*I haven't seen Candleshoe since it aired on TV some time in the Eighties, but it was one of my favourite cosy Christmas holiday viewing experiences and conjures up very fond memories.

After reading that I was reminded of watching it years and years ago and liking it. I watched it again last night, found it online and love it. There is an obvious nod to the 1956 film Anastasia where Helen Hayes basically plays the same character. I never noticed that before. lol David Niven was also great in it playing the entire household staff.

Jane Wyman is also in "All That Heaven Allows" by Sirk.

I love The Sound Of Music. I admit I don't remember Mary Poppins that well, but I went to the Sound of Music tour when I went to Austria a few years back. It was so much fun.

Great post Toni. I love how you compare his style to Dallas. It's both melodramas and yeah I think you are on to something. I love the closing shot of "All that Heaven Allows."

I hadn't either until I was studying film. Our teacher made us watch "All That Heaven Allows" in class and I just loved it.

Jane Wyman portrays a young widow named Helen, who is attracted to a playboy who indirectly caused her husband's death. The playboy is portrayed by Rock Hudson and he does anything he can to help Helen after she is blinded. The movie is based on a book by: Lloyd C Douglas from 1929. It is a romantic melodrama directed by Douglas Sirk. It is also a remake of a 1935 movie. Jane Wyman was nominated for an Oscar for this part.

This is another Jane Wyman & Rock Hudson movie. In it Wyman portrays Cary a young widow who falls in love with a younger man portrayed by Hudson. They get engaged to be married but their relationship is not accepted by their friends and family. It's a romantic melodrama directed by Douglas Sirk and in 1995 the US National Film Registry selected it for preservation. The movie is based on a book by: Harry and Edna L. Lee.

Okay so it's time for another star next and some of you are going to love this choice and some of you are going to be less thrilled.
But anyway our next star is:



Dame Joan Collins is an English actress and author, who was born on 23rd May, 1933 in London, England. She grew up during the Second World War and made her stage debut in A Doll’s House at the age of 9. She enrolled at the Royal Academic of Dramatic Art School in London. She got her first film contract with the Rank Organization and then at the age of 22 she moved to Hollywood where she got a movie contract with FOX. She then worked in Hollywood for a couple of years filming movies together with the crème de la crème of tinsel town. In the 1970s she embarked on a new career as an author, perhaps she was inspired by her younger sister Jackie’s success in that field.


Joan Collins has an impressive career that spans over 7 decades. She has several movies from the golden age of Hollywood on her resume and yet to the younger generation Joan Collins is best known as Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter in the hit 80’s TV-series Dynasty (1981-1989). A part she landed in the second act of her career and which made her a household name and globally celebrated TV star. Yet let us focus on her movie career for this list, so out of all her movies which one is your favorite?
