There is a lot to be said for Netflix taking a closer look at creating their own version of a "Super Soap." In these uncertain times with Covid-19 (and I don't mean this in poor taste) but with many people still in self isolation or working from home season 3 of Dynasty is hitting the mark with good timing.
New Dynasty may not resonate with me as much as Dallas but I wonder what the end result would have been if the continuation of Dallas had the benefit of Netflix.

So ... time to announce season 5 already! 
No. 5 in the UK this week on the Flix of Net. I know it’s hopeless at times as a show, but I would like to see it continue past S4 too. It really hit its stride in S3 and I think the success now is well deserved IMO.

FRIENDS at #2? That show's never been off the air afaik.
I must confess I am a huge Friends fan. I have been watching the bluray boxed set 3 times already. Except for a few jokes and fashion sense, the series never gets old in my book.

Maybe because Friends is really good, and new generations always discover it. Streaming and binging is big with teens and young adults.

When Les Moonves made that oft-quoted remark about the show "making money before it even hits the air" he was speaking in the period when it aired on Netflix weekly, and of course he did not know the CW ratings would sink to 340-380k thanks to the worst time slot in television and zero promotion. I wonder if the decision to change how the series is released helped the Netflix folks (and by extension, the CW) earn more money off it. If the results are good enough for the CW to demand a higher licensing fee from Netflix for Dynasty season four, (and by extension, the producers demanding a higher licensing fee from the CW) then the CW might actually stop treating the show like a wicked stepchild.
To give an idea of the low bar the CW sets for ratings, I noticed in an article on another subject that the CW as a broadcast network in the US has a lower total viewership than both Univision and Telemundo, both of which cater to the Spanish-speaking audience.

The higher ratings of UPN and/or WB had more to do with the much lower level of competition for eyeballs back then. Cable was growing but broadcast was still the biggest draw, and of course no one imagined we'd be watching 'streamed' TV shows on our phones. Viewers have migrated away from broadcast over time, and the execs in charge have
learned to live with diminishing returns.
The ratings for the "netlets" back then were considered abysmal but in 2020 those same numbers would be considered impressive.

A show in 1999 that got a 2.0 rating would be considered a failure. Today, a 2.0 might win their time slot.

I've decided to watch one episode of New DYNASTY every Saturday and Sunday morning to help delineate the weekends during lock-down. So I'm gonna watch Episode 3 now. I'm quite looking forward to it.

That was always my thing, to watch Dynasty on a Saturday morning, the day after it aired, while preparing brunch. It's best to multi task while watching because it doesn't need your full attention. I may go back and re-watch the series prior to Season 4 to catch up on the little things I missed.

My favourite bit of Episode 3 was a short scene with Tony the Gardener. It was like he'd wandered in from a different, funnier show.

Someone at the show realized that any nighttime soap worth its salt has to develop interesting (and usually funny) peripheral characters to spice things up. Tony D. Gardener* has always been around, but they wisely don't use him too much. He brings a different sort of amusement in his interactions with the Carringtons, since they're usually hitting us over the head with sarcasm and sophisticated references, and that kind of stuff just goes over his head. Similarly, Fallon's assistant/secretary Alison has been "around" for a season or two but only toward the end of the season do we actually get more than the usual one-sided interactions with her employer. Tony and Alison more like the "every man/woman" of the show, since you get the idea they go home at night and laugh at all the insane behavior they witness all day at work.
* I refer to Tony as "Tony D. Gardener" since they have yet to give him a last name, and Fallon usually identifies him as "Tony the Gardener" as if that's his whole first name "Tonythegardener". It reminds me of how self-centered Karen Walker of Will and Grace dehumanized her staff by referring to them by their job rather than by their name. "I asked Cook not to add onions to this soup," or "Hey, Chauffeur...who said you could make eye contact?"
