I've had an epiphany. At least 70% of original DYNASTY was trash, so it doesn't matter if DYNASTY 2017 is trash too. In that regard, they'd be alike! BRING ON THE TRASH.

It's just that it turned into trash. This appears to be trash from the get go.

Didn't Dallas start off all camp and caricature? And then turned into something more serious and layered as time went on?

Of course, I realize that's some high level of wishful thinking that Dynasty 2017 does the same, but hey, we can't know for sure till we actually watch the series.

On a recent re-watch of Lorimar Dallas I never once thought that Dallas had started off as camp. No way in hell would Jock put up with that nonsense. He would have beaten the crap out of you. :lolo:

The original Dallas absolutely not. It had this awesome fly on the wall 70's realism feeling to it. If anything Dallas got more humourous and more camp with time.

Just shoot me. Shoot me right here and right now.

Hey, I never watched Dallas, aside from a few clips. All I know is that several times in the past, I read comments from people comparing how Dallas started off caricature-like, whereas Dynasty started off all serious, only for the two to switch as their seasons progressed. Pardon my ignorance if I was mistaken. ^^

Nono, Dallas has been a quite serious and good Drama for many seasons, that's why i extremly recommend it to you to watch it Ked (at least until Season 10)! But when Dynasty came along ... getting bigger and bigger ratings, somehow "infected" Dallas with the trash and camp. Falcon Crest got that virus as well at that time, only Knots Landing seemed to be mostly immune to that.
But Dallas imho was never good at camp, so it went down the crapper even faster and became that really bad drawn caricature of itself around the time Victoria Principal and Linda Gray left the show.
Dallas went from okay to good to excellent to camp to unwatchable caricature and truly ended itself in the trash bin.
Dynasty went from excellent to very good to highly enjoyable camp to crap and boring camp to finally getting excellent again at the end.
That's my take on the differences of these two shows.

Ah, that's what viewers dreaming an entire season was--"serious and good Drama." :giggle:

Dallas had some good seasons, you are right. Season 10 is pushing it. I'd say the first six seasons are good and consistent more or less.

That dream was season 9 already for Dallas. After 8 very, very good seasons.
Dynasty just had 2 or 3 good seasons, before crap and camp took over already.

I am always amazed by how many Dallas fans love to post on Dynasty forums about their favorite show. :)
Dynasty had some half seasons that were a mess, namely the first half of season six and the second half of season seven. In the peak seasons of its ratings (3-5) it redefined itself as a show about one-liners and fashion and style and one-dimensional characters, one where storyline coherence was a low priority, despite some interesting arcs (like Adam's and Amanda's with Dex). Based on many interviews I have read, that was a semi-conscious choice because while S2 did propel the show ratings-wise, it already undermined the foundation the Shapiros had created. After S2, conversations like the ones Fallon had in S1 about the sexism and racism at the upper echelon of DC no longer had a place, nor did Steven's and Claudia's soul-searching and Krystle's struggle with loving a man she increasingly recognized as ruthless. And the Pollocs were used to writing for daytime soaps, where characters never really grow and learn from their mistakes--they just spin around in circles, and that is what happened to the show's characters as well: Adam was evil, then he regrets what he does and turns good, then he turns evil again. (Come to think of it, not unlike Sue Ellen's "hey, I'm sober, no I'm not. I hate JR--no, I love him again" and Bobby's "I hate Ewing oil and dirty tricks--I'm out--no wait, I'm in and I'm gonna out-JR JR."). And so on and so forth. If one has never watched either show and sits down to binge watch them now, Dallas might be a better viewing experience as there are many seasons of a continuous thread. But at the time, even though Dynasty came second on the scene, it defined prime time soap on people's minds (which you allude to as well with its influence on other shows--even Dallas tried to stop looking so cheap). People can look at a trailer now and old episodes and proclaim "that's Dynasty" or " it's not." It became iconic. Dallas was too parochial stylistically to achieve that.

And i'm amazed how fast people jump to very wrong conclusions. :D
Would a Dallas-fan have a signature like mine?
I'm not that big of a Dallas-fan, my favourite show is (and always will be) Dynasty and the Colbys.
Many on here can confirm that after about 15 years of forum-life together.
My favourite Seasons of Dynasty are the good campy ones, 5, 6 and the first half of 7, but i also like seasons 2, 3 and 9, but obviously for other reasons than camp.

But i can be objective and reflective of both shows. And that's what i did above. ;)

Ah that explains it. No worries then. Also may I suggest you'll go to your local library and borrow Dallas on DVD?
You are in for a real treat if you have never watched that show. :)
It's quality TV from the 1980s just like Dynasty IMHO.

Yes I am a Dallas fan first and Dynasty fan second. But I am a fan of both shows and I do think they are both worth a watch and a re-watch... ;)

Dallas, until the ridiculous dream season, was very very good and even the first season post-dream was good.

I wouldn't call those seasons camp, especially the first season of Dallas. If anything, the main critiscism is that it's very episodic unlike Dynasty which started out as a serial from the get-go. If @Ked haven't seen it I recommend it.

Dallas was too parochial stylistically to achieve that.

My initial reaction upon reading that sentence was one of anger, but on reflection you are right. For a show (Dallas) to be mostly about the filthy rich Ewing family and more often than not rating its stetson hat off, Dynasty was the wake up call Dallas producers needed. Why it took so long is beyond me. Lorimar Productions must have been rolling in money with the worldwide success of Dallas. Though not as successful in other countries they also had Knots Landing and Falcon Crest in their stables.

I'll admit Dynasty had a huge influence with regards to fashion, its impact crept into other television series both prime-time and daytime and into the wider community. When people or the media reflect on the 80's it's Dynasty which tends to be referenced more so than Dallas.

Dallas of course will always remain my favourite. First and foremost it was about the characters. I felt connected to them as they struggled through their daily lives. I had the same reaction to Dynasty during Season 1, 2 and partially 3. But then something happened. It was no longer about the characters but what they were wearing and any excuse for Alexis and Krystle to have another catfight.

This week on Australia morning television there was a short interview with Joan Collins promoting her movie "The Time of Their Lives." Prior to the interview their was the usual intro of Joan's career and inevitably scenes from Dynasty sprang up. One of the ladies jumped on those scenes and said how good were those clothes.

Absolutely right. As flawed and disappointing as DYNASTY quickly became, the threat that it presented to DALLAS early on made the older serial better, I'm convinced. (For a while). To say nothing of eventually better dressed.

And I'm equally convinced that Victoria Principal's acting, which seem to awaken from its coma, as of Spring of 1982 (and never slipped again) was in response to all the Linda-and-Joan coverage that Season 2 of DYNASTY was getting, when DYNASTY was actually still good... I think Victoria looked at them and intelligently asked herself: 'What are they doing that I'm not?' And as a wily business decision, she made herself more focused, much more so, in front of the camera. (Sadly, Linda Evans did exactly the opposite).

So DALLAS learned from the competition, and DYNASTY seemed not to.

Dallas beginning in 1978 may not have helped either with its hangover of browns and bad fashion, men in particular with their bell bottom trousers - yikes :eck:

Hm, three recommendations. ^^ I don't know, I just have never been interested in Dallas. Nothing about it ever really intrigued me. However, it *is* one of the most iconic shows of all time, and it and Dynasty often do go hand-in-hand. So maybe I will... I'm just not sure if I'm up for getting involved in yet another 80s soap. Dynasty has already filled up a gigantic portion of my brain (which already has a TON of other shows in it), so I'm not sure if there's any room for Dallas.

Do you all recommend I watch the *entire* series, or would I be able to get away with watching only a few seasons? I personally would have watched Dynasty like that, skimming over some seasons and possibly skipping over the last half of season 7 and skimming over most of season 8 before settling down for season 9.

Dallas beginning in 1978 may not have helped either with its hangover of browns and bad fashion, men in particular with their bell bottom trousers - yikes :eck:

My brother-in-law was a kid in the 70s, and any time that era is brought up, he'll groan about how *ugly* everything was.
