What's The Real Reason Why People Don't Like Clayton?

Again, Clayton going after his son's ex was a bad look, but as far as that other stuff, OK, he wasn't perfect. But as usual, JR can somehow corrupt good people.

Clayton was out of place punching JR at his wedding, but let's not act as if JR didn't have it coming. He did freeze his oil not too long before that.

Yes, he probably should have gracefully declined co-ownership of Southfork, but that was Miss Ellie's decision. You want to get mad at someone, get mad at Miss Ellie.

And no, Clayton didn't endanger everyone by not telling them about his sister Jessica. He didn't know she was THAT looney. Plus, JR had an hand in that situation when he and Jessica were plotting to stop the wedding. Unlike JR, who have gotten people killed and could have gotten his son and wife killed dealing with BD Calhoun.

And what exactly made Jock a tougher man than Clayton?

So Ellie, Pam and Clayton are the shits of the family. Fascinating.
That seems an overstatement. I think the point is that Miss Ellie, Pam and Clayton all did things that were questionable
with regard what was right, and that they are perhaps not held accountable for those things as much as the other characters.

Your observations are interesting, can't say that I agree though.
Just because JR had misdeeds, it does not excuse Clayton, or anyone else for their choices.
Clayton had agitated JR which was why he froze the oil in the first place
Clayton did indeed know his sister had issues
Never compared the toughness of the two. It might be more accurate to say that the viewer knows more about Jock's past than Clayton's.
Miss Ellie was indeed disrespectful of Jock and his heirs by giving half of SF to Clayton.
If Miss Ellie predeceased Clayton, Jock's heirs would have no claim to the property

Maybe we just have to agree to disagree.

Poor ol’ Clayton seems to be the focus of all kinds of projection in some of these posts. My major gripe is that the character was under developed. He really didn’t do much after he sold his main business interests and The Southern Cross. For years he lumbered dutifully behind Miss Ellie from porch to house, living room to dining room, and elevator to table when dining a deux at the Oil Baron’s. Keel had acting chops but they were rarely exercised.

I feel the Sue Ellen-Clayton-Miss Ellie soap triangle was nipped in the bud. Not that I expected Sue Ellen and Miss Ellie to do a catfight in the swimming pool but it could have been much more than what we got.
and if not that, then Rebecca-Clayton-Ellie. Did Clayton even tell Miss Ellie at all that he had once had romantic feelings for Sue Ellen? I can’t remember… I think we may have seen Rebecca look a bit hurt that Clayton was with Ellie, but nothing beyond that.

J.R. told that in a scene with Miss Ellie and Sue Ellen when he ranted about the Farlows, even thought it might have been pure speculation at that point. But Miss Ellie was aware.
Miss Ellie asked Clayton outright after witnessing how close they were (once they made up after Clayton was disappointed in Sue Ellen when she asked him to help JR).

Clayton had previously told Miss Ellie when he ran into her he had feelings for someone and had gone away to clear his head.

Miss Ellie asked Clayton when they were out for dinner if the woman he had feelings for was Sue Ellen. He admitted it was and reassured her it was over now and that nothing ever happened between them. He said he had tried to tell Sue Ellen how he felt but couldn't get through to her!

During the Holly Harwood fiasco Sue Ellen ended up in Clayton's hotel room drunk where she spent the night and offered herself to Clayton. Clayton didn't tell Miss Ellie until she turned up the next morning to find Sue Ellen there.

Miss Ellie overheard Clayton and JR arguing and had to be split up by Bobby,
JR said, "you've got a lot of gall, you're in love with my wife, you're courting my mother" when Clayton warned he would protect Sue Ellen against JR.

Crikey it was all going on! I hadn't realised how much until I was writing it.
