That Naxos International CD screams bargain bin or "exclusive supermarket release".
Interestingly, many of these releases have become sought-after oddities.
Yes - it looks comfortingly budget, doesn't it. Kind of reminds me of the old
Woolworths "Worth It" el cheapo brand. It looked tacky even back then, but nowadays it gives me waves of nostalgia.
All the Naxos International CDs I've seen have the same basic design, but with a different (and very nice) drawing in the box on the front of each. Also, all seem to be orchestrated by Richard Hayman. I only have a couple (he does the Peyton Place theme on the other one I have, but they're actually really nice arrangements).
Oooh, those James Bond CDs have the original artwork, unlike the multiple DVD and BluRay releases. I must say it looks very tempting.
They sound incredibly good as well (especially
Diamonds and
Moonraker. Apparently the master tapes for the first three films are missing, but
Goldfinger sounds as good as possible considering).
They're also making a John Barry fan of me. Despite his reputation, I've never appreciated his work as much as I feel I could have, and the previous version of
Moonraker I owned sounded off-puttingly terrible as it's from before the masters were "rediscovered". Hearing these cues in such clarity has given me a yen to explore more of his work. I have
The Deep on CD, so perhaps I'll revisit that. Also, I have
Body Heat, which I've hardly played (any album that has a track called "
Kill For Pussy" has to be worth a second go, I'd say).
Incidentally, here's an interview with the guy that produced the restoration of the Bond albums, talking specifically about
Diamonds (including a transcript on the page for anyone who prefers to read). Who knew that the familiar title track used was actually Take 20):
