David Jacobs has passed away

The script looks a little better than the one they shot -- for one thing, Miss Ellie is a bit more saucy.
Well that would be interesting, a saucy Miss Ellie. And I take it that's not her chilli sauce?

ELLIE: "What a dirty business you Ewings are in."

JOCK: "That dirty business saved your precious ranch... this ranch... Don't you forget it, Miss Ellie."

ELLIE: "How can I? You remind me every day... "

How I would have loved to have seen this exchange in the pilot, Ellie slouched in that chair, editorializing in a mutter over her shoulder to Jock. I wonder if it was Katzman who nixed it.

I would've loved that too!

Again we have two different meanings for the same word. I think your American meaning for saucy is having or expressing in a bold, lively or spirited manner.
Here in the UK it means sexy, suggestive in a humorous way. I was somewhat confused.

Your version sounds most relevant for this (or I've got this totally wrong) Either way I bet, as you say, it was Katzman who would've changed it! (If that's what nixed means) :p

I think it can mean both here, too.

I do, too. He probably just didn't want Miss Ellie too assertive or candid even from the first episode.

Sad news - but what a legacy. To be the originator of a pop culture behemoth like ‘Dallas’ was an outstanding achievement. He was so unaffected when he discussed Dallas and made the construction of the show sound so straightforward and was sanguine in his assessment of its merits. A humble spirit with a huge talent.

His recycled project all those years ago bequeathed many happy memories to a boy in Scotland who would escape from the very real torments of his own family by spending time in the company of the Ewings. And my memories are forever.

What I find fascinating is that although David Jacobs created the show he didn't actually name it. The bible for the initial mini series was actually untitled. It was Jacob's writing partner Michael Filerman who submitted it under the title Dallas.

I'm not saying anything against Jacobs for that because obviously they were writing partners and Filerman actually said to Jacobs "Would you watch a show called Houston?" I think he had a point Dallas was a much better title, I think we can all agree on that.

God Bless David Jacobs and Michael Filerman.

I've had a good cry these past few days since the news broke about David Jacobs passing away. Yeah I know, I'm a soppy sod!

I've managed to order a photo of the man himself off eBay. The blurb on the back doesn't make any reference to Dallas though but rather to his other baby Knots Landing. Nevetheless I'm still looking forward to it coming.

I want to extend my condolences to the Jacobs family and his many friends and colleagues.

I've just been reading this obituary about David Jacobs from the Guardian and it mentions that he hated the revival series. It's not hard to guess why. That show was too far removed from what the original Dallas was.

Besides I recall that the new Producers didn't want David Jacobs involved with it and even tried to alter the Created by credit to suit themselves which is why David Jacobs challenged them and still got the credit but the new writer was credited under Developed By. They weren't fit to lick Jacobs boots as the original creator and writer of Dallas. I will always hold David Jacobs in high regard as the Father creator of one of the most beloved soap opera's of all time. Thank you Sir. :)

Well, I learned something new. John Pleshette who played Richard Avery on KNOTS LANDING was married to David Jacobs' ex-wife Lynn.

I'm sorry to hear about the death of David Jacobs. His creations provided much enjoyment, for millions. My condolences to David's family and friends. Eternal rest!

Pam is recovering after her heated discussion, with J.R. in the barn. She fell from the hayloft and sadly lost her baby. Naturally Ellie, Jock and Digger were looking forward to their first grandchild. Bobby is watching on as Jock takes a seat beside Pam who is in bed, (a scene from the mini-series; DVD-1, 1978):

"Little lady us Ewings are not an easy family to get on with, as you found out. We've had our own way for so long that maybe it stood in the way of us being just people. I know you have no reason to really care but I want to keep my family together."

David Jacobs was a creative genius.

Not only did he create Dallas but Knots Landing as well.

Katzman might've steered the Dallas ship during Dallas's hey day but I gather he was really miffed about Jacobs creating the show and wanted a hit show of his own.

I'm not really a fan of Knots Landing however even I know that David Jacobs guiding light kept that show grounded in reality much more that Leonard Katzman did on Dallas.

I want to take this opportunity to thank David Jacobs for creating both shows and changing the landscape of the soap opera genre during the 1980's. He was an original and deserves recognition for creating both of these iconic shows. Thank you Sir. :)

When Leonard Katzman did get to create a show himself like Jacobs had, he came up with Dangerous Curves (which was set in actual Dallas, and co-created with David Paulsen), but that show failed to be even as successful as Dallas was -certainly it doesn't seem to be remembered, given DVD releases or repeated on TV. (Was Dangerous Curves shown internationally to add?)

Didn't help either it was part of the Crimetime After Primetime block on CBS, which meant it was airing late night and which most CBS affiliates didn't carry I believe.

What a chilling thought.

Whenever I'm having a conversation about age, I'm the first to say if I wasn't born when I was, I may never have grown up watching Dallas and know it as I do!

I never missed an episode of Dallas back in the 1980's when I was a kid growing up.

I don't remember seeing the initial mini series or the first few series because I was born in 1969 however because my parents watched the show so did I too.

Now that they're both long since dead and I'll be 54 years old this year, I want to thank both of them for getting me hooked on such a brilliant TV show.

It was a big part of me growing up and I love it dearly. :)

I was born in the same year, not long had my birthday. I remember my older brother telling me I might like a new programme starting which was about a big rich American family. I was hooked from day one.
I was very young but as Mum & Dad owned a pub their evenings were busy and I used to pretend I was tucked up in bed nice & early.
Dallas probably wasn't really appropriate for viewers of my age, but I turned out OK (well I think I did).
