Today I finally got to watch THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE for the first time since I was a child. I hadn't seen it from I was about 8 or 9 years old. I really enjoyed it, though as an adult I noticed there were possibly one or two songs that went on a bit too long. But I'm s sucker for fairy tales and musicals and this one was right up my street. I loved the King played by Michael Hordern. He had some of the best, witty lines in the film. I also liked Annette Crosbie as a very different Fairy Godmother and Margaret Lockwood as the wicked Stepmother. And the ugly sisters were a young Sherrie Hewson and Rosiland Ayres. The songs weren't all that great to be honest but I thought the film was humorous and lovely to look at. Always a pleasure to look at a young Richard Chamberlin! :p

A very predictable, run-of-the-mill movie, even if it had been a made-for-tv movie. The house wasn't that impressive and the story wasn't about the house anyway.

@Alexis, The Slipper And The Rose, I also love fairy tales...but was it non-stop singing?
No it's not nonstop there is a fair bit of dialogue in it. I found the songs I didn't really like to be the ones that went on too long. The ones I did like were too short. I did really like the film though. It's fun and sweet and nostalgic.

EDIT- I also have no idea what the rose part in the title is about? Unless Cinderella is supposed to be the Prince's rose. There is one brief scene with a petal falling from a rose but that's a bit vague.

Supergirl, which has Faye Dunaway at her campest - getting into a war with Supergirl over Cecil Colby's son. Then there's Peter Cook chewing the furniture along with her.

Watching Dunaway and her snarky sidekick Brenda Vaccaro trading lines always makes me feel like I'm watching a bizarre crossover featuring Alexis Carrington and Laura Avery.

I think I may have to work this film into my Super re-watches. ;)

Well, I did just that and re-watched last night.

Great fun. It doesn't get any better, but that's part of the appeal.

I don't have the will to face Superman III or (god forbid) The Quest For Peace this time around. But I do intend to re-watch Superman Returns as part of my January Super-watch. I haven't seen it in some years, but as I recall it follows the continuity of the first two films (and the radio report in Supergirl about Superman being on a mission light years away from earth) and ignores the latter two Reeve films.

How did you like it, EB?

I really enjoyed this one and thought it had a good balance of satire and excitement.
Yes, I enjoyed it.

As you say it was a comedy action film in the vein of Red, Red 2, hot fuzz etc.

That said, I'm a little surprised it was only given a 15 certificate based on the amount of gratuitous violence - especially the fight sequences in the church, just before Colin Firth's character is killed.

I believe a sequel is to be released later this year, presumably without either Firth or Michael Caine as both their characters were killed off in the film.

Also, I wonder if Samantha Janus was on a break from Eastenders when she filmed her part and whether she could reprise her role in a sequel?

I completely disagree with you (but only this time...if I may). I loved this movie. I saw it as a tribute to the gothic dramas, especially those filmed in Italy in the 70´s and 80´s (the "giallos", I think). The three actors are totally superb in their roles, from Wasikowska (who is great in everything she does, but it´s time for her to begin to play adult women...) to Hiddleston and Chastain. And the FX of the "ghost" (so to say) are horrifying...I also liked del Toro´s magnificent direction and his choice of Art Director and D.of Photography, just perfect. And if you watched a movie about possessions, would you hate it because there is a child and a mystery house in it? Or would just enjoy and try to be entertained? I did, and very much. Alexis, I´d give it a try if you like gothic dramas.

I also watched another movie,"The Stranger", that is similar to CP in the sense that it doesn´t want to discover or experiment with anything, only telling a story very elegantly, this time about the people "under siege". It stars Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman (who looks as hot as ever). It´s from 2008 but it´s an ok way to spend 1,30 h. on a Sunday afternoon, especially in good company...

This pic isn´t from the movie, but I thought some of you would like it...
Yes, it´s Mr. Speedman, and yes, he shaves his chest.

But a tribute to the gothic dramas doesn't automatically makes it gothic. Actually, I thought that part was painfully missing. I wasn't looking for a complex story.
Also, the house didn't look as magnificent as I thought it would be, and it wasn't very spooky either (Woman In Black 2012 did a much better job).

On their own, perhaps. But as an ensemble there was zero chemistry.

But I'm glad you enjoyed it:)

I was interested because it seemed like a gothic spooky house film. Though I was afraid it would be an over stylized CGI thing and I think it is that. That often just distracts me too much from a film.

I'm a big fan of scary/haunted house movies, and I often find the house (or place) more creepy than the ghosts or any other strange creatures.
It's all about suggestion and possibilities - the terror that's lurking in the shadows, paintings, mirrors.
Rose Red, with its changing passages and optical illusions is still one of my favourites.
The ghosts/creatures in Crimson Peak took the suspense out of it, and it didn't make much sense either, especially in the grand scheme of things. Because, well, no-one actually cared about it.
