I can't answer your question based on your story as I have no idea what's going on and again your post had a bunch of spoilers for me. Serves me right for peaking into this thread Anyway I am still reading your story from the beginning so I wanted to ask you will there be an update of "The Last Years of Southfork" soon?

Also to determine your question I need to know, in which timeline does your story take place?

If it takes place before 2017 I see no reason why Dusty can't remain alive.

But I do understand your dilemma as my sister Jenny and I have also been faced with the actors dying since we started writing our story. So far we have not killed off any of the characters even if the actors have passed and right now we are still writing for Miss Ellie, Clayton and JR even though the actors are now gone. It always feels weird to start writing about a character after you know that the actor who portrayed him or her has passed. But after a while that feeling passes and I take comfort in that their characters lives on in their fictional universe even though the actor is gone.

"There Will Be Blood"

This new episode of my fanfic is totally set in present time. One month after Bob´s release from prison, things seem to be more calm at Southfork...

...However it´s only a matter of perspective. The younger generation, especially Lucas, Chris and Margaret, disagree with Bob about letting go the whole question of his conviction and Charlie´s confession. Therefore they plot a strategy to bring down the now Senator who was partly responsible for Bob´s sentence. He acted in the trial as the prosecutor and Chris found evidence confirming that there was a link between the judge and the new senator. But the three of them must join forces to expose him and let the truth out.

Cliff and Afton return from Boston, where they visited Rebecca and her husband Kent. The couple had another baby despite her neurofibromatosis and are very happy with both children. Cally´s daughter Ellie, who now lives at the ranch, asks Afton to give her singing lessons. But she is afraid of having bad memories about her cancer scare. Chris meets his wife Jane, who had miscarried their baby two years ealier and has made her mind about their marriage.

The lives of Bobby and Betsy Ewing have changed a lot after receiving Jock´s inheritance. He is living a careless life and his former mate Will Monahan is nowhere to be seen. She is a business genius who hired her out-of-luck aunt Sue Ellen as her consultant, and has built a fashion company and also runs a night-club called "Yellow Rose", where members of the family gather and sometimes use for business meetings. Although their parents and their sister Lucy are living in California now, they consider the Ewings of Southfork as their family too and care about them.

Ray has overcome his health problems caused by a mug at the ranch, and Donna has a very close relationship with their daughter Margaret. However, both women share a well-hidden secret about Ray´s origins that was discovered by Betsy in the past. It has been kept secret...until now. Barbara Southworth and her husband Julian are sharing the Southfork main house with their Ewing kins. They will face problems again when his younger brother begins to stir up trouble within the family.

Always a Phoenix, Sue Ellen eventually was able to save her business corporation with the unexpected help of Gary and Betsy. Through a new investment in small air lines she has created a transport-based company that works with both his son´s company Wentworth Industries and its biggest competitor, the newly named Ewing Oil, that includes Gary´s Westfork Energies, and environment-friendly Krebbs Resources. Though she has started a new life with Dusty as her partner, Sue Ellen doesn´t forget that there is someone out there who caused her big failure two years before...and she is 99% sure of what his/her name is.

John Ross and his wife Andrea are a couple born to share their success. They each bought 50% of Pam´s former company Wentworth, and right before the wedding, they found about it, which made them its only owners. They travel around the world doing business, sometimes together and others alone, and their only frustration is that they have no children yet. As his father before him, John Ross wants someone to pass the company some day. Their relationship with the other Ewings has softened thanks to Andrea, though Pam still doesn´t trust her nephew completely.

The next episode will also introduce a mysterious new character "played" by Ray Liotta, as well as appearances of old faces familiar for fans of the classic "Dallas".

Karin, I´ll keep on posting next month of July, probably. Actually, right now I have so much material in my mind for each and every fanfic of mine that I´m a bit overwhelmed. I will post all of them because I enjoy writing them and because I think most of you will enjoy reading them, especially "Star".

In the specific case of "The Last Years of Southfork", everything was plotted before I created "Ewing Empire" and I mentioned a few details in the first episodes of the latter, so I don´t think I can / I should make any changes at all. I don´t wanna be too perfectionist otherwise I´ll never post anything again...It´s like coffee: a good cup of instant coffee can be better than a cup of old-fashioned coffee (sometimes).

So how about an update on the "The Last Years of Southfork" story?

I still need to read this from the beginning and it starts there...

To @Karin Schill and anyone else interested in my "Dallas" midquel (you know, the one that tells all about what happened between J.R.´s suicide in 1990 and Bobby and Pam´s return to Southfork, at the beginning of "Ewing Empire"), I have to tell you that I think it´s almost impossible to keep writing EE and my other 2 future fanfics ("Star" and "Return to Knots Landing"), and also add to this list the miniseries project that was "The Last Years of Southfork".

I have re-posted on my "Soaptime Fiction" site the complete synopsis of TLYOS so you can have plot details and references, and start or go on reading EE. I hope this may help you to get into my stories more easily, but for beginners, keep in mind that references to those "missing" 10 years are quite frequent in the first 10 episodes of EE, including some flashbacks like Miss Ellie´s request to Clayton in her deathbed, among other significant scenes.

As you all must know since you are writers too, and much more prolific and loyal to the classic "Dallas" than "moi", sometimes the ideas for the stories may be appealing to us but not practical, and the (bad) influence of other "real" TV soaps like TNT "Dallas", "Revenge" or "Empire", may change the way one writes and even become a "bad" inspiration. And that is something that I try to avoid, even if it takes me longer than usual to finish the episodes.

So that´s all folks! I´ll be posting here the upcoming episode "There Will Be Blood" within a few days, as well as a couple of video promos. My YouTube playlist with previews and openings can be found here.

Re-casting news:

Due to the non-active career of actor Chris Demetral, who "played" Christopher Ewing in "JR Returns" and in "Ewing Empire" too (so far), and since video promos are vital for me to keep my interest, I have re-cast the Christopher character with...

​

...American actor James Wolk, who has starred in the "Goliath" limited series this year. He has a "past" in the soap territory, though not too successful, leading the big failure that was "Lone Star", a brief soap where he played a Texan con man working in the oil business who lived two different lives and had two wives. Later he played Sigourney Weaver´s son in the miniseries "Political Animals".

He quite obviously has "the right stuff" to
play anyone on "Ewing Empire"!

He was also seen as scheming Bob Benson in "Mad Men", and episodically in other big hits like "Shameless" and "Billions". I hope you can imagine him as the adopted son of Bobby and Pam, and natural offspring of Kristin Shepard and Jeff Farraday. He will appear in the new promos too.



PS: Jesse who? Forget about him! I find James Wolk extremely cute, don´t you...?

Pam (smiling): Good morning, sweetheart.
Bob (sleepy): Morning...Are you awake already?
Pam: Well, it´s 9 p.m. We´ll be late for family breakfast again...The kids are going to think we are avoiding them...
Bob (kissing her again): Or worse...
Pam: Haha, no Bobby. I have a lot of things to do today, and I´m running out of time... (She is already dressed, and goes into the bathroom to make herself up) You know, I´m so excited to see Cliff and Afton again. They have been traveling so often lately they must know the whole globe...I´m going to pick them up at the airport and give them a surprise. I want to talk to them about a couple of things...Did I tell you that Ellie wants Afton to give her singing lessons? And Cliff says that Rebecca´s daughter is a pretty little thing, I´m sure that little J.R. will be happy with his new baby sister...Do you wanna come with me, Bobby? EPISODE 2/29: "THERE WILL BE BLOOD"

SCENE 1: EXT. BREAKFAST PATIO, SOUTHFORK MANOR

(Establishing shot of the back patio at the new big house of Southfork, and a general shot of all the people sitting at the table: Ray, Donna, Margaret, Christopher, and Lucas)

Donna (looking at her daughter): So, what´s in your schedule today, Margaret?
Margaret: Well, I´ll be giving a speech at SMU on the future of Wind Energy. Will you be there?
Donna: Oh I´m afraid I can´t, I´m sorry. Ray and I have a meeting with the chairman of the environmental committee, we´ll be tied up all day with him.

Ray: What about you too, boys? (Looking at both Chris and Lucas)
Chris: I can´t go to the office today, I´ve got a lot of work off. But I´ll be here for dinner.
Lucas: You know where I´ll be Ray. The thoroughbreds must be driven to the new stables, next to the SF riding school.
Ray: Ok. Now that Bob and Pam aren´t here yet, I wanna talk to you about something.
Margaret: What is it, dad?
Ray: I´ve noticed that, since the day Bob came back, you two have been trying to avoid him...You hardly talk to him...
Donna: Ray, I suppose we all have had to adapt to the situation...
Ray (looking serious at her): Please Donna, I wanna listen to what they think of it (she winks and smiles, ear to ear).
Lucas: Ray, it´s hard not to say something inadequate when we´re with him...Even Chris has played himself a fool a couple of times...
Chris (slightly embarrassed): Yes, I know what you mean Lucas. But it was only once, when the day he came back, I said something along the lines of "prison must be awful"... (Lucas rolls his eyes, Margaret and Donna smile at each other, and Ray nods).
Ray: But that´s understandable ´cause it was the first day and we all very nervous. But this still is happening and he was released one month ago...
Lucas: What do you mean, that I´m the guilty party here? (Sips his last drop of coffee and gets up) I think I´d better go back to work... (He starts to walk towards his van)
Ray (getting up while Donna tries to stop him. He looks at her and calms her with his look): Hey boy! Wait a minute! (Lucas stops walking but he doesn´t turn around. Ray stands in front of him and begins to talk to him in a lower voice) Don´t ever hint I´m still blaming you for what happened. But keep this in mind Lucas: if you haven´t still managed to treat your father...
Lucas (interrupting him): Natural father.
Ray: Don´t be rude to me kid! He is as much a father to you as I´ve always tried to be, he´s an excellent father and you should ask Chris about it. I just want you to try harder until you make him feel at home again. We Ewings care about each other, and we proved it to you when you and your sister were involved in the death of that detective. Gary, Bob and I covered you two and Bob did go to jail. Please, don´t think I´m blaming you for anything at all...I just want you to know how lucky you are for having this family. If you ain't thankful for that, maybe you should take the road again and leave Southfork. Think about it. (He turns around and returns to the table. Margaret and Chris look at each other with complicity and Donna finishes her breakfast.)
Donna: Everything´s alright now honey?
Ray: I hope so...
Margaret: Lucas has been suffering a lot lately, remember that dad...
Ray: He must realize he´s very lucky to live here and now. Bob and Pam and Donna and I know that twenty or twenty-five -years ago, the Ewing household might become a hell quite often. Now that J.R. isn't here to hurt us, or poor Miss Ellie and Jock and Clayton, we should thank God for that, instead of going the easiest way and caring about himself only...
(The camera pans up and we see one of the windows over the patio, and its drapes being closed. Then it cuts to a shot inside to see who was staring and overhearing the scene: it was Ellie, who is crying silently).

SCENE 2: INT. BOB & PAM´S BATHROOM, SOUTHFORK MANOR

(Close shot of Pam looking at the mirror while she checks out her hairdo. Then she opens the cabinet to take a brush and finds a little bottle with yellow pills in the corner. She takes it since she doesn´t recognize it, and sees that there is no label on it, and frowns, turning her head to their bedroom, where Bob still is sleeping. Afterwards she takes a couple of those pills and puts them in her pocket. She then takes her cell phone and texts someone for a date. They ok a specific time after lunch and she puts her cell back into her purse. Cut to the next scene.)

SCENE 3: EXT. BREAKFAST PATIO, SOUTHFORK MANOR

(Ellie walks out of the house and joins the family at the table.)

Ellie: Good morning everybody (smiling a forced smile). Sorry to be late. Did Pam leave already?
Donna: No honey. She and Bob must be on their way. Are you late for school Ellie?
Ellie: Well, she promised me she´d drive me to Braddock this morning. I hope she comes down on time (taking a toast and biting it).
Lucas (looking at Chris and Margaret): Well, I gotta leave myself. We´ll meet this evening folks (Chris and Margaret nod mysteriously, Ray just frowns).

Ray: Fine, boy. And remember what we talked about! (Lucas walks away and Margaret stands up too)
Margaret: Chris and I have to go now too. I´ll drive him in my eco-friendly car today (kissing her father´s cheek and then her mother´s).
Donna: Anything to keep our environment clean and ensure the future of our planet (smiling while she winks at Ellie. Margaret and Chris get into her car and they head to Dallas. Cut into next scene).

SCENE 4: EXT. SOUTHFORK LAND NEAR THE BIG DOOR ARCH

(Before leaving the Southfork road, Chris and Margaret stop when they see Lucas riding their way ).

Chris: So, everything went fine, right?
Lucas: If not for that grumpy stepfather of yours, Margaret...
Chris: Try not to be rude to us ok? We are family. And are on the same side in this too.
Margaret: I don´t like to lie to the family...
Chris: I neither...but do you think that your dad or mine would be ok with our plan?
Margaret: Not after all that time Bob wasted in prison...
Lucas: Let me tell you something. If Jock had been accused of something he didn´t do, and had been wasting time in prison, Bob, Ray, even J.R. would have moved heaven and earth to clear his name. And that´s what we must do. What we all the young Ewings must do on own. Remember that Bobby and Beth are on our side, and will be taking part in action in Austin too . And believe: there will be blood... (Lucas rides away, while Margaret and Chris look at each other concerned).

SCENE 5: EXT. YOUNG GENERATION´S MONTAGE, SEVERAL LOCATIONS

(Fade from black into the first scene of the act. The song "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas begins to play against a montage of the young generation. First, we see Lucas arriving at the new Southfork stables and parking the big horse trailer, and then opening the door and taking the first horse out, as he caresses him.)

"Carry on my wayward son
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond the illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man

(Then we see a big limo with a Ewing plate, and the camera gets inside through the window. Young Bobby Ewing is inside, dressed in a suit and tie, and the handsome driver looks at him in the mirror. Bobby notices it and smiles at him. The song begins to fade as we go back to the car driven by Margaret Ewing, with Chris as the co-pilot)

Margaret: So you are 100% sure of this, right?
Chris: I wish I were. But I think Lucas´s reasons are strong, and I also want my father´s name cleaned and back at the top.
Margaret: Do you think we´ll catch the senator?
Chris: Sure, with a little help of one of Beth´s employees. Don't worry, she won't go all the way, we just want to get evidence that he was in cahoots with the judge who sentenced Dad to jail. He doesn´t deserve to be in our Senate making big decisions when he is as corrupt as he can be...
Margaret: We better do it in the most legal way because our family´s name has been tarnished already. Are you sure we can count on Bobby and Beth too?
Chris: Of course. Gary also helped cover up for Charlie and Lucas. He´d agree to do what we are going to do, I'm sure of it...
Margaret: I hope this won´t get into deeper trouble, Chris. I really do. (The song continues as the car drives on towards Dallas)

I think keeping Dusty alive in your story is the best idea. It was sad hearing Jared passed away. Keeping his character and memory alive is a great compliment to the actor, and the character he portrayed.

SCENE 6: INT. SHEPARD INDUSTRIES PRIVATE PLANE, FLYING OVER TEXAS

Dusty (ironicly): That must be a really interesting book... (Sue Ellen winks and looks up to him)
Sue Ellen (smiling): Oh I´m sorry Dusty. I just wanted to take a look at the last report of my company...I thought it would take only 10 minutes...
Dusty (again, ironicly): Well, we will land in Dallas in 15 minutes...
Sue Ellen (putting away her folder): I´m really sorry, I just got lost into it...
Dusty: I hoped you would relax in our holidays but it´s been almost all business...
Sue Ellen: What about that dinner in Paris?
Dusty: Yes, that one. And we were there for 10 days. What is upsetting you?
Sue Ellen: Oh you know me, it´s so hard to disconnect when I´m surrounded by all kind of news reports, by email, online, sms´s...I promise that next next time it will be different...
Dusty: Is there anything you didn´t tell me?
Sue Ellen: Oh no, not at all. I can´t wait to get home and have a bubble bath. Will you join me...? (smiling)
Dusty: I can´t say no, can I?
Sue Ellen (smiling again, ear to ear): No... (she leans on and kisses his lips.)

(Back to the plane shot, this time going down and disappearing among the clouds, taking the direction of the Love Field airport of Dallas.)

Julian (rising one of his dark eyebrows): So you did it again, eh?
Barbara (aloof): Do what, darling?
Julian: You didn´t stop to say good morning to the family, as usual.
Barbara: Oh come on, this morning not even Bob bothered to come down...Only the kids were there...
Julian: No you are wrong. When we left, Pam, Ray and Donna were there. Besides, the kids are our family too. Your family, to me more precise...
Barbara: Julian, don´t be a nag, or I won´t drive you to the campus anymore and you will have to ask MY family to drive you instead. I don´t know why you don´t get a car, not that you can´t afford to buy one...
Julian: I want my situation to be more stable. The job at the college is great but a few hours every week doesn´t give me enough to buy a car...
Barbara: I could buy you one as an anniversary gift...
Julian: Why are we talking about my job? I wanted to know if you are going to do something about it...
Barbara: About what?
Julian: About you avoiding Bob since he was released from prison.
Barbara: I´m sure the last person he wants to see is the one who couldn´t stop that...His lawyer...I couldn´t win the case...
Julian: You don´t seem to know Bob too well, Barbara...but I won´t insist any more. It´s up to you. He´s one of the two direct relatives you have left. Think about that... (Barbara nods and looks away, while she pushes the accelerator)

Cliff: Sis, I´m so happy to see you! At some point of the trip I thought we´d stay there and never come back...
Afton: That´s not true, Pam. Not even Thai food could take Cliff away from you and his daughter and grandkids...

Pam (smiling a big smile): So how many countries did you visit, finally?
Cliff: Oh, a lot. Singapore, Thailand (looking at Afton doubtful...), Vietnam... (then he looks again at his wife)
Afton: ...Vietnam, Malaysia and then back to Singapore...
Pam: Oh my God. I wish I could convince Bobby to take a vacation like that...
Afton: How is he, Pam?
Cliff: Oh, yeah...How is my brother-in-law?
Pam (looking a bit sad): Well, ok I guess. He´s taking everything easy...
Afton: That´s good, isn´t it Pam?
Pam: I´m not really sure. But let´s go home now. You must be really tired... (Pam steps back and then bumps into Sue Ellen and Dusty) Oh I´m sorry (she recognizes them).
Sue Ellen (forcing a smile): Oh Pam! What a surprise! Are coming from somewhere or leaving?
Pam: No, they come from Southeast Asia... (Cliff and Afton get closer)
Sue Ellen: Oh congratulations, Cliff...Afton (the latter smiles a big smile). We must leave now. Please give my regards to Bob, I´ll call you this week to have lunch. Bye-bye (She leaves as waves goodbye, followed by Dusty)
Cliff (snarky): What happened to him? Did the cat bite his tongue...?
Afton: Come on Cliff, don´t be nasty. Dusty is a gentleman...
Cliff: What did I say? (looking at Pam)

Thanks @Toni for letting me know at the end of season five that you had already posted season six. I had forgotten about that.
But now I was able to read the updates and I have caught up with your story!

Finally after all these years. I just had to skip "The Last Years of Southfork" and start reading EE from the beginning.

Wow! I was surprised to learn that Bobby was the man who had spent 3 years in jail.
Yet I knew it couldn't be Ray since his last name is not Ewing and the man had a clock with an E on it when he was released. Yes I do pay attention to details!
However when I found out that Bobby went to jail to protect Charlie and Lucas it did make sense. He did love Charlie like a daughter. It was also clever use of Charlie's birth certificate. I didn't think of that when I read your story since I think of Christopher as being Bobby's son too. So when he said Lucas was his only son I assumed it was wrong since Bobby has two sons. One biological one and one adopted one. I never thought of that people would think Charlie was Bobby's daughter due to the trial. But you are right. I bet most people who didn't know them would think so.

So well the plot was clever.
Although I must confess that I wasn't too fond of the way the story was told in flashbacks. I don't particularly like that style when I watch TV but prefer when the narrative is more linear rather than jumping back and forth. So I did find it a bit confusing at first. So I am glad to hear that the next part of the story will not be told in that format.

I will miss Lucy, Val and Gary this season. So how much of the Knots Landing fanfic have you written?
Are they in it from the beginning?

Yeah the guy you cast as Christopher is cute. But lately I do think of Josh Henderson as John Ross and Jesse Metcalfe as Christopher. I think especially Josh was so excellent in his part that whenever I read/write John Ross these days I always picture Josh in my mind.

I hope you're not gonna make us wait another year before you update. I know I shouldn't be one to talk since I am horrible at updating my Dallas in the 90s story too. Speaking of my stories, have you finished reading my Dallas TNT story yet? (Forgiveness)

I´ll be reprising my fanfic real soon. Meanwhile, just confirm that, despite Ray Liotta´s death, I will keep him in my story as a new mystery character, though I changed the storyline so it wouldn´t be like one of Karin´s on "Forgiveness".

I´ll also devote the next two or three episodes to the Krebbses mainly, because they will leave on a "world tour" à la Miss Ellie & Clayton in TOS. I hope my very patient readers will enjoy my next installments! I will flag you to let you know!

Also you don't need to change your storylines on my behalf. Besides until you finish reading "Forgiveness" you don't even know if the storyline will play out the same way as you have in mind for your story. But either way I think it is okay to use the same 3rd generation characters.
