The Bold and the Beautiful Watching The Bold and the Beautiful

Once upon a time.... the show didn't revolve around Hope and Liam. I'm sure part of the reason Susan and Ronn left is because THEY were even talking about them constantly. I don't understand how this show is still #2 in the ratings.
I've always assumed that the reason so much emphasis was placed on Hope/Liam was because the writers realized they had pretty much played Brooke/Ridge into the ground, that they needed to create a "next generation" tortured coupling, then transition Ridge and Brooke into the Eric/Stephanie area. Ronn Moss seemed especially put out by this idea, since he "wasn't ready for the rocking chair just yet".

Y&R did something similar when they transitioned Victor/Nikki out of the endless break-up/make-up mode, christening Nick and Sharon as their successors.

WOW!! I hate to say this.... I can't believe there is enough people watch, but IMO I would rather watch paint dry. To me that is more exciting than this. I started watching the show in August of 1988 and my last full episode was December 2012(first Christmas episode without Stephanie). I just can't stomach it.
I’m watching the early 1988 episodes now, which I have never seen before as I didn’t start watching until the early 90s. And as much as I love watching these old episodes it’s just not fair to compare the current product to what the show was back then. It actually makes me quite sad!

Totally!! I prefer to watch those episodes too!!! I don't care... I already know what's going to happen but it is the BEST!!! I was 12 I'm 1988 and was in junior high. In 2012, I was 36. I literally grew up watching the show.

The difference with Hope/Liam and Ridge/Brooke is that the show didn't totally revolve around Ridge/Brooke. There were multiple storylines going on. To waste Susan Flannery's talent just to talk about Hope and Liam's love life was sinful!!!

It will take a while to get used to NuTaylor. Her entrance ("Taylor in the flesh!") was so bad. This constant talk about how she is there for her children and her grandchildren who love her (even though they don't know her) gets on my nerves, as does her self-adulation for her work somewhere (or nowhere) in Africa. By the way, there are countries and cities in Africa or do the writers think that B&B viewers are not aware of this? And Taylor loves it that her grandson bears the name of her bad ex-husband, as if every woman would love it!

I think it’s more that the writers themselves are not aware of it. Just a hunch

Mind boggling. I guess you can look at it like it’s so long ago now so maybe she’s forgiven him and therefore the name is okay with her but it’s still a head scratcher for me.

There is already a long-standing tradition of Days referring to characters "in Europe"; it's almost a joke now. In establishing shots, fans would refer to the set as "Downtown Europe" or "Restaurant in Europe" (even if the show doesn't). So B&B can now claim Taylor was in "Downtown Africa".

Krista Allen spiced up the ratings! Her first episode was - by far - the most watched episode of the week, almost beating Y&R's friday episode. We have to wait until next week to get this week's numbers to see if ratings remain that good.

The Brooke fans and the Taylor fans have already started trashing Brooke/Taylor. The rivalry will never end, no matter who plays the characters.

The most discussed topic about B&B right now is not a storyline, it's Taylor's wig. In a recent Bold Live video chat with Krista Allen it was the main topic:

Krista Allen looks a lot better with her own hair than she does on the show. The good news: When B&B returns from its current winter hiatus, Taylor will be sporting a much more natural look. It will be Krista's hair!

I wasn't aware that Hunter Tylo occasionally wore a wig, but that too is mentioned in the chat by an expert.

There's been a lot of wigs, extensions and hair dying on B&B, ever since episode 1. John McCook (Eric) had to add grey to his hair in the beginning to make him look a bit older. Ronn Moss (Ridge) dyed his hair black in his last few years to look younger. Many of the actors/actresses dye their hair so they won't go grey. Darlene Conley (Sally) and Joe Mascolo (Massimo) as two examples. I believe Don Diamont (Bill) does as well. Susan Flannery (Stephanie) wore a wig between 2000-2003 because she had cancer. Lesley-Anne Down (Jackie) wore hair pieces because her real hair is very thin. Annika Noelle (Hope) had to go blonde to play Hope. She was a brunette. Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) often wear extentions as her real hair isn't that long. And of course, Diamond White (Paris) who of course isn't a natural blonde/pinkette/orangette.

It's The Hair and the Beautiful.

Ratings have dropped below B&B average recently. On the one hand I find it justified, on the other hand I am worried that if the ratings low continues, B&B will focus again on Liam's love life, because a triangle around Liam always works with the ratings. I still prefer current storylines over anything to do with Liam's love life.

Sheila continues to deserve better material. Her champagne trick would have been something funny for Amber Moore, but it's kindergarten for Sheila. It is also amazing how light-hearted Sheila is towards Taylor and says (to herself) that the good woman Taylor has forgiven her.

It perplexes me that someone like Brooke, who has sipped more champagne in the last 35 years than anyone on daytime, can’t tell the difference between non alcoholic and regular. Only Brooke!

I still don't understand how people could enjoy watching Liam's love life. It doesn't make any sense to me!

The characters of Liam and Hope turned me off the show. The fact Taylor has now been recast was the final nail in the coffin for me. R.I.P., The Bold & The Beautiful.
I have nothing against Liam and Hope as characters to be honest. I don’t blame them but without Susan, Ronn and Hunter the show has just never been the same for me. I’m currently watching the show in June of 1988 and there’s no comparison. I’m sure all these actors and writers work as hard as they can but its just not the same show anymore. It has a totally different feel to it.

It was a totally different show. It was ENJOYABLE!! I started watching in August 1988(I was 12). My last full episode was December 2012(I was 36). I literally grew up with the show. I totally get that shows change with the times, but at least they are recognizable. The show that is on the air now is NOT RECOGNIZABLE at all!! The only way I will accept all of this nonsense Eric awakes from a bad dream!!!!

To be fair, though, none of the soaps today can hold a candle to how they were produced in the 1980s, or even the 2000s. Heck, there is even a difference in style from ten years ago. Soaps went into "survival mode" around 2010, where they are simply trying to keep the show going under the impossible pressures of reduced budgets, etc. If it is enjoyable viewing, that's just incidental; they no longer have the luxury of time to work on turning out primetime-esque work. It's a struggle just to hit all the high points and make sure it holds together...and sometimes that doesn't even happen. Which is not to say they don't make an effort to turn out the best show possible....it's just that the lack of support from their networks gives them a built-in excuse to lower expectations, and that industry seems to be in a slow spiral downward.
