Watching the eagles

A warm Spring day on the Lipstick/Guy nest.

The eaglet's mouths open, panting from the heat.

Look at those faces. Lunar and Celeste are so cute in a baby eagle kinda way.

Lunar and Celeste have discovered their beaks can actually lift things...
It's just wonderful seeing their progress. Now that Lunar and Celeste have learnt that their beaks useful tools can we expect that they notice their wings soon?

Or is it still too early for them? I'm guessing that the eaglets will need adult plumage to facilitate flight?

Good photos.

Good photos.
At some point they'll explore the limbs of the tree but not until they have their full feathers. Their parents will feed them for as long as we can view them on the cam.

Yes they do look cute. When might Lunar and Celeste become more independent of their parents? How long until there adult form appears?

This image that @Long Lashes provided tells the story of their growth and when they fledge.

fluffs-developement.jpg

All of the eaglets we watch are nearly a month in age so we are not even half-way through this season We are maybe on Week 5?). Many years it takes until mid-summer for them to leave the nest. They may fly away but return for meals or a nice place to sleep.

My bad. I feel that I have already been schooled on this.

That said, I am feeling that I am now invested in the trials and tribunaltions of both pairs and their off spring.

Are Eagles ubiquitous in America or like over here where I understand that some birds of prey are on the in danger list. Amazingly there is a trade in bird eggs that adds to the decline in population

Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles are not endangered as they were a few decades ago. As a child I hardly ever saw an eagle or hawk in the wild. Now I see at least two Red-tailed Hawks on my way to work each day. They are making a comeback.

Aw so do I :( I was looking at some photos of him earlier and he looked so frail, but was full of character.

He's one little chap we will never forget, we've not experienced one of the eaglets pass away before have we? I know we have had an egg which didn't hatch, but having #4 leave us has been incredibly sad.

That's a great photo Michelle
Its fascinating to see their feathers coming through, I think it must be very itchy because they're forever preening. In fact, every time I tune in to watch them they're all (both nests) either preening, feeding or sleeping off a big meal

It's just occurred to me none of the eaglets ever drink do they? they must get all their hydration from the food.

Here we have Lunar or Celeste taking a cheeky bite of Freedoms tail ...

I don't think he was very amused because he soon flew off .. Lol!

its just as well all three don't practise at the same time, they're all so big now that they'd run out of space.

They seem to be fascinated in watching the world around them ...

There has been some controversy on the Liberty/Freedom nest chat as many viewers seem to no think Liberty is not Liberty. It's another female Bald Eagle we all assumed was Liberty. I haven't caught much of why they think this but I read-up on this drama on the nest. If this isn't Liberty the who is it and what happened to Liberty?

Aw so do I :( I was looking at some photos of him earlier and he looked so frail, but was full of character.
If only he had survived. What a full nest that would have been.
It's just occurred to me none of the eaglets ever drink do they? they must get all their hydration from the food.

Indeed! The blood of the fallen. :yikey:

Do you think its not Liberty too Michelle? What a shocker, has Guy brought home a different bird? (literally). If this is not Liberty then I want to know what happened to her.

I need to do some investigating myself, I have loads of photos of the real Liberty from the last couple of years, so I will compare and see if they look different. This really is like an ongoing Soap Opera.

The nest is starting to look much smaller as the eaglets grow ...

The two on the left were watching one of the cleaners (starling) down below. This reminds me, I was watching one of the cleaners hopping on and off the nest this morning and it was pinching bits of straw. At first I thought "cheeky thief" and then I realised that because its nest is directly under the Eagles it was in fact, strengthening the foundations..Lol!

----------------------------------------------------------

Indeed! The blood of the fallen. :yikey:
That's so true, these Eagles are very gory. We sure need strong stomachs for some of the sights we see

Here's Liberty .. or is it Liberty? Anyway, she is looking a bit blood soaked ...

They are certainly content with each other at this stage.

I usually can't even tell Liberty from Freedom when they are on the nest so to know if Liberty is the same as before it's beyond me. I had read several addicted watcher state that she was not Liberty by her markings. Liberty was a good bit older than Freedom but seemed fine last year. I don't know what to think.

A soap opera indeed. I hope you can determine if Liberty is real or if she was recast for this season.

Wow, they are quite large. Just imagine what this nest would look like if #4 had survived. We love and need the cleaners in our lives.

I'm no expert, but she looks exactly the same to me.

A soap opera indeed. I hope you can determine if Liberty is real or if she was recast for this season.
If this is a Soap Opera its the finest one I've ever watched

We've had (suspected) new partners, new babies, unexpected accidents (falling out of the nest), a very sad death and a part-time cast of an Owl, squirrels, Starlings, Blue-Jays and a Wood-pecker popping in and out of the storylines.

I won't list the daily murders :fp:
