Dallas To Get Remastered In HD

Yesterday from the Beatles

Homefront was the best of all David Jacobs' creations, better than Dallas and Knots Landing in terms of script and plot development. Obviously we all here are more ... 'in love' with Dallas for many other reasons.
4 me Knots Landing is the best! Forever and ever!

1st season of Homefront was quite good, but I lost my interest during its 2nd series. However, I would love to see it again in the best quality. Kyle Chandler is way too cute not to be seen properly! Then I might change my mind about that 2nd season.

P.S. I Never saw that western show from Jacobs, Paradise is called. Could be fun.

I think Knots Landing was his best idea. And if i'm not mistaken, that was his first idea anyway, before it was changed to the Dallas story, because TPTB thought the audience wasn't ready for KL yet.

ah but which of those two shows was the more popular!?!

It was this one! And this show continues to garner fans from far & wide who enjoy the continuing saga of Southfork Ranch! :)

I'm a little torn here. I must say, I just love ALL the prime time soaps from the 80s, even the short run ones like Flamingo Road and The Colbys.
But the thing i liked more on Knots than on Dallas was, that i could rely to the characters much more, as Michele Lee pointed it out, especially in the beginning they were just normal people that you could see, if you just look over your neighbours fence.
Southfork was much more separated, that extremly rich family lived all together in that relatively small ranch house that miraculously had twice as many rooms internally than externaly possible. That whole setting was just never believable to me, evan as a child back then. Dallas was much more "out there", away from all reality.
Of course that can be nice as well for a TV show, but i think it's just personal preference.

Dallas is our favorite show, and Jacobs has stated numerous times that he considers it a child given up for adoption. Knots Landing and Homefront are more mature and elaborate programs that Jacobs personally handled as an ever-present father.

In terms of being epic Dallas wins hands down.

Of course Knots Landing has it's fans, but if you're looking for a drama series which engages it's audience on a journey which is larger than life then Dallas is the better show. :)

How much of Knots Landing did you actually watch? Because the self contained episodes of early Knots is a quite different vibe to season 4 on wards when the show becomes fully serialized. So it's hard to make a judgement on what Knots Landing is like based on seasons 1-3. It's like the difference between Dallas season 1 and Dallas season 4. A very different feel. So you might find that if you jumped in a bit later on it might grab you in a way the early episodes didn't. It really gets a momentum in season 4 that is very dynamic and addictive.
It's just hard for me to imagine that a Dallas fan who really gave Knots a chance wouldn't end up loving it too. But granted, it does happen!

In interviews with Jacobs he makes it sound like he tossed off the Dallas pilot in a weekend as some obligation he had to get out of the way..

Thinking about that a bit it occurs to me that just about every good Dallas storyline and development I can think of up to a certain point followed naturally from the initial setup in the pilot script. (Romeo and Juliet, Cain and Abel, etc.) It’s only when they totally got away from that (basically, after Pam died and they treated it like no big deal) that it all fell apart..

From the moment Knots simply ignored that awful dream resolution and Bobbys return in the shower and just left Bobby dead it was clear to me, that KL simply had the much bigger balls. And the audience obviously rewarded that in the long run.

I think I watched Knots up to it's sixth or seventh season.

Dallas was always more engaging for me.

Sorry about that! :)

It's interesting to hear this. I remember seeing early episodes of Knots Landing but it was soon dropped by our local television network and I've never seen it since. How strange both Dallas and Knots Landing shared this common theme of self contained episodes yet when they both became serialized their popularity grew.

I will admit that I didn’t watch much of Knots Landing. I loved their theme though. Lol But from what I remember, KL played seemed like a daytime soap that just happened to air during the night. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but the basis of the show was about the daily lives of couples/families living in a community. Pretty much like a daytime soap.

Dallas instinctively appeals more than all similar programs because it is a concentration of universal and timeless archetypes:

Cain and Abel (JR and Bobby) and the treacherous sisters (Kristin, Katherine, Jessica, Michelle), Juliet and Romeo (Pam and Bobby) and Capuleti e Montecchi (Ewing vs Barnes faida), Anna Karenina (Sue Ellen), the bossy patriarch (Jock Ewing), the wise matriarch (Ellie Southworth), Lolita (Lucy Ewing), the black sheep (Gary Ewing), Donald Duck (Cliff Barnes), the thousand JR beautiful lovers, Old West and Oil (The Giant), Business World, the Land of the Ancestors (Gone with the Wind), Southfork Ranch and buffalo herd, Dallas and JFK, Annual Barbecue, Oil Baron Gala, Rodeo, Family Breakfast, Family Dinner, Jock's Painting, Miss Ellie's Sackclothes, Resurrection (Bobby Ewing ... and Garrison Soutworth, Jock Ewing, Dusty, Mark), etc.

you took it to the next level for sure, but the point stands.. the basic structure for the next handful of years (the best years, some would say) were established by the time JR took Pam out to see “Mama’s gardens, which just bloom like crazy in the springtime”. About 30 minutes in…

Some people come up with a “one hit wonder” early in their career.. they may go on to make several artistically successful alhums, films, paintings. novels.. but the one frivolous, throwaway early work was the one that got popular and survives to this day..

was that their finest moment of inspiration, their actual genius, even if it’s something they’d deny and discredit in perpetuity, or was it pure dumb luck and indiscriminate happenstance!

Cliff (Donald Duck) ... the loser, the coward, the ungrateful, the bitter, but sometimes the Winner, played masterfully by Ken Kercheval, a great actor.

I agree with you. The so-called 5-part miniseries (1978) was a masterpiece of drama and the presence of some archetypes played for the following seasons. The merit is due to David Jacobs and the wonderful actors of those first 5 episodes that entered the History of Television.

Don't know. Which one lasted longer? :p

Just because a show lasts longer doesn't mean it's better than a show with a shorter run.

Look at Return To Eden, that show had great potential but the TV series spun from the original mini series only lasted one series.

Dallas is the same, it might've ran for a long time but some of it's later seasons aren't as good as the series earlier in it's run. I can't really apply that to Knots Landing because I only watched it up to it's sixth or seventh series. I don't remember much about it anyway storyline wise. I was more into Dallas because it was more of an escapist drama than what Knot's was. That's why I love Dallas more, it was more larger than life. :)
