jock himself did have to deal with Ray's unwelcome Father Amos Krebbs when Amos revealed that he wasn't Ray's father at all, Jock was!

One of the best season's, all the more poignant because we sadly lost Jim Davis who succumbed to a cancer of the brain which he had been battling over the course of this season. May he sleep eternal with the Lord. I am so looking forward to watching his tenure on Dallas in high definition when Warner Bros. release the new Blu-ray collection this year.

the storylines with Jock after the first handful of episodes had an odd feeling as Jim got sicker and weaker.

He was still in good shape during the outdoor location shoots, but was already in decline in the early indoor set scenes. It’s noticeable in the Fourth Son episode if you look for it. He’s pretty normal in the scenes with Amos Krebbs and at Ray’s house, but less so in the indoor “welcome to the family, Ray” scene in the Southfork living room.

I feel like the “real power” speech is about the last time he could muster something like full strength. Even at that point, I couldn’t tell for sure, but he may have already been wearing a hairpiece.

He's definitely not wearing a hairpiece in the "real power" speech. That's his own hair, God Bless him.

Jim Davis is wearing the wig in these scenes when Bobby wants out of Ewing Oil.

Compare the wig to his real hair from the "real power" speech above.

I appreciate the response. Just my opinion, the family seemed to be more willing to challenge him in season four where they didn’t before.

The later episodes that season with Jim get a little tough to watch at times for me. It becomes so noticeable as he starts to sit down a lot more in his scenes and his voice starts to change. But he kept going, and what a courageous man. That’s what it meant to him and there’s definitely a lesson to be learned there.

The scene with Jock, Miss Ellie and Ray is good at the end of Season 4 DVD Episode 20, Jim's penultimate scene where Jock and Miss Ellie make up, and he's putting every last bit of acting energy into it as he can. That portrait was brilliant after his death. It gave Jock a huge presence still somehow. When Clayton was saying "It's still your house, Jock", I could almost hear Jock say "Well damn it, Clayton, take the thing down if it bothers you that much".

He was a lovely actor and really suited to the role of the Ewing patriarch.

There's only a few actors who may have come close to playing the role as good as Jim Davis. One of them who could've done it if given the opportunity would've been the late Steve Forrest. The Ben Stivers/Wes Parmalee storylines were edge of your seat viewing in the shows later seasons.

Forrest's performance showed us how much the character of Jock Ewing was missed on the show, as well as honouring the legacy begun by Jim Davis. My compliments and admiration to both of them. :)

I still believe if they were going to re-cast Jock, Buddy Epsen would have been the perfect choice. He had the same build, look and about the same age as Jim Davis.

Another example I just saw today. Miss Ellie tells Bobby “Good, you’re here. Now your daddy don’t have to eat dinner alone.” Then she tells him, “don’t wait up, I might be late.”

Again, that would have never happened in the earlier seasons.

Possibly this is the episode where Jim Davis as Jock says "Gawd damned old c*nt!" in a famous blooper from season four!

Regarding the circumstances if she's indeed meeting Matt Devlin to discuss the Takapa resort, Jim Davis's comment is fairly accurate!! ;)

It was very odd to see them on the outs that season. It was something different, and definitely entertaining, but I didn’t like seeing them at each others throats.

Especially after they had just got over their problems after Ellie’s mastectomy.

Ellie got secretive over the Takapa resort.

When she announced that they had blocked the resort to the family that's when Jock announced "I am Takapa!"

She was shocked that Jock was part of the development plans for the resort.

Bobby too was stuck in the middle between his parents because of his then post as a US Senator, on which of his parents to support as regards proceeding or not with the resort. At least he came up with a solution which allowed the development to continue but also preserved the land which Miss Ellie wanted to protect.

Good writing all round in season four, DVD count. This is one of my favourite seasons largely because of the terrific performances from Barbara Bel Geddes and Jim Davis. May both of them Rest In Peace.

Miss Ellie then used Takapa as a way of showing anger to Jock over Gary.

Bobby was a Texas senator (the senate in Austin), not a US senator (the senate in Washington DC). Dave Culver was a US senator for a lot of his time on the show.

Thanks for the corrections it's been a while since I've watched season four.

Well to be exact I've stopped watching my Dallas DVD collection because I want the show to feel fresh and new for when I take delivery of the new remastered Blu-ray. :)

I didn’t understand how this worked at the time either. I couldn’t understand why Bobby was always flying to Austin instead of Washington, yet Dave was always shuttling back and forth to DC and they were both senators. I didn’t figure this out til years later.
