Dallas Couples JR & Sue Ellen - Swoonalicious Appreciation Thread

Sorry to pipe in and perhaps change the subject, I don't mean to...

I was wondering, during Calhoun's reign of terror, what would JR had done had he SEEN Calhoun with Sue Ellen - either out shopping with Pam the day he took her keys or seen her collapse in the cafe while Calhoun was with her?

Thanks :innocent:

I think having an heir was important to Jock, but not to JR. And as others have stated, he wasn't too concerned about making it happen because Gary had only managed to produce a girl and Bobby didn't have kids.

Also, there was a very weird dynamic between JR and SE then. I think he didn't want to have a child with her because that would give her a bigger hold on HIM. JR seemed to want to keep her at arms length in those days. Having a kid with her would have made that harder.

Lost his mind.

I mean TOTALLY lost it.

Not sure how he would have handled it, buy pretty sure it would have been explosive. It would have scared him to death.

And poor Sue Ellen would have found her self locked in an Ivory tower at SF until he knew for sure she (and John Ross) were safe.

@Justine I guess maybe it wasn’t as important to him at that point because Bobby was showing no signs of settling down and Gary couldn’t get his life in order enough to have another child and heir. It seems like once Bobby got married to Pam that J.R. started to panic and the competition was on.
I definitely agree with that Bobby and Pam arriving on Southfork and getting pregnant so quickly set him into panic-mode (internally, anyway) but I guess that only adds to my question. At that point, Bobby and Pam having a baby must have seemed inevitable, so did J.R. just envision a future without kids?
I think he believed it would happen at first, then he likely attributed their lack of success to their lack of interaction
I was also kind of thinking that maybe he even viewed it as a sign that he and Sue Ellen weren't "meant to be" which kind of feeds into CeeCee's point below, which is such an interesting perspective and definitely falls into his character of being "the eternal bachelor" of Dallas.

I think he would’ve made it clear that B.D. was not to come anywhere near Sue Ellen ever again. And then he would’ve paid him to kidnap Pam instead.

And don’t ever apologize for piping in and changing the subject Sarah. This is your thread and I for one have missed you being here!!

Their marriage was so awful at that point I wonder if he even cared. Like yes, if she left he'd want her back, but while he had her he didn't do much to keep her. So Sue Ellen's desire for a family barely registered as an interest for him and the idea of going to bed with his wife over and over had long passed appealing it seemed. We have to remember JR and Sue Ellen didn't appear to have a very interesting intimate relationship in the early years of the show, we learn this almost directly when Julie encouraged JR to share his likes with Sue Ellen and he seemed disgusted by the idea. So for him the idea of doing it for pleasure wasn't appealing and the idea of doing it more deliberately to conceive was almost out of the question.

JR was pissed when Pam announced her pregnancy but even then he still didn't exactly rush Sue Ellen into mirroring the same circumstances. He appeared to be happier to moan than do anything about it.

I think his reaction would have been similar to how he reacted when he got the photos sent to him. He would have been jealous and scared. But he would not have let Sue Ellen leave with BD Calhoun. He would have either hired a PI to follow them, or if it had been when she collapsed he would have swept in and insisted on taking his wife home!

Thanks for answering my question Karin. I have to agree!

I've been thinking about when Dallas came back in 2012. I know this has already been discussed way back when, but if you could go back in time and be in charge of the reboot, would you put JR/SE together from the get go, as being married and living at Southfork, or would you have them get back together on the show?

If you would put them back together on the show, how would you do it?

Remember you only have 17 episodes. All of season one and half of season two before Larry died. :(

I don't know if they'd marry again but I could see there being a matriarch and patriarch of Southfork with sometimes lovers thing going on. Anything to get more Linda on the screen considering how shortchanged she was in the first season. And any JR/SE interaction would be nice, fanservice and because they had great chemistry in scenes together.

I wouldn’t put them back together from the get go. I think that would’ve cheated their fans. It would be better to put them back together on the show over time. But to be honest I liked the ending they had even better. It’s very sad, definitely not a happy ending, but none of the couples of Dallas really got their happy ending. And as sad as that is it’s also very realistic. I love Sue Ellen’s speech at J.R.’s funeral. It was perfect and I wouldn’t change a word. One of the few things TNT Dallas got right imo.

I would have put them back together from the beginning. I mean Larry was in his 80s so we didn't know how long he would be with us. So I think there would be no time to lose. I didn't like seeing JR/SE on each other's throats again in Dallas TNT. I mean they cut out the scene where they kissed at the barbeque but kept the one where she slapped him?

That was not what the fans wanted to see at all.

I remember when the show came back how people talked about JR/SE and how some fans wanted to see them date other people and get jealous before they were reunited and I kept thinking to myself that the fans were still talking about JR/SE like if they were in their 40s or 50s. I think at that point in their lives their relationship would have gotten a bit more stable. So it would have been nice to see them living on Southfork with John Ross and his wife Pamela Rebecca. Considering how JR/SE felt about Afton and Cliff a lot of drama could have come from that.

I understand why you would feel that way. With age comes wisdom and people do mellow but a big part of their appeal to me was when they were at each other’s throats. To me that’s what made them so much fun. It was part of their charm.

I wouldn’t have cut that scene either. I would’ve kept both to be honest. As far as their story goes it shows both ends of the spectrum perfectly.

I don’t like the idea of them dating other people at this point either. If ur gonna reunite them, then reunite them but the whole dating other people to make each other jealous thing wouldn’t have made sense at this point. They were both well past that.
