They couldn't do it now because they don't have sufficient support in the senate to pass the legislation.

So if you don't think voting for pro choice Representatives and Senators in the mid terms is the solution, how do you propose giving women back their right to choose?

It could be codified now.

I propose that there is nobody who will deliver.

Rallies here in Australia have sprung up over the Roe v Wade decision. The rallies are more about pro-choice - which I strongly believe in - so I'm not sure why the need for the rallies here in Australia except to offer some support to America...oh but wait. Now they've turned political so the rallies have turned into a funding issue for our ailing public hospital system.

For as long as I've been voting our Public Hospital's have been used as a political tool to weaponize the electorate. Guess what people. The hospital is still there, in fact our State Government has built a brand new one locally. But it's still not good enough according to some.

Anybody can say they support a particular policy. It's what they do when it's necessary to act that really matters. Obama lied about codifying Roe vs. Wade, as did Biden. Biden and the Dems also promised to increase the minimum wage, cut student loan debt, and implement the public option, yet none of that happened. Obama also promised to implement the public option, and we got a right wing healthcare plan instead. He also managed to take us from two wars to seven and make the Bush tax cuts permanent.

Wars and the military budget have also flourished under Biden's presidency, as has inflation. Biden literally said Americans will have to deal with the high cost of living for "as long as it takes" to fight Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Then there's the fact that the conflict in Ukraine was egged on by US and NATO meddling. Of course, the Dems fast tracked billions in aide to Ukraine, billions to corporations during the pandemic, and only a paltry $1400 check to the rest of us. It's no wonder Biden's approval rating is so abysmal.

Establishment media is freaking out because the Dems are in danger of being wiped out in the mid terms. Dems are going to do what they do best, and that is find issues to campaign on. They won't actually do anything to solve them, and that's by design. Nancy Pelosi said that party needs to court socially conservative Trump supporters. Chuck Schumer said the party would pick up two moderate Republicans for every blue collar Democrat they lost. Does this sound like a party that cares about progressive issues?

They've made the mistake of saying the quiet part out loud too many times. Issues like abortion are just campaign candy they can run on to garner votes. Even a progressive stalwart like Bernie Sanders backs Biden and ridiculously refers to him as "the next FDR." The so-called progressive members of "the squad" were elected precisely to apply leverage to establishment Dems, but they've proven to be nothing more than virtue signaling keyboard warriors on Twitter. The Dems operate as a controlled opposition party.

It's not possible because there are not enough members of the current senate that would vote for that now which is why America need to elects more representatives and senators in the mid terms who will vote to give women the right to choose.

Frank, what's the solution then because moaning about past failures of the Democrats isn't going to bring back abortion rights but electing lawmakers who are committed to changing the law will.

Moaning about past failures of the Democrats? There's a saying that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I'm reminding people why I don't trust them. If you and others want to put your faith in their "commitment" to abortion rights, go right ahead. I suspect it will be like Lucy pulling the football from Charlie Brown once again.

As for the solution, I honestly don't know that there is one. I'd like to be proven wrong, but politics is more about fake campaign promises than actual solutions.

Voting for change is a far more positive and hopeful response than moaning about the status quo.

You keep missing my point. People have voted for change many times and still not gotten it, even when the people they voted for were elected. Barack Obama, anyone?

The most recent failed experiment was the "justice Democrats" and "the squad." They were elected to hold the establishment accountable, and ended up becoming part of it.

I totally get your point but it doesn't help the rape victims who will be forced to carry the child of their attacker, it won't help the young girls who are victims of abuse or the women who will think suicide is a better option than having their babies. These women need legislators who will vote for the changes NOW not a history lesson on past failures of the Democrats.

Yes, I agree they need that change NOW. My point is I don't believe they're going to get it, and that history lesson on past failures of the Democrats is the reason why.

The protestors who chanted "Voting blue is not enough. Democrats, we call your bluff" are right. It's time to call their bluff. We've put up with their inaction long enough.

I respect the sincerity of your opinion but I just don't agree with you because I think this is an urgent situation and some women will need assistance now.

So what are you suggesting should happen? Do nothing and accept the restrictions on female reproductive rights? Vote Republican and get even tougher restrictions? Not vote at all which lets the Republicans in by the back door?

Sometimes the way forward isn't waiting for a perfect approach but taking the best route available now.

I would never advocate voting for Republicans because they are everything I despise about Democrats (without the pretense of pretending to be compassionate.) But unless voting more Dems in led to the codifying of Roe vs. Wade, I don't see how abortion restrictions can get much tougher (although I'm sure Republicans would try to find a way.)

It is an urgent situation, but I'd argue that issues such as inflation, the minimum wage, and healthcare are just as urgent. What's being done about them? That's right, the same as what's being done about abortion rights. Why is it that Dems never have the power to do good, yet they always have the power to increase the military budget, start wars, and give billions in aide to corporations and foreign governments? I can't help but think it's all by design. I just can't bring myself to believe voting Democrat will solve anything.

Didn't the "Hands up, don't shoot!" rallies move to the streets of England where the cops don't even carry guns?

Correct again.

Sometimes the way forward isn't waiting for a perfect approach but taking the best route available now.

And sometimes the non-perfect approach doesn't work at all, either. Which is the situation now.

The Republicans have been wanting to do this for 50 years, and the Democrats having been campaigning on it just as long -- and neither party cares about the public. Even when Obama had a super-majority, he and the Dems did nothing, despite promising yet again they would.

So the desperate need for women today doesn't translate to there being anything to do about it, unless one lives in a fantasy land, as some do. Both parties will not help you. At all. Period.

Acknowledging that is not being a defeatist.

There is nothing within The System that will work. And both parties have made sure of it.

Which is why, if the Supreme Court stays on this path, as they openly imply they will, there will be blood in the streets. Physical violence is what the Court is courting -- even the justices' homes are being picketed. And while I don't condone that, one would have to be blind -- or blindly ideological in either direction -- not to see it.

Roe v Wade always did rest on a somewhat dubious foundation and in a strictly legal sense this decision is probably the correct one.
As @Frank Underwood has suggested, they should have codified it long ago instead of depending on a Constitution right which doesn't actually seem to exist.

The Supreme Court gets into a pattern of deciding -- politically -- what it wants to do, and then rationalizing it backwards "Constitutionally".

The one good thing which might come from the looming arch-conservative wave is that it might wake up the "woke" pseudo-left into focusing on the correct things for once.

But I won't hold my breath.

In their last gurgle on the sidewalk, as their eyes are dripping onto the pavement from the nuclear holocaust we've unleashed, they'll just spew something about "microaggressions," completely missing the macroaggression which has just befallen them.

...Although, I realize "microaggression" is so totally 2017.

I had hoped there would be a similar awakening after Trump won in 2016, but the pseudo-left just parroted MSNBC talking points blaming Russia and "Bernie bros."

Even the more intelligent members of the pseudo left aren't willing to cut ties with the Democratic Party. Jimmy Dore posted a clip of a journalist interviewing a gen z woman about Roe vs. Wade. She said "This is the Democrats fault. They let this happen. We let this happen. I mean, look at the majority that Obama had in his first term. And nothing... The Republicans have been saying that they were going to do this for 50 years since Roe was passed, they've been saying they were going to do this. And they did it. And they're not stopping there, this is just the beginning. This is just the start. So, I blame the Democrats. Unfortunately, I'm voting blue like I always have, but this is their fault. "

Such great analysis, but it's ruined by misplaced loyalty. That unwavering allegiance is why Lawrence O'Donnell said the Democratic Party doesn't have to listen to the left.

I take a broader view than you on this issue and think the mental health of a woman should also be a significant factor in whether or not she can have an abortion.
My position is largely an intellectual one since I'm not personally affected by it; the life of the woman is tantamount to self-defence (as Ronald Reagan put it). Unfortunately. what we have is a conflict between two sets of right which is probably irreconcilable. But I I do understand the point you're making and I find the extremes of the pro-lifers to be disgusting.

Yes, I think an uncomfortable, ambivalent in-the-middle perspective is the only reasonable, morally healthy position on the topic. And lots of people have no inclination to simmer there ambiguously, so they adopt their side's hard line (so it just becomes another "power" thing).

Some pro-lifers care not if the woman has been incestuously raped or 11-years old or whose life is in danger, and they demand she have the baby anyway -- although their position on gun rights and the death penalty seems to indicate that the Sanctity of Human Life is not a consistent concern for them (and let's not forget the rash of murders of abortion clinic doctors that went on for a while).

Meanwhile, some of the pro-choicers celebrate the idea of getting pregnant so they can abort their fetuses and grill them at a barbecue -- which would be kind of funny unless you realize that they're half-serious.

That's how I view abortion as well. I'm pro-choice because I recognize there are special circumstances where abortion is the most humane option. However, there are some pro-choice folks who view abortion in the most cavalier way. And God forbid the father have an opinion on the subject, lest he be shouted down with "My body, my choice!"
