Dallas To Get Remastered In HD

Can you imagine Marilee at Southfork? Her relationship with John Ross Ewing III?

“Finish your breakfast and then get to school you little snot-nosed runt.”

Yes, I can definitely see the entertainment value in having Marilee at Southfork in those later years. Could’ve been epic!

The cartel all but disappeared in the later years. That's who Lady Jessica should have slaughtered, her having blackmailed them all for decades with the story they'd all fathered Dusty (someone else came up with that idea, and it's great).

I mean, Kristin did it to Jordan Lee, so why wouldn't Lady Montford (who wasn't such a lady after all!)?

If it wasn't for that crazy Katherine...
Or crazy Katzman?!
Hate seeing how cruel JR is here, even when I know what's coming. Clayton standing by letting it happen, Miss Ellie I can forgive.
Poor Pam....at the end of this season all her grief and tears would be as though it didn't happen.
Thank you as always for the clip in glorious HD @Garry

I like how Barbara Bel Geddes didn’t wear Donna Reed’ outfit in her return, even though it’ supposed to be the same day. Instead, Ellie has returned to her frumpwear.

She went to "Sacks-are-Us" which is near "Mr. David", you know, the beauty parlor in the hospital where Swellin had her hair cut...

...Though, like with Marilyn, I think she was pretty in them too.

Yes, I referenced this in the following thread:

Did Donna Reed's Miss Ellie have any redeeming features

Her sense of "fashion" was more LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE than one of a more affluent wife and matriarch of an oil dynasty. She might as well have been wearing a t-shirt, overalls, and a pair of Nike's. Oh, wait a minute! She actually may have worn that on an episode!

But in all seriousness, Miss Eleanor Southworth Ewing Farlow was a woman of the land. She loved her ranch and she did not put on airs. She was "salt-of-the-earth". Donna Reed's Ellie with the Aqua-Net football helmet hair-do and haute couture was just not Miss Eleanor Southworth Ewing Farlow, at least not the one we had grown to love since the beginning of the series or the one envisioned by her creator, Mr. David Jacobs.

Donna Reed was a lovely actress but she was simply wrong for this role. Her approach was way too polished and mannered to the point of coming off as almost wooden.

Love this. The rightful Miss Ellie had returned. The writing and direction was on point. Dallas should have reached for the stars during this season after the death of Bobby.

Yeah, I wonder why on earth they changed direction?

Was it anything to do with Steve Forrest as Ben Stivers who was supposed to be Jock?

Or did they not want to have Pam and JR at each others throats? Because they seemed to dilute the Ewing Barnes feud right down during this season. :)

J.R's cruelty brings on Sue Ellen's quivering lip...
Wow!! Thank you @Garry One of the many scenes I know off by heart and how it normally looks. Those colours really pop, especially Sue Ellen's red blouse, the nursery colours and everybody's features. Everything is so clear and vivid it's as though I could feel it if I touched the screen.

Yeah the episode footage looks lovely and pristine, such a shame that far too many mistakes on the opening credits sequence and the closing credits have marred the remastering of the show.

They don't need to release it on Blu-ray now because that would be an insult to David Jacobs and everyone else who worked on the show who were part of Lorimar.

Such a shame not enough care was taken with the show's credit sequences. Whilst new fans probably won't care or notice any differences us veteran fans can't help but be massively disappointed in the ineptitude and lack of competency in updating or redoing of those sequences. :(

I agree with this. When I mentioned the glaring errors on Facebook some rude person commented that if I didn't like it I should "just skip" the opening credits. The audacity! More care should have been taken when re-mastering the opening and closing credit sequences. I don't care what anybody says, but they are part of the show and part of my viewing experience! Is it too much to ask for historical accuracy when preserving a classic show like DALLAS or do we just settle for mediocrity?

I would not purchase this on Blu-ray if it is released the way it is now. I'll go as far as to say that I wish Warners would have remastered the opening tags from the show and included them for the sake of completeness.

Just look at the opening credits to Season 9, Episode 7 of the new remaster for a sample of the glaring incompetence at hand.

Unfortunately this is par for the course when it comes to studios remastering TV shows in HD. Some examples are Friends which was remastered into widescreen which then show the sides of the sets, actors not acting and characters who suddenly turn into other people (doubles used for certain reverse shots).
Cheers has had to replace integral pieces of music with library music, ruining entire plot points and the list goes on…

I’m really glad I saw this thread before the Blu-ray is released as it convinced me I needed to get the DVD Boxset instead. Whilst it’s annoying how ropey the picture quality can be at times, I’m glad I get the episodes are they originally aired (well as good as!).

I've always been critical of changing 4:3 to 16:9 by lopping off the tops and bottoms of the picture but that would be even worse. How can they think that's a good idea?

Yeah, I'm glad I got my boxed set when I did.

I'll never understand why they chose to deviate from the Ewing/Barnes conflict. If it was ever going to escalate the rivalry between the two warring families it was after the death of Bobby. Heck, even Cliff's reaction upon hearing of the death of Bobby and where it occurred seem to indicate what lies ahead. I'd go so far to have Pam and Miss Ellie have an almighty row at Southfork.

The writers appeared to be heading down this path with Pam confronting JR on a few occasions with his constant harassment of Cliff but especially so when Pam learns of JR's involvement with having her island hopping looking for Mark. Her confrontation in JR's office was one of the best stand-out scenes in the history of Dallas..."You filthy snake!"

I agree that Bobby's death was handled in a, dare I say, rather tame way, after JR's few brutal put downs of his wife and other brothers. Our Dallas then became a little sickly sweet, as did JR. But no woman, not even Pam, would be allowed to get the better of JR. Would the viewers really of wanted or approved of that? Was Pam really strong enough for it?
I also loved the scenes where Pam and JR had a good old showdown, even from the early days, but they were too rare and too far apart. I'm also always a bit disappointed that Pam only ever got to call him "you slime" or as you stated "filthy snake". I know we couldn't have Pam using bad words, but I always hoped for something a bit stronger from her.
I also wanted the old Pam back in these seasons, she was sometimes there, but too inconsistently.

It seems to go back to Katzman and his desire to keep the women "reined in." One of his public complaints about the dream season, run by other people, was that "JR was deceived by women."

I mean, like, duh!

There were plenty of times JR was "deceived by women" while Katzman was running DALLAS, but I guess Uncle Lenny was signing off on those deceptions, so it was fine.
