So True. The actors of a previous era served their country with honor in WW2, and didn't participate in divisive woke political activities

free speech are intolerant to the point of name calling, ostracizing, belittling and cancelling those who don't agree with them
How many people have been publicly harangued on the news media and social media for remarks that are decades old?
Conservative speakers are silenced on college campuses . Books by beloved icons like Dr Seuss have been banned!
Diversity is a desirable goal, but not when a checklist is required for projects that need the best available talent,
resulting in watered down, mediocre outcomes.

The free exchange of ideas is the basis of a healthy society, and the Founding Fathers wisely prioritized it,
They would be horrified at the selective censorship that is now too commonplace

No Dr. Seuss books have been banned. His estate (HIS FAMILY) decided to have several of his books taken out of print. That is their right, as those books are their property.

Books ARE being banned all over the country right now. In my own county it is constant. But I guess I can't talk about that here. Sure wouldn't want to be accused of being a "woke leftist."

What has this got to do with the Oscars? No one commented on banning of books. There were no extreme leftist agendas on display. Most of the politics was about Ukraine. People who wear blue and white badges and ribbons criticising other for virtue signalling is the height of hypocrisy.

Actors from Hollywood's golden age were as political, if not more so, than actors today. One of them became President for goodness sake, how can you be less political than that? James Stewart made war propaganda films and Bette Davis started the Hollywood Canteen and many of the major stars of the era worked there to support the war effort including Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Donna Reed, Jane Wyman and Gregory Peck. Elizabeth Taylor was an HIV and AIDS activist and Charlton Heston was a high profile supporter of gun rights.

I find it telling that a discussion about the ill-advised behavior of one actor has turned into a complaint thread about "woke" Hollywood.

There wasn't much political content at all last night (the Ukraine mentions aside), yet people (who obviously didn't watch the show) are complaining about how "leftist" it was.

Will Smith shouldn't have hit Chris Rock. Having said that, I think everyone is making more of it that Rock himself is. If he isn't outraged enough to press charges, seems to me others shouldn't be so outraged on his behalf.

As someone else said, the worst part about this is that no one is talking about all the deserving and talented winners - including Smith himself.

The show this year was far less political than it's been for years -- they brought in a new team to produce it (many have argued the ratings have been falling sharply for several years due to excessive woke virtue signaling). There is also a difference between reasonable leftwing commentary and the regressive woke crap of recent years, but the wokesters don't recognize that difference. Yet rational lefties do.

i don't mind her to be honest and I've been a fan of Smith's since i was a kid we are apparently 10 years apart me and Will Smith are. i didn't hear the joke so i dunno what he said nor i have i gone looking for it either. but if Rock Crossed the line i can understand him losing his temper but i give Rock major props for not filing charges.
and for Smith Apologizing. i read today that though they did say post those on social media they haven't spoken since nor has Rock Forgiven him and i can't say that i blame him. but at least Rock is keeping quiet and not making things worse
