I saw the announcement of Philece Sampler's passing and read with great interest the conversations among younger people who only knew her for her extensive voice acting career, having voiced a whole host of cartoon characters in her post-soaps life. Sampler did a good job with the material she was given in the FauxDonna period, but the character she played was Donna Love in name only. The show was incredibly short-sighted in that whole effort to "re-imagine" the character of Donna, since the vast majority of fans had no problem with how Donna had behaved previously! It was like "It ain't broke, but let's fix it anyway." I'll forever remember her being swallowed up in a huge (real) fur coat with a matronly hairdo, being styled by the show to look older than she really was.

Hogan was my favorite Vince, even though another actor was playing him when I first started watching. I think he and Denise Alexander (as Mary) were magical. This was a period when most of AW's most popular couples were in a more "mature" category (Mary/Vince, Donna/Michael, Mac/Rachel of course, and Sharlene/John). Hogan also played really well against Stephen Schnetzer (Cass), treating Cass with a slight air of mistrust and dislike no matter how much they shared a love of Kathleen. Vince was kind of put off by Cass's crazy schemes and the insane situations he found himself involved with; he rarely found it "amusing" the way many of the other characters did.

Any fans of AW should visit YouTube user Chase4everchase as he has a ton of early 80s episodes.

There is also a long playlist called Carl's Redemption which is well worth a look.

Earlier this year I watched aw episodes on YouTube starting g with august 1, 1980, the final 90 minute episode where Russ and Tracy were married.

Once I finished 1980 I decided to go to Eddie druedings aw homepage which has comprehensive synopsis starting from the first episode. Currently I’m halfway through 1966. Missy ran off to Chicago after learning Katherine was her bio mother and Liz ripped missy apart. John is currently in a wheelchair following the accident where he chased after lee when it came to light she purposely went after Tony to steal him from Alice as revenge against pat

The synopsis include producer notes and some scene dialogue with stage direction.

I’m a way it’s like reading a good book with extras. It’s also a nice way to essentially “watch” aw from the beginning.

And Alice Barrett has what seems to be a significant role in the new Starz series Heels, as the mother of the main characters played by Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig.

Amy Carlson on reuniting with Julian McMahon, remembering AW...

Funny with Julian on AW, because David Hedison was on that show before Jill Farren Phelps axed him for being too old as she was chasing the young demographics , and Julian later went on to work with David's Bond co-star Robert Davi for the whole run of Profiler. (Ally Walker of Santa Barbara also starred with Robert and Julian before leaving after Season 3 and being replaced by Jamie Luner).

Which reminds me....

After the very famous break-up of the relationship between AW's Anne Heche and Ellen deGeneres, deGeneres began a four-year relationship with Alexandra Hedison, daughter of AW's David Hedison. Alexandra Hedison is currently married to Jodie Foster.

I'm not sure if that was the play in question, but a talent scout from Procter and Gamble's production company (producer of soap operas) saw her performing in a high school play and approached her mother about signing Anne to a contract role on As The World Turns. Her mother did not like the idea of her daughter not finishing high school "properly" (in a school, as opposed to an on-set tutor situation), so they turned down the offer. P&G instead offered the contract role to Marisa Tomei, playing the best friend of Julianne Moore's character. Two years later, the casting agent from P&G who still remembered her asked her to audition for the role of Vicky Hudson on Another World. So Anne obviously made quite an impression on them to be remembered two years later. She really was brilliant in the Vicky role, just hitting it out of the park from the beginning scenes. The actress she had replaced was only playing Vicky (her twin sister Marley was 'out of town') but once they brought Marley back to interact with her twin sister, it was even more fun. A lot of soaps have done the "one actor playing twins" thing over the decades, but her time as 'the girls' would easily rank as one of the best.

This still brings tears to my eyes after thirty years. No soap today can even attempt this sort of thing,

Then there is this more extensive display of the differences between the twins....

(PS Donna didn't really shoot Jake, BTW)

The only actor I've come across to play dual roles who could totally convince you that they were two separate characters. She was so good. All of this in her late teens, early 20s yet seemed so much older, not in looks but just seemed. I don't often get caught up in star deaths but this really is sad to me.

The hits just keep coming, don't they? I wasn't totally on board with RG's version of Maggie, but I liked the rapport RG's Maggie had with Vicky Wyndham's Rachel. I think they were hoping for an energy similar to Ada/Rachel with them, but that was not going to ever happen again.

What got left out (and I can see why) is that Griggs's dismissal from AW likely occurred because she was dating John Wayne Bobbitt, who was following up on his infamous claim to fame by trying to launch a career in porno movies. If you're too young to know about him.....well, consider yourself privileged. Griggs's dismissal, however, facilitated one of the most horrendous stints I've ever seen on daytime, when Jodi Lyn O'Keefe was (too quickly) hired to replace Griggs. The poor girl was totally out of her depth, and though she went on to better performances elsewhere, her Maggie was a daily dose of second-hand embarrassment.
