What's The Real Reason Why People Don't Like Clayton?

this may have been during that one time in the series when his businesses weren’t doing well and he had to start selling.. or that other time… or the time after that..
Perhaps it was the same ring he bought for Amy many years earlier and this guy was a real cheapskate. Of course this only works if we believe she died due to illness as he told Sue Ellen. If we believe the rewrite that she died in that fire at the hands of Jessica, well, then I guess the ring was probably lost and he bought Sue Ellen a new one.

Either way I have to stop reading this thread cause my opinion of Clayton is really sinking fast.

knowing now how dastardly (and cheap) Clayton was after reading this thread, it’s quite possible that he drugged Amy so he could remove the ring before he set the ranch house ablaze..

Definitely a cheapskate and secretive. I bet he did save that said ring for Miss Ellie, very cheeky!
I said we didn't really know him and now I'm thinking he's probably guilty of the above.
Oh what have we done to poor Clayton's reputation? The more I read, the more I'm convinced he's a bit of a wrong un.

I'm on a trip to London at the mo and here I am thinking how good or bad bloody Clayton Farlow was!!

I think Clayton was a good man too........
But there's still something a bit shifty about him though, just read previous posts, the evidence is there.

Ñot sure if Miss Ellie would feel the same about him if she knew. And she was second choice!

I still reckon there was a lot we didn't know about him and that's when we start to come to our own conclusions.

Clayton was a very good man, a better man than Jock in many ways. I know most people prefer Miss Ellie with Clayton for those reasons but I still preferred her and Jock as a couple.

I think the watershed moment for the Clayton character was when he admitted to Donna and Ray that Dusty wasn’t really his son. That was the moment we realized there might have been a lot more to this character than we originally thought. In retrospect I think making Dusty Jessica’s son was a nice touch, as it certainly explained her obsession to keep Miss Ellie away from him and Clayton.

But Clayton was always likable to me regardless of the situation. Even in admitting to covering up Dusty’s true parentage all those years I still felt sorry for him despite his secrecy. I even felt sorry for the character during the entire Laurel Ellis storyline so maybe that’s all a tribute to Howard Keel and the fine actor he was. He seemed to be able to shine no matter what they had in store for Clayton storyline-wise.

I agree it was a nice touch and nicely done, but I was always a bit disappointed that Clayton wasn't Dusty's real Dad so I guess I did really like him.

Of course I loved Howard Keel and I've been fascinated how we've turned Clayton's character inside out here.
That's what I love about it; all our different views and that great way of how those views help us look at things from another perspective.

Despite Dusty’s rather carefree spirit and inability to settle down for very long, I thought he and Clayton had a rather strong father-son relationship. So yes, it was a little disappointing for me as well when they turned out to be related differently.

I guess it does take some of the awkwardness away from when Clayton fell for Sue Ellen only a few years earlier, but that never really bothered me even when I thought they were father and son. I know very few agree with me there.

That’s what’s great about these threads. We all interpret things differently because all of our brains work differently. Quite often I learn something I never knew before reading some of these threads.

I agree with you @DallasFanForever!

I found that storyline rather exciting, because it would've been so wrong and naughty, but sensitively sweet.
But I do wish Clayton had handled the whole thing differently. However I can forgive him because in the end he was there as Sue Ellen's friend and protector who often stood up to JR which I always loved.

I don´t know if this has been mentioned, but the instant when I realized that Clayton could be a real basterd was the episode when Sue Ellen reunites with Dusty at SC, and Clay doesn´t tell him he´s come with wife Linda... That hush-hush thing of not warning her was underhanded and bitchy... I could see in his head a bubble saying: "Now you f... off darling!"

- "Oh Clayton, he´s still so hunky and handsome! (I think I still have a chance!)"
- "Sure darlin. Sure... (No you don´t because he´s been taken! Haahaaaa!"

He didn't owe Sue Ellen anything. Sue Ellen wanted her cake and to eat it too. She's engaged to JR and then she had the nerve to get an attitude when she finds out that Dusty has moved on.

just look at the old scoundrel standing there leering at Sue Ellen as she walks away, hoping she’ll cast that covering (what is that, a short robe?) aside so he could get a good look at that lovely derrière!

Looks like a big white shirt. I wonder if it's Clayton's or Dusty's?

Or is it JR's?

It's not who done it?

It's "Whose is it?"

They missed a golden opportunity there for a Cliffhanger............

Wait! Oh surely she didn't keep one of Cliff's shirts?

The time after Bobby's uh humm death.
Sue Ellen waltzes in oblivious after having a lovely day shopping. Clayton had every chance to tell her about Bobby, but instead mutters "no Sue Ellen" when JR intervenes.

Clayton then stands by and allows Sue Ellen to be subjected to a JR Special verbal attack.

OK I know it didn't happen and we all dreamt it, but it did happen and I really disliked Clayton at that moment.

Under the circumstances, I don't know how else Clayton could have handled it.

Bobby had just died. Sue Ellen was not the first thing on everybody's mind -- except for JR, who wanted to use the occasion to be mean to her as usual.
Of course Sue Ellen wasn't the first thing on everybody's mind.
I just wanted Clayton to be a bit more thoughtful so Sue Ellen didn't have to face the wrath of JR which we all knew was coming.
He so say assumed the role of her protector.

Saying that Clayton had a habit of being thoughtless as evidenced in previous posts.
