Dallas To Get Remastered In HD

Taylor Bennett Jr.

Brian Kinney (real son of Wes Parmalee!)
more like Brian (Mc)Kinney, son of the dastardly saddletramp and thief Hutch McKinney and heretofore unknown half-brother of Pamela! The resemblance will be all too clear when we see the wibbly-wobbly sepia-toned flashback glimpses of Hutch on the new Dallas Blu-Ray Box Set in full glorious HD sometime in early-to-mid 2036.

Cease and desist!
There is one and only Parmalee!

That's what daddy used to say, a bit different "there is only one Parmalee!" but yes...:sigh:

No, Hutch McKinney isn't related to me. My mother is Garnett McGee-Parmalee, she met my father Wes Parmalee in Texas but moved to Pittsburgh where I grew up (her sister Gunilla McGee-Kinney and brother-in-law Jack Kinney were my foster parents). My mother Garnett had once an affair with Mr. Ray Krebbs. And she told me that @Luke_Krebbs_Ewing is neither a Krebbs nor a Ewing!

Luke is the son of Jenna Marchetta and some unknown sperm donor!!

A leak causes trouble for the Ewings.

That's correct. Rumour around Texas is: it came from a poor but athletic student named Peter Richards!!!

Not to nitpick @Garry but something looks a little off with the opening shot of Harv arriving at Southfork. It's not until we cut to the dining room scene everything looks razor sharp. Or do I need to make an appointment to have my eyesight checked?
Nothing wrong with your eyes! All the establishing shots on the remaster from Seasons 10-12 are sourced from the video master and upscaled. The original film reels for these shots are missing and probably binned.

I appreciate the remastering and the efforts that go into it. But one of the dangers is that while they're go going to great lengths to bring clarity to the old image, they can also lighten-up the image too much in the doing, basically washing it out.

Before and after remastering:

I still like the older version better -- it's more powerful, poignant and organic feeling.

The new version is sparklingly vivid, but isn't there a way to get both??

If the scene is seen simultaneously in the two versions, it really seems that the atmosphere changes. And Pam's dress also makes it very questionable.

But we should also think of a new user.

I think he will prefer the mastered version, as happened many years ago with the restoration of Michelangelo Buonarroti's Sistine Chapel in San Pietro (Rome). It is a pity that the restoration has canceled the eyes of some figures and the light/darkness of many details.

The Sistine Chapel is a good analogy, actually.

I love the new high-resolution remasters, but why should the variety of color and shading be compromised? Could they darken slightly and color regrade as they remaster??

Frankly, even Bradford May's gorgeous work seems a little pallid now.

I'm not ungrateful, but frustrated.

You have to remember the remaster is 90 percent from the original 35mm master prints and these are the way the episodes were supposed to look. Some episodes that were darker on the old duplicate prints are now lighter and a few old lighter episodes are now darker. It takes a bit of getting used to. But give me the remaster any day.

Useless Trivia: The original Dallas film reels were stored under a salt mine in Kansas along with the rest of the Warner archive. So deep down they'll even survive a nuclear attack.

Oh yes, those duplicates. :re: Sometimes the TV stations even used duplicates of the duplicates (!) that looked just horrible, far too bright or too dark and washed out, and those have nothing to do with the original intention of the cinematographer, with results often depending on good (or bad) luck.
What he had in mind, you can see only on the master prints, in many cases for the very first time, and thankfully those are used for the remaster. That is, how Dallas was intended to look in the first place, the way it was shot.

Oh that trivia will inspire @Snarky Oracle zillions of posts in the next 10 years... like, "Was Jacqueline actually alive and hidden in a salt mine in Kansas, planning to bottle nuclear energy and send it to the Tuscany Valley?"

Ok, Babylon 5 Bluray announced for December 5. Today's news.
If not now some happy news about Dallas for this year, then when?

Also, I haven't heard anything official from WB about Babylon 5 being remastered before this announcement. Anyone did? It just happened. Which makes me believe that Knost Landing could do the same. Just come all of a sudden. Overnight.
