Original Dynasty stuff that should be avoided?

When they rebooted Dark Shadows (from weekday, daytime soap of the 1960s to weekly, nighttime soap of 1991) they skipped the entire first year or so just to get to the point where Barnabas Collins entered the story. In fact, the primetime DS reboot did a lot more right than it did wrong with the source material.

A ray of hope! :D

- this time they haven´t to change Steven from homo to bisexuell because of advertisers. They can let him be a happy gay man - with some problems of course.
- they can avoid a crying teenager called Lindsay - I think the whole Blaisdel / Lankershim stuff will not happen
- Will they show Blake´s darker side from the beginning or soften him knowing he will the good guy later?
- They can give Jeff a real family backround from the beginning if they use him on a long run like the original did.
- They can avoid a lot of storylines that went nowhere....

Hi Everyone! I'm new to posting. I have been watching this forum for a while now and I'm excited to say that I'm looking forward to this reboot. But here's what I'd like to see and what I think could make this really amazing;
* Fashion - First and foremost. Spelling and Cramer and La Shapiro talked about wardrobe. Ever since Sex and the City went off, we haven't had anything gorgeous to look at. This reboot needs to reinvent a trend or two and live up to its namesake in a big Pat Field kind of way. If Downton Abbey can copy us and merchandise their tea towels, we can sell faux furs or bed sheet sets or caviar tins.
* Don't be a joke - UFOs, Catfights, recasting actors, wedding shootouts are all in our past. Let them stay there.
* Meat - Let's see Steven kiss his boyfriend Ted or Luke. Let's see Sammy Jo's million dollar sex tape. I want to see "Sister Dearest" on the NYT Best Seller list as it probably should be. Teach me about renewable energy, not just oil shale extraction. Let's drill the largest oil reserves in the world, or fight Congress until they say we can.
* Bill Conti's theme
* For God's sake please give us Filoli again. Ever been? It's incredible
* Maybe we can have the same music to match the characters. Who can forget that sinister yet vampy song that sailed through the air when the camera panned up that famous apartment building to Alexis' penthouse in the early years? Bring back staples and signatures.
* Mark Jennings as an escort. Jeff Colby as a workaholic. Kirby Anders as another Fatal Attraction. Ted Dinard takes a swing and clocks Blake across the jaw before he is pushed to his death!
* And finally, something shocking to stake our claim on prime time soaps: Fallon or Adam drop a racial slur: maybe the N word, or something horrifying ala our Clown Republican nominee that would end up on the front page of the New York Post. Alexis calls Cristal a C U Next Tuesday. Make it bold and outstanding and we'll have the Dynasty we all really want.

Hi, welcome to the board. :)

I wanna say Gossip Girl brought a lot to the table fashion-wise, except I can barely remember anything that was worn. lol But then again, at the time when I was watching, I wasn't really into fashion. It was DYNASTY's OTP sequined shoulder-pads that alerted me to pay more attention to clothes. lol

Although MAD MEN and DOWNTON ABBEY had glorious clothes... but then again, those were period pieces. Course, they did spark a renewed interest in those old fashions, making them "vintage fashionable" or whatever its called now. I can never keep up, and don't really care to. XD

* Don't be a joke - UFOs, Catfights, recasting actors, wedding shootouts are all in our past. Let them stay there.

I... want... catfights.

Sorry dude, but that's the one thing I don't agree with you there. DYNASTY has spoiled me when it comes to catfights, and I've become extremely frustrated with the lack of them in other shows. Oh don't get me wrong, MAD MEN and DOWNTON ABBEY didn't need them, but they weren't the type of shows that called for them. But after shows like Gossip Girl and 90210 and how lame those catfights were... :frustration: I don't want this new DYNASTY to follow those namby-pamby fights, I want the huge blowouts that the original had - it's what got me interested in the show in the first place! :lmao:

Ahem, yeah.

However, I do think there should be a formulaic rule about them: slaps, slapfests, and small catfights (ie, 30 seconds) can take place at the beginning and middle of each season, with there being one big Grand Catfight that takes place towards the end of the season (like the studio fight, the lily pond fight, and the Carlton fight). The only exception could be if a Grand Catfight organically happens in the half-season cliffhanger (ie, like the attic catfight), only there would still need to be a catfight in the season finale. Just on a smaller scale (ie, the pool fight).

Why not?

* Bill Conti's theme

Hm, maybe...

* please give us Filoli again. Ever been? It's incredible

Maybe... I've never been, but I've seen plenty of clips of it. It is indeed a magnificent house. But I'd also like for Arden Villa to return as well (I WANT THAT LILY POND!).

* Maybe we can have the same music to match the characters. Who can forget that sinister yet vampy song that sailed through the air when the camera panned up that famous apartment building to Alexis' penthouse in the early years? Bring back staples and signatures.

Again, maybe. There's a limit on how much you can bring back from the original show. And these are going to be different actors in these roles, so hearing the original character themes with them might seem a little strange, even unfitting. ^^

* Mark Jennings as an escort. Jeff Colby as a workaholic. Kirby Anders as another Fatal Attraction. Ted Dinard takes a swing and clocks Blake across the jaw before he is pushed to his death!

Maybe. :D Maybe, doable. :) Hm, not too keen on that one... but certainly has possibilities (it depends on how its utilized). :) But YES to the one about Ted. If they do decide to bring the character of Ted back for the same purpose as before, then I say they should make him a more sleazy and violent character so Blake doesn't come out looking so bad when he accidentally kills him.

Hm, now that would be interesting. Perhaps. :)

- I love your post - every part of it! But one thing is a must have for a new DYNASTY: catfights. No catfights without reason -built them up - but we need catfights and Alexis has to wear hats....

If they keep Steven gay, then they can pair Sammy Jo with Adam. But all that stuff we discussed for years on the old forum was really aimed at the original cast. All those good ideas wont really apply. You need to see the first season to see if and what chemistry the cast has.

I don't know what's more shocking, this or a UFO.
All those good ideas wont really apply.
It would have worked much better with the original cast but still I'd love to see one of those what-if scenarios come true.

I think they should also avoid certain characters to outstay their welcome. Give Dominique one big explosive storyline and then let her go.

- or give them something important to do (kill, catfight or love somebody...) ;)

Yeah, I'd want Dominique to be around as a recurring character who comes around every so often just to stir up trouble for her own amusement. lol

On the original Dark Shadows they occasionally brought in short-term "psychics" to hold a séance or have some big plot revelation, then either kill off the psychic or send her away. In the reboot, they made Maggie Evans, a regular character, into the town psychic to give her a more regular reason to show up at Collinwood. They also had her carrying on a secret affair with Roger. They took Willie Loomis (a drifter/servant) and made him the nephew of Collinwood housekeeper Mrs. Johnson in the reboot in order to tie him more directly to the core. Reboots often allow writers to re-position supporting characters this way, and I'd expect them to do it with Dominique since there is that diversity push.

They can also take a certain plotline that works and give it to another, more popular character if they want the character to be more involved. In DS's case, they made Victoria rather than Maggie be the Josette lookalike, putting a totally different spin on the 1790s flashbacks. Keeping a plot but giving it to a different character will often result in that sort of "Butterfly Effect" on plots, but it's not like the producers plan a frame-by-frame remake of Dynasty; I'm sure they plan to take it in a different direction eventually where they only loosely follow the original's plots.

I like the wedding shootout scene they just have to do the follow up better. 1) the family being pulled away from the fight by guards so as to explain why so many lived, 2) spend more time trying to get out of the country for those that lived. I liked the finally but not the season premier. In fact in hs everyone watched the finally and it seemed no one watched the next season beyond even all of the 1st show.

Less camp, no catfights. Don't try to repeat, but try to fit in with what this new Golden era of television is about. Stay serious, don't create plots that make no sense. Make the writing the star, not people pushing each other around and grabbing wigs.

The tone is going to be VERY different from the first season of the original show. Just a hunch.
