Does anyone else find Jenna Wade's weird obsession with Bobby out of place?

I want to love this character, but I just can't. I think it has more to do with I like Priscilla Presley, so I want to like Jenna. I just can't get over the low-key manipulative, self-serving side of the character that people ignore. Or may be it's that the writer's tried and failed to write that part of her character out of the story just a little too late.

I understand their back story, the being childhood sweethearts and all of that. BUT, Jenna originally left Bobby at the alter of what would have been their first wedding. She moved out of the country to get away from him (for reasons that are unclear). She was unwilling to marry Bobby, yet she married Renaldo shortly after arriving in Italy. Which are not the actions of a girl supposedly "in love".

For years, she manipulatively made Bobby believe there was a good chance he was the father of Charlie. She admitted to being in a relationship with a married man (Maynard Anderson) so he would pay her bills. Basically she was a 'kept woman'. Not to mention, after that, she had Bobby paying her bills and setting her up in an apartment (Morgan Fairchild). It seems to me, she knows that because of their past, Bobby struggles with how he feels about her and she uses that to her advantage (Francine Tacker).

Fast forward to Priscilla Presley as Jenna. She swoops in as Bobby's marriage to Pam is ending. Bobby repeatedly makes it clear that he will never love anyone, including her, like he loves Pamela. She watches him struggle with how he feels every time Pam is around. All obvious red flags. Yet, this doesn't stop her from pursuing him or allowing him to pursue her.

At the same time Bobby realized he couldn't marry anyone but Pamela, Jenna ended their engagement before he could. But, what makes her 'Bobby obsession' weird is: Even if we ignore the "dream season" (which technically doesn't count) Where she immediately started dating (cousin) Jack Ewing. Then randomly all of a sudden she was in the middle of a mental breakdown. Obsessing over this missed opportunity to be married to Bobby. Acting as if she would have married him straight out of prison, he'd still be alive. I understand it was supposed to be her coping mechanism, to pretend she didn't end their engagement the night before his death. I felt like, it was just entirely too over the top, irrational, and unnecessary, especially with how delayed it was.

Move on to Season 10: She was angry and depressed, rightfully so. A very human reaction to being on the receiving end of a broken engagement. Yet, her interactions with Pam were like she was learning for the first time that Pam and Bobby loved each other. As if, she didn't have a major part in blocking Bobby and Pam from having a chance to reconcile. Yes, Bobby pursued her, but it was obviously a rebound relationship. (Just as Mark was for Pamela.) Then Jenna completely turning her back on all of the Ewing's as if they were the cause of the break up. Going so far as to say Miss Ellie will never know Lucas as her grandchild. She refuses to name Bobby on the birth certificate as the father of his biological son. Yet, she named Bobby as Charlie's father on her birth certificate, when he wasn't.

Then, Jenna clamps onto Ray, while he's in the middle of a divorce from his pregnant wife. She even goes so far as to drop hints to Bobby after she marries Ray. I'm sure it's supposed to come off as if she's been head-over-heels in love with Bobby her whole life and always will. But, their history proves that isn't true. After all, she left him at the alter at a time when they should have been head-over-heels in love. I just can't un-see the pattern with her! She goes after married men whom can't really commit to her. Takes everything she can get, while she can. Then plays the victim when the relationship ends.

I think she's a character who never had a reason to exist except for driving the plot in a stand-alone episode, similar to Pamela's ex-husband. Great episodes, btw.
Morgan Fairchild was catching up with the goings-on in DALLAS and perhaps that feeling never stopped with the two re-introductions of the Jenna character.
Somehow it makes sense that Priscilla's Jenna was often out of sync, as it were, and also a little frustrating to watch.

As for the obsession itself, it's Bobby Ewing and everybody is supposed to be obsessed with him. Even JR.

Bobby went after her, not the other way around.
I said that Bobby went after her. She was his rebound,

As for her interactions with Pam, she had every right to slap the taste out of Pam's mouth when she offered to take her child.
I agree. But, Jenna was also considering abortion. So why not let the father and his wife have the baby she doesn't want?

Well said! Jenna was a spoiled golddigger who manipulated men to get what she wanted and then got bored. Bobby offered her the chance of a great well off life with a hot husband who loved her that any woman would jump at in a heartbeat, but that wasn't good enough for her. She thought that she could do better, and when she got bored with Naldo and saw that Pam had taken her place, she manipulated Bobby and tried to break up his marriage. She knew that Bobby would always choose Pam over her, but she didn't let that stop her. My sense is that she likely got pregnant with Lucas on purpose to trap him into marrying her, and when that didn't work yet again, she became an annoying bitter screaming shrew.

In this scene Jock surveys the land while Pam and Miss Ellie chat and as she's leaving Pam asks who Jenna Wade is (Sue Ellen had almost spilled the beans at the dinner table the previous evening much to Bobby's dislike).

Jock joins them and let's it out that Bobby was going to marry Jenna and that he (Jock) would have been happy with this.

A great deal of secrecy and mystery surrounded Jenna but each time she appeared it just went flat. So much for their young love backstory. Was it JR who was behind her turning up or have I misremembered this?

So much wasted potential for Jenna and Pam who always had to sort things out.

Jenna was yet another female who started out such a strong character then whined and whinged her way through every scene and relationship.
Priscilla Jenna to blame?

Not sure if Jenna was obsessed with Bobby so much as being obsessed with being a total bore.

So why not let the father and his wife have the baby she doesn't want?
Doesn't work like that.

I’ve always felt the reason they tried to make Jenna so unlikable was because she always had to be portrayed as being inferior to Pam and not quite on her level in Bobby’s eyes. She was always portrayed as a threat to Pam but I think the character flaws were there mostly to make everyone never accept her over Pam as Bobby’s main love. She was portrayed in a way as to always fall short.

Personally I did like Jenna, major flaws and all. She did a lot of questionable things as mentioned previously, things I didn’t approve of. But somehow despite her issues I always end up enjoying her relationship with Bobby when Priscilla first joined the show.

That's for Bobby to request, not the women he dumped her for.

We're supposed to be talking about Jenna, not Pam.

I think the same things can be said about April as were said about Jenna in the original post.

April knew Bobby would never love her the way he loved Pam but she relentlessly pursued him regardless. When Bobby started to care about April, he got obsessed with the Pam look-a-like and eventually had to sleep with her to say, "goodbye" to Pam (s.m.h.).
April out of obsession, jealousy and cruelty, felt compelled to tell Bobby the secret that Cliff had kept from him to spare his feelings. She told Bobby that Cliff had found Pam but she didn't want anything to do with Bobby and was marrying her doctor. April did that to hurt Bobby and hoping she could pick up the broken pieces like some sick, twisted psychopath who only cared about her own needs. Jenna was the same for the most part.

Jenna was misconceived and miscast from the start. She should have been outgoing, confident, and sexy. She should have been charismatic but also a bit of a bad girl. She’s someone who did what she had to do to survive after her family went broke. I guess that’s closer to what Morgan Fairchild played than Priscilla Presley. But I never bought Fairchild as the girl from the ranch next door. Which is funny because Fairchild is a Dallas native in real life.

No I don't think Jenna has a weird obsession with Bobby. He was her first love. Probably the love of her life. Yes she was a fool not to marry him when they were young but young people sometimes makes mistakes that they'll end up regretting later in life. By the time they reconnected later in life she thought she had gotten a second chance with Bobby. She wanted to believe that they could make it work and if Katherine hadn't meddled and brought back Naldo Jenna and Bobby would have been married. I believe they would have been happy together. But happy doesn't make for a good soap opera so instead they had to reunite Bobby with Pam.

I said that Bobby went after her. She was his rebound,
No Kay Lloyd, Tracey McKay and Tammy Miller were Bobby's rebound relationships after his second divorce from Pam.

Jenna was much more than a rebound. She was Bobby's first love. He had genuine feelings for her. He cared about her. He didn't love her the same way he loved Pam but he did love her.

You do realize that what you are suggesting is that Bobby and Pam use Jenna as a surrogacy to be able to have his natural baby?

That is not fair to Jenna. It is her body. She has every right to decide if she wants to go through a pregnancy to have a child or not!
Having said that, I do think she made the right call not to have an abortion. She loved Bobby and wanted to have his baby even if the circumstances were wrong. I can totally understand why she felt heartbroken over what Bobby did to her. She also never tried to hold the baby over Bobby's head to force him into marrying her. That's why she didn't even want him to find out before he married Pam. It was Ray who was a blabbermouth.

I like Priscilla's version of Jenna the best. She had class and was a Southern lady.

I completely disagree. The father has just as much right to that baby as she does. Her body? What about the baby's body? I'm not going to argue abortion with you. We clearly differ with our opinions of when murder is acceptable. Had they stayed together she would have never considered abortion. Just because they separated doesn't give her the right to eliminate a child he would gladly have taken. The outcome would have been the same. She could be without the child that so inconvenienced her and he could have had the child he didn't see as nuisance.

I think that the original casting of Morgan Fairchild was perfect and her portrayal was outstanding. Jenna was hungry for much more than just being the ranch girl next door, that was the whole point. She wanted an exciting glamorous jet set life and was real competition for Pam, and that was Morgan's Jenna to a tee. Francine Tacker was a fine enough actress, and her Jenna was certainly better than Priscilla's, but she was still only second best. Priscilla couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, and they had to water down her Jenna so much that she was just annoying. Casting her just for her name value was a huge mistake, and I'm sure that they regretted it

It was nothing short of stunt casting.

A pity Morgan Fairchild didn't want to come back because as lovely looking as Priscilla was she really wasn't much of an actor! :)

That's not entirely fair to Priscilla. Like any performer, she had her weaknesses, but some strengths as well. Her emotionless stare was one of the best in the industry at the time, and while some actors hammed it up in tense situations, she managed to subtley convey 'mildly distressed' no matter how high the stakes were in a scene.
