Dallas To Get Remastered In HD

In retrospect I detested the dream season resolution but in this video I appreciate the subtle touch by the writers and director when Pam hears a car starting its engine and she quickly turns only to realise it must be one of the neighbours.
All these years later and I have to admit that I’ve softened on the dream explanation just a little. I hated it for many years but after a year of having Bobby dead only for him to return was not a bad thing looking back. The show needed him and we got another year of Bobby and Pam together. The scene you mention with Pam looking over her shoulder for Katherine only for Katherine not to be there this time is a nice counter scene to the end of Swan Song. It’s perfect symmetry. Would I have preferred an explanation other than the dream? Yes, absolutely I would’ve but I’m learning to live with it.

Yes, actually by then Dallas looked worse than ever before, as that was the time they started editing on video, it was abysmal.
Old version:

You are all right, I thought that only this scene was better than the entire 1986-1987 season. And instead the comparison highlights the much higher quality of the HD version :)

A House Divided contains one of Dallas' most emotional scenes, full of pathos and intense feelings.

However, it is also a rather 'dated' scene since now children, whether married or not, easily leave their childhood home.

Yeah I can remember reading in another thread that Barbara Bel Geddes initially had trouble turning on her waterworks and start crying. I can't remember how she overcame it but looking at the scene the tears are quite clearly fully flowing. Wonderful actor, I miss her and Jim Davis very much. :(

Sadly that scene probably wouldn’t mean as much today considering how the family dynamic has changed in the last 40 years. It would be much harder for people to take that scene seriously now and I bet many would even find it laughable.

Yeah well apparently Barbara Bel Geddes herself found it funny, as did Patrick and Jim when they were filming it.

It was mentioned in another thread, I can't remember which one though. :)

Miss Ellie clearly fears the distance, being separated from her sons, living far away. This isn't the same as children moving out of their parent's house who stay in the same city. In "From A House Divided" Sue Ellen almost gleeful points out how J.R. drove Gary and Valene away from Southfork. That was, as we know, especially hard for Miss Ellie. She just doesn't want another son far away from Dallas or Texas (Bobby doesn't know where to move to). Also: Miss Ellie is a traditionalist, she doesn't like changes. I think the writers built it up over three seasons how the absent Gary would regularly turn up as a sore thumb in Miss Ellie's life. She doesn't want to happen it again. Anyone who can relate to that probably doesn't find the scene laughable.

That's the story and not the adult son who wants to move into his first own apartment because he can't stand his older brother any longer - but this gave Miss Ellie of course also a real motive to shoot J.R.!

You make a lot of valid points that I agree with. I for one definitely never found that scene laughable but I can see how some viewers would looking at it from a 2023 perspective. As you stated, there’s a lot more going on there than just a son announcing he’s leaving home. It’s about the drama between Jock and Bobby, Bobby feeling he was wronged, Miss Ellie losing another son quite possibly, etc. I agree with all of that but I can also see how some would view that scene differently nowadays.

Listen carefully to the words Bobby is conveying to Ray. In part he says..."I don't know how much reconstructive surgery..." Those words tell me the writers were laying the foundation for a possible recast.
And they had one with Margret Michaels.... morons blew it so lousy.

Awful season, but man! That looks as if it was made yesterday! April as dumb and obnoxious as ever!

But Duffy wanted out, so what were they supposed to do? Recast Bobby as well and then bring the old actor back after a year like with Ellie?
NO. should not have killed him off in a permanent way. COMA--- wake him up when he wants to return. Kill him off if he doesn't want a return. So simple.

Any from the first season! I wanna see ole' Jim Davis proud and strong!

Thank you very much Garry for these images. The quality is spectacular. Gorgeous colors and impressive degree of definition. Do you think the next step will be TV movies, or will we have more photos from previous seasons?? Thank you for everything.

Thank you Garry. I’ve just purchased a season 6 episode on iTunes (” Jock’s Will”) and the difference between this remastered version and the washed-out episode available for free on Amazon is simply unbelievable. Everything is clear and the colors are amazing. The actors come alive as if the show had only been recently filmed. An effort well worth it.

Now, if only Knots Landing was coming next! I would jump on the opportunity to rewatch that show in HD glory, or at all… (I watched “Jock’s Will” because of Gary’s crossover from California).

Thanks Garry! I still don't understand why Warner Bros offical page(s) is(are) silent about HDallas. Effort in remastering, none commercial/official announcement yet, and available out of the blue on Apple. They promote months ahead new movie releases and tv nonsense like Big Bang Theory. 100 year WB promotion video, without new surprises in it. Hbo Max plans, then Warner hits Tubi and Roku, now Apple. Strange, strange. But ok, bring Knots Landing out of the blue asap! I'm ready!

Yes, and it can so confusing as to which and what is being discussed.... The DVDs for Season 10 looked 300% better than when it originally aired in 1986/87, because as you say, that horrid video editing thing was beyond awful. Still, there was room for much additional improvement from even the DVDs -- and it looks like now we have it.

Will the remastering make the later seasons "feel" any better now that they look so good?? When DYNASTY's late-Season 6 thru 8 originally aired in 1986 thru 1988, they didn't use the "Lorimar blur" of the same era, but something else just as awful (something incredibly grainy) for their original broadcast prints, but the Region 1 DVDs were nearly pristine, so it was like seeing them for the first time..... it almost made them seem slightly "better" as a result, but only kinda-sorta.
