What is the salary of primetime actors like Charles Shaughnessy, Gregory Harrison and Robert Gossett compared to their daytime cast mates? I guess they get more money than newcomers, but not as much as daytime veterans. GH is the only soap that acquires primetime actors. I wonder how that's possible money wise.

Longtime GH fan, dissappointed in this week's shows.

On the good side, Robert Gossett's character keeps getting better. He may be the one who finds the evidence that will clear Trina.
The actor replacing Michael temporarily is doing well.
Always great to see Diane in action.
I liked the development of Britt, but I don't care for what will be her inevitable pairing with Cody
JPS as Valentin continues to impress.

Now for the other side.

The Sonny/Nina pairing doesn't work, and it is disgusting. Granted Carly is...Carly with all her flaws,
but Nina is just a self-important, self-centered hypocrite who let a family mourn for a man
who was still alive.
Are we finally going to see Liz's parents?
Austin has been boring, but maybe this backstory will change that.
Charles S. is a great Victor, but I wish they would move his story quicker.
What is the story with the supposedly brilliant lawyer who Esme is playing?

This cannot easily be answered, since every actor has "representation" (agent) who negotiates their compensation, which is often a lot harder to quantify than just per episode salary. There is no set "pay scale". Not only do they negotiate a per episode rate, they negotiate "guarantees" (the # of episodes in which they appear per week or per month) that will dictate how often they work. Many veterans will agree to a pay cut if the trade-off is more structured vacation time (like Finola Hughes and Genie Francis does every summer), while some actors will opt for lower guarantees in order to keep their regular per-episode rate intact. There's also a lot of different types of contracts nowadays, with some actors opting for shorter contracts rather than the standard "three-year deal" that most newcomers are expected to sign. They can tailor a contract's length to the wishes of an actor if they want him/her bad enough, but the compensation will certainly be affected by those demands. So learning an individual actor's per-episode rate (even if you could dig up such personal data) doesn't tell the whole story, because the actor might have negotiated special perks that skew the data.
The actor replacing Michael temporarily is doing well.
I totally agree, and it's even more impressive since Adamson was so non-descript during his time as Noah Newman on Y&R. It puzzles me, however, that he keeps dropping in and out this way. Chad Duell (he of the Chronic Constipation Face) announced he'd be temporarily replaced when it happened the first time, which was months ago during that weird marriage/insta-divorce he had offscreen. Now, you never know who's going to play Michael from one day to the next. It's almost like the whole mess with Kirsten Storms a few years back.
I liked the development of Britt, but I don't care for what will be her inevitable pairing with Cody
I remember Josh Kelly's run on OLTL, where he played Cutter Wentworth, a smoother, more typical con-man/opportunist that nevertheless was kind of likeable. This Cody character is too rough around the edges, not endearing at all to me. The desperate effort to tie him to Dante with those inane conversations about summer camp are not helping, either. Britt deserves better than this. If they can do some rehab on Roger Howarth's latest character, those two would be a better match.

Lately I've noticed that when I realize who's in the new episode, I already know if this episode is going to blow my mind or not. That wasn't the case for me a few years ago, back then I liked every episode.

I'm not a fan of trials in soaps, so I'm as unenthusiastic about Trina's trial as I was about Nina's. I'm always happy when trials are over.

I generally don't like it when characters describe a new character as charming, hot and sexy in conversations about him as is happening with Cody right now. I have the feeling that this constant praise has the opposite effect among fans. I'm glad to see Josh Kelly again in daytime because he never convinced me in primetime. I last saw him in a crossover of Grey's Anatomy & Station 19 and he was very annoying there. I was amazed Cody didn't know Olivia in person. Wouldn't it have been exciting if she did The Graduate on him? If Dante found out now, he would have been shocked and it would have made Ned jealous.

Is Chase half-naked in 80 percent of his episodes? It's now exaggerated how often he has to undress.

.

I tend to agree. It is like we are being force fed the character.

I am not a big Dante fan, but Dante and Cody together are just insufferable.

Are we finally going to see Liz's parents?
I've been wanting this to happen for some time. Becky Herbst is an "unsung hero" on GH, and yet they seem bound and determined not to give her the chance to shine. Even when they write a story that, on paper seems to be for Liz, it becomes a story for everyone else and she barely participates. No one has confirmed or denied it, but several people have claimed that Liz was sent to Shadybrook while BH renegotiates her contract. It would make some sense; they've done similar things in the past with other actors when their contract negotiations became problematic. But that was MONTHS ago, and no progress seems to be happening. As for her parents, they have been hinting at that story point since before Franco died and no casting rumors have leaked. The longer things remain stalled, the more I fear they're preparing a story for Liz that might involve Jeff and Carolyn only in helping escort her off the show. Other than Finn, no one seems to be worried for Liz, talking about her issues and speculating on why she's in such a state---and they only write Finn's concern because it's the only thing he has to do, story-wise. They blithely write off her kids by saying "Cameron is taking care of them," but what sort of support system/family allows such a thing to happen? He's a college student working at Kelly's, but he's also raising his two brothers by himself? I know they had to write around GF's vacation but Laura could have taken Aiden and Jake with her to Europe in order to take some of the burden off poor Cameron.

This sort of neglect for a fan-favorite veteran actress is unfortunately something we've seen so often in the past, even on this very show. I wasn't watching the show at the time, but I recall the fan furor over how Genie Francis was treated as a set decoration for years. It's only in the past five or so years that the producers have realized what she can bring to the show, and (arguably) are using her quite well. I can't help but picture Liz as the show's younger version of Laura Collins, what with her linkages to all the original core families and history with the show's cast.

You are right---when soap producers try to tell the viewers what to think about a new character, they typically react against it, even referring to it as "pimping" the new character. If the character and the actor mesh well, they typically don't have to say anything or play it up--they just let the material speak for itself. Cody is written like an unkept, unmotivated frat boy-type---when he's supposed to be (probably) 35-40 years old. He's like that guy who hangs around partying with college kids despite being way too old for that demographic. Such an attitude worked for Morgan Corinthos because Morgan was 20-ish and had been coddled all his life. This behavior from a man Cody's age is not a good look. And while I feel like a jerk for bringing it up, Cody could use a good "cleaning up" if he's going to be marketed as the "sexy new stud in town" and onscreen with the likes of Kelly Thiebaud. He doesn't have to be Ryan Paevey (I mean, there can be only one...) but he could at least get a haircut and some sun.

It’s between him and Donna Logan to see who joins a nudist colony first I think.

I really wonder if there is some situation with Josh Swickard (Chase) behind the scenes that we do not know about. There ought not be any question about what the character does---Port Chuck is a town that cannot have too many cops! Even as there is a notable shortage of them at the moment, they keep coming up with reasons to keep Chase "on suspension" and unable to join in on various stories such as Trina's trial or investigating Esme. Dante and newcomer Rory are the only cops in town.
They've been teasing a relationship between Chase and Brook Lynn for seemingly forever, and yet there is ZERO movement. It's been so long since they teased Chase/BLQ as a couple (the plot to keep Bailey Louise hidden from Peter) that I've frankly given up on them ever getting together.

This half-hearted story of him becoming a singer has "time-killer" written all over it, as if they came up with it as a place-holding storyline while something else is being developed. At least I hope there is, because I hate singing stories on soaps.

I guess GH will only be the beginning of Nicholas Chavez's career. He has an attitude often found in Shondaland series. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in one of Shonda Rhimes' shows.

In the GH stairwell, no actor is really good looking, but some are even worse looking than others, like Chad Duell. Proof of the importance of good lighting.

So Kelly Thiebaud (Britt) is leaving the series to resume a role she had on Station 19. Good for her, of course, but it's a shame they've only just gotten around to establishing Britt as a viable lead character. Thiebaud has always turned in a good performance, even in her Britch-iest days. I have to wonder, however, where this leaves Josh Kelly and his new, floundering "Cody" character, since it's pretty obvious he was brought in to be her love interest. I also fear it might further push my dear Liesl further into the background. There are persistent rumors (and a few cryptic tweets) that give the impression Kin Shriner is not at all happy with the show at the moment for reducing his screen time even further.

If I were writing the show, I'd have Nina draft Auntie Liesl to run Nina's half of the MetroCourt, what with Nina busy running Crimson. Liesl, as you will recall, was Chief of Staff at GH for a while, and spent years offscreen running her Clinic for the Not-Quite-Dead. That is significant administrative experience (much more than either Olivia or Carly had), and the hotel could use some of that German/Swiss level of organization and efficiency. It would be funny at first to see Olivia being driven up the wall, but eventually seeing that Liesl has good ideas and makes the place run much easier, giving Olivia more time to spend with Leo and Ned. We could then watch Carly's head explode when she sees Olivia and Liesl acting friendly, with Olivia defending Liesl on occasion.

As for Britt, I'm not sure they ought to recast the role (though I'd keep an open mind if they did). I certainly hope they don't make the mistake of killing her off (even if it's a "killing off" in that inconclusive way soaps do). If they opt not to recast and have her leave town, have her get a message from Jason (!!) that he is recovering in a secret location and wants her to join him. After some serious, solitary deliberation, she decides to leave town to reunite with him. It would be controversial (especially among the Steve Burton Haters) but it would leave the door open for her (and maybe Jason) to return someday.

Is Kelly Thiebaud leaving or just reduced to recurring? I'm watching Station 19 and since her former love interest just offered to be a sperm donor to a lesbian couple, I'm pretty sure why Kelly's character is returning. On Station 19 characters like Kelly's never last long, they either leave town and leave their child behind or just die sooner or later, so Kelly shouldn't build a future on Station 19. While James Patrick Stuart was on that Disney Channel show as an official cast member he shot some scenes for GH early in the morning, so if Kelly Thiebaud would want to stay on GH, there would be a way.

Now I'm afraid there's no way to save Cody. I don't know if it's just the script or because Josh Kelly still acts the same way he did in OLTL. What was charming back then for a twen no longer works.

After 10 years without any cancellation I figured soaps were safe because networks realized cheaper shows would get far fewer viewers, but now that NBC puts Days from its schedule, I'm worried about GH again, ratings are falling rather than rising, so what can GH do to bring viewers back?

Sadly, I don’t think there’s anything they can do really. I hope I’m wrong but eventually I see the remaining shows going the same route as Days. The networks will continue to reshuffle their daytime lineups, trying to increase viewership, and that means appealing to a much younger demographic.

Don't want them to save Cody. He is annoying
KT's departure is a shame, since she has done well with the character.

It might not be up to GH---"Shondaland" might not want to share her with GH. But the question has not really been answered by either side yet. I do know that part-time Britt might not do the character any favors. I know that the show's "write-around" for the absence of James Patrick Stuart when he was filming that other show has hobbled Valentin and made the Valentin/Anna story lose all momentum. GH seems to be quietly trimming some cast expenses, so maybe this departure is what both sides wanted.

GH's ratings has its ups and downs, but they have good numbers for W18-49. As long as the network honchos still slavishly follow that demographic, GH can likely continue. GH is "owned" by the network, so they get better support than soaps like Y&R which are licensed from other production companies.

I've just read the new issue of Soap Opera Digest and there are multiple polls for all soaps. Brenda was voted most-missed character (ahead of Jason & Lucky) and best Sonny pairing (ahead of Nina & Carly). TBH I never felt the love for Brenda. Am I the only one who's feeling this way? The best thing about her last run was the fact that Adrienne Barbeau played her supposedly loyal friend Suzanne.

It seems to me that every soap has that one character (sometimes more) who gain favor merely by their absence. Whenever viewers are dissatisfied with the current show, they fall back into nostalgia about the time when X character was in town, and how the show could be just as good (or better) if X would come back. "Bring back X to save the show!" I often hear. I usually refuse to allow myself to get too wrapped up in "Bring back X!" campaigns because there are so many instances of such returns of past stars not being the success they hoped or planned it to be. It's just a totally different soap world these days, and sometimes it's just better to move forward than look back. At worst, the good memories of X in their original run can (and often does) become tainted by the memories of the disastrous return engagement.

If they bring back X, they might not write him or her in the same way, since the writer of the original plots is likely no longer there. The actor might not have the same outlook on the character or on the backstage reasons for the return, having been away for a while and changed as an actor (for good or for bad). No one character is an island on a soap, so X might return and find himself surrounded by an entirely different group of characters than when they were originally on the show, throwing off the "magic" even further. No one character or actor should have the responsibility of "saving the show" placed on their shoulders, even if the people saying it admire the actor and desperately want him or her to succeed. So obviously there are many possible stumbling blocks to making lightning strike twice. In fact, I'd say the deck is stacked against the show having such returns go well, much less "revitalize" the show.

Gloria Monty didn't like to recast, and I think it was generally a good decision.

A recast might work for certain characters if they are brought back with better storylines, but it doesn't always work too well.
