Unfortunately, many years ago, surgical operations of this type were physically and psychologically devastating. One arm remained more swollen than the other and the prosthetics had nothing of natural.
BBG did look frumpy. She put zero effort into how she dressed. Her style was lazy at best. She lived on a ranch but didn't work it. All the other women that lived on the same ranch had the decency to wear anything other than what amounted to a sleeping gown (Sue Ellen, Lucy, Pam, Jenna). Her style didn't even match those of either of her husband's. May she rest in peace but her style was lazy, unflattering and down right unattractive .
Designer laughing all the way to the bank.Oh, she put effort into how she dressed: she had a couturière, Jean Louis, who designed those sack dresses.
Miss Ellie's Southworth roots in the land mean that she is mentally far more secure in her privileged status than big oilmen are. She is a rancher's daughter first, and that never changed. Miss Ellie's marriage to Jock was a compromise and alliance between Southworth and Ewing outlooks, which still sometimes conflicted. This dynamic gave Dallas a certain fire within the Ewing family. We all saw what happened when Donna Reed played Miss Ellie as the typical oil baron's wife, i.e. it took the conflict out of the Ewing family dynamic, resulting in a strange lack of emotion in Reed's performance most of the time. And somehow, Clayton went from Sue Ellen and her stylish presence to a frumpy matriarch.
That was unbelievable, right there, since Clayton could presumably afford a trophy wife.
Maybe JR was right, calling Clayton a jealous suitor, who first pursued his Wife then his Mother.
But seriously, a wealthy Texas wife would dress more fashionably, if only because she was frequently
in the company of other wealthy Texas wives who would certainly have comments
I have wondered where JR got his abusive behaviour from. Jock told JR that "if anyone said anything bad about Miss Ellie, I'd have killed them" (paternity suit) All JR replied was "Oh Daddy". But then Sue Ellen was guilty here of her affair with Cliff Barnes. That was more JR's thing.
He was right. He called Clayton a jilted suitor, in love with his wife and courting his Mother.Maybe JR was right,
Perhaps Miss Ellie realized that, as dramatic as Clayton was about his feelings for Sue Ellen, it was really more of a hopeless puppy dog fantasy crush, as opposed to him being head over heels in love with her. He certainly had his opportunities if he was seriously going to act on his feelings for Sue Ellen and he never did. When it came down to it, he chose a total package of style and substance and Miss Ellie knew that his feelings and intentions toward her were genuine in a way they weren't for Sue Ellen. He was right. He called Clayton a jilted suitor, in love with his wife and courting his Mother.
I always felt as though Miss Ellie should have felt second best. When Clayton was honest about Sue Ellen and how he felt, Miss Ellie just accepted it and it was soon forgotten about.
It's pretty obvious where J.R. got his bad side from. The ruthless business of Ewing Oil was everything to J.R. and he never found any similar satisfaction away from that, beyond the chase after a woman (which in itself was its own competition). Jock's upbringing was a very different one to J.R.'s, i.e. Jock had a working class upbringing and he became rich during the early oil wildcatters in Texas. J.R. was out in the oil fields as a small child with his dad.I have wondered where JR got his abusive behaviour from. Jock told JR that "if anyone said anything bad about Miss Ellie, I'd have killed them" (paternity suit) All JR replied was "Oh Daddy". But then Sue Ellen was guilty here of her affair with Cliff Barnes.
Could J.R. have coped with someone like Miss Ellie, Pam or Donna as his wife? I doubt it. It might have been the making of him, on the other hand, if it could work somehow. He treated Sue Ellen bad most of the time, made worse by the fact that she was brought up to expect love from a husband, but J.R.'s treatment of Sue Ellen just made her cynical and resentful. We don't know of JR's behaviour before he married Sue Ellen, but then she was a trophy wife. Maybe JR should've chosen a wife more like his own Mother in order to treat a wife of his better.
Sue Ellen didn't want Clayton that way. That's it. They have to get on with their lives. He was right. He called Clayton a jilted suitor, in love with his wife and courting his Mother.

I always found it a little odd that Clayton was going to propose to Sue Ellen so quickly. They really hadn’t spent much time together other than when she lived at the Southern Cross and him frequenting her condo. They certainly hadn’t been intimate either. I did like them together and I actually thought they would’ve made a nice couple but Clayton buying that ring really felt premature, even knowing how he thought he felt about her.Sue Ellen didn't want Clayton that way. That's it. They have to get on with their lives.
I'm not sure about the hopeless puppy dog bit, Clayton saw Sue Ellen as a daughter which he didn't have and she saw him as a Father figure. Then those lines got blurred because Clayton was a lonely soul and thought Sue Ellen was the same. It took Afton and JR to reinforce to Clayton how he felt which were genuine albeit confused feelings.Perhaps Miss Ellie realized that, as dramatic as Clayton was about his feelings for Sue Ellen, it was really more of a hopeless puppy dog fantasy crush, as opposed to him being head over heels in love with her. He certainly had his opportunities if he was seriously going to act on his feelings for Sue Ellen and he never did. I guess that relationship with Ewing Oil stemmed from wanting to make Jock proud and the desire to be more ruthless than Jock in business because he was allowed that free reign and Jock approved of most of his bad behaviour. It's a shame Miss Ellie and Jock didn't ever step in before to try and stop JR's abusive behaviour. Miss Ellie did a couple of times, but Jock only tried once Sue Ellen was providing a grandchild and then it was because Miss Ellie said he should.he never found any similar satisfaction away from that, beyond the chase after a woman
I agree. However dysfunctional and toxic they were, Sue Ellen loved JR and that love was her weakness. She did manage to stand up to him numerous times and could also give as good as she got. She kept him on his toes and was the only one he could really confide in.Could J.R. have coped with someone like Miss Ellie, Pam or Donna as his wife? I doubt it.
Actually she was brought up to accept love didn't have to come with the wealth and position provided from a suitable husband. Status even without love was more important to Momma Sheperd and this was passed on to her daughters. Sue Ellen accepted this until Bobby brought Pam home then she realised what real love was and what was missing from her own marriage.made worse by the fact that she was brought up to expect love from a husband,
Maybe she would have without the reappearance of Cliff and interference from JR. She may have turned to him more and more and then developed feelings for him. She was relieved though when Clayton denied having feelings for her. He said he loved her but in a different way than anyone else would. Of course later a drunk Sue Ellen would throw herself at him, maybe that was HER real feelings coming out this time?Sue Ellen didn't want Clayton that way. That's it.
For him maybe it wasn't quick, he'd had time to come to terms with how he felt and maybe wanted to risk taking the chance. I was so sad when he didn't go through with it as soon as he heard she was back with JR. I was so cross with him.I always found it a little odd that Clayton was going to propose to Sue Ellen so quickly.
This is the pic she put in The Biloxi Press when she started looking for a job... as a cleaning lady!
PD: This message strictly refers to the fictional character of Afton Cooper. Miss Landers is a true act of class and she still greets me back every year for Christmas... and liked my little video!
